Minutes after shaking the Pope’s hand, nine-year-old David DePerro heard firecrackers—an odd sound. But they weren’t firecrackers—they were gunshots, and the white open car carrying John Paul II rushed past the shocked and confused boy. The Pope had been shot. May 13th is the is the 33rd anniversary of the shooting.
