Fray Stefano Cecchin, OFM

Fray Stefano Cecchin, OFM is the President of the Pontifical International Marian Academy (PAMI).

Fray Stefano is a Franciscan theologian, professor, and author, internationally recognized for his contributions to Marian studies. Appointed by Pope Francis in 2017 as President of PAMI, he has redefined the Academy’s mission to address the spiritual and social relevance of Mary in today’s world. Under his leadership, PAMI has launched groundbreaking initiatives such as the Department for Legality, which seeks to reclaim Marian devotion from misuse and promote Mary as a symbol of justice, peace, and maternal care.

With a doctorate in theology from the Pontifical Faculty “Marianum”, Fray Stefano’s academic journey is deeply rooted in the Franciscan tradition, which he views as inherently Marian. His scholarship explores themes such as the Immaculate Conception, Marian apparitions, and Mary’s role in Franciscan spirituality, always emphasizing her power to unite across cultures and faiths.

Fray Stefano’s recent leadership in the 26th International Mariological Marian Congress—a global gathering of scholars and practitioners—demonstrates his commitment to fostering dialogue that speaks to the most pressing human and spiritual challenges of our time. Drawing on papal teachings like Fratelli Tutti and Laudato Si’, he presents Mary not only as a theological figure, but as a universal model of encounter, healing, and hope.

Whether through his academic work, pastoral outreach, or international coordination, Fray Stefano inspires a vision of Mary that is deeply relevant to today’s fractured world.
