Description

The CIC and our co-sponsor The Center for the Constitution and the Catholic Intellectual Tradition (CIT) invite you to join us on Wednesday, November 19 at 1:00 PM EST for “Mercy, Retribution, and the Sentencing Judge.”

Mercy is, of course, a virtue. But jurists disagree over whether it is within their appropriate institutional role to exercise mercy when sentencing criminal defendants. Join the CIC and CIT for a conversation on this morally fraught question, and on the broader moral underpinnings of criminal punishment with our speakers:

  • Hon. Richard J. Sullivan — Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit
  • Hon. Stephanos Bibas — Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit
  • William M. M. Kamin (moderator) — Assistant Professor of Law and Managing Director for CIT, The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law

This program will be offered both in-person and virtually through a YouTube livestream.

11/19 Schedule:

  • 12:30 PM: Check-in and grab a cup of coffee
  • 1:00 PM: “Mercy, Retribution, and the Sentencing Judge” — offered both in-person and virtually through a livestream
  • 2:00 PM: Program concludes

Thank you to the Center for the Constitution and the Catholic Intellectual Tradition (CIT) for co-sponsoring this program.
