Al, as he was affectionately known to those he served, was a priest of the Archdiocese of Washington who became a missionary to serve the poor. His cause for canonization was opened in 2004 and in a major step towards sainthood, Pope Francis declared him Venerable in 2015. Al’s work has been extended to Brazil, Honduras, and Africa, in addition to the institutions he founded in Korea, the Philippines, and Mexico.
