SUMMARY:Monsignor Charles Pope's "The Hell There Is"
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join Msgr. Charles Pope on Tuesday\, June 24\, 2025 for a discussion of his new book\, The Hell There Is: An Exploration of an Often-Rejected Doctrine of the Church. Monsignor will celebrate Mass as well at 5:30 PM EDT. His presentation talk will begin at 6:15 PM\, followed by a booksigning and light happy hour. The Hell There Is is available for purchase at the CIC’s bookstore. \nThe talk be offered both in-person and virtually through a livestream. \nAbout The Hell There Is: \n“Of all the theological errors commonly held today\, the most popular is surely the denial of the doctrine of hell.”\n—Msgr. Charles Pope \nEven self-described Christians question whether God would consign anyone to hell. Msgr. Pope explains this false perception: “If it exists at all\, it is largely empty\, except perhaps for a few serial killers or genocidal maniacs like Hitler.” People who adopt this belief are ignoring Jesus’s teachings that instruct the exact opposite. \nIn The Hell There Is\, Msgr. Pope defends the doctrine of hell against doubters and skeptics. The reader will learn how God has largely been refashioned and trivialized in much of modern thinking. The God of Scripture has been replaced by the “Jesus I know\,” who would never impose demands on anyone. As in the past\, those nowadays who invent their own god engage in idolatry. By denying the existence of hell\, they choose a false god who is indifferent to their spiritual condition over the true God who makes demands on those He desires to save. \nMsgr. Pope argues persuasively why hell plays a central role in God’s plan of salvation\, based on a detailed examination of the scriptural evidence. A thorough explication of the teachings of Jesus on hell provides a convincing refutation of commonly heard claims that He never spoke about eternal punishment. Important questions about hell are answered completely based on sources from both Scripture and Tradition\, including theologically sound insights from Dante’s Inferno. Through this edifying book\, readers will come to better understand\, and renew belief in\, the doctrine of hell. \n6/24/2025 Program Schedule: \n\n5:15 pm EDT: Doors open for registrant check-in\n5:30 pm EDT: Daily Mass celebrated by Msgr. Pope\n6:15 pm EDT: Presentation by Msgr. Charles Pope on his new book (this portion will be offered both in-person and virtually via a livestream)\n7:15 pm EDT: Booksigning by Monsignor and a light happy hour\n8:00 pm EDT: Conclusion\n\nRSVP today!

SUMMARY:Natural Religion and the American Founding
DESCRIPTION:The CIC invites you to our upcoming program on June 25th\, “Natural Religion and the American Founding\,” presented by Edward J. Furton\, MA\, PhD\, Director of Publications at The National Catholic Bioethics Center (NCBC). \nThank you to both NCBC and the Elizabeth Bayley Seton Assembly #1781 of the Knights of Columbus for co-sponsoring this session. \nThe talk be offered both in-person and virtually through a livestream. All in-person attendees will receive a free book (courtesy of NCBC) in honor of the nation’s upcoming semiquincentennial\, Scholasticism in the Colonial Colleges by James J. Walsh. \nAbout this Session: \nAn Argumentative Strategy Grounded in Historical Fact that Justifies the Return of the Founding Truths to American Public Life \nDr. Furton delves into the educational background of the American Founders\, who were educated in the scholastic tradition of the Middle Ages\, as James J. Walsh shows in Scholasticism in the Colonial Colleges. Like Christians of the medieval era\, they were taught to distinguish between faith and reason\, a distinction crucial to our political union in 1776. \nThe colonies were at odds with each other over the doctrinal teachings of Christianity. The representatives at the Second Continental Congress set aside these differences and returned to what they had learned in the colleges. They joined the nation under theological and moral truths that are agreeable to reason. These convictions are the first principles of our political union\, are not subject to church-state separation\, and must be restored to our nation’s public life. \nSchedule: \n\n6:40 pm EDT: Doors open for registrant check-in\n7:00 pm EDT: “Natural Religion and the American Founding” presentation by Dr. Furton (this portion will be offered both in-person and virtually via a livestream)\n8:00 pm EDT: Light reception\n8:30 pm EDT: Conclusion\n\nRSVP today!
