Kubick\, PhD on his newly released book\, Transplanting the Womb: A Catholic Bioethical Analysis. \nEmergent technologies\, especially in the realm of medicine\, require new ethical examinations to determine their moral implications. Too often\, the march of technological progress well outpaces these examinations\, leaving doctors\, researchers\, and the general public without proper guidance regarding the morality of novel procedures. When this occurs\, it is the duty of bioethicists to evaluate these emergent technologies and procedures to determine what is morally permissible. \nTransplanting the Womb: A Catholic Bioethical Analysis\, by Andrew S. Kubick\, gives an extensive account of the ethical ramifications of uterus transplantation (UTx). Adapted from Kubick’s doctoral dissertation\, it examines the previous decade of advancements in this emerging field of medicine\, evaluating both the progress made and the ethical concerns surrounding the process. The analysis is necessary\, as no previous publications have provided an exploration of such depth. This book weighs both secular and Catholic ethical traditions\, providing a detailed account of the development of the process\, the literature published on the matter\, and the process’s place in the context of sound Christian anthropology. \nAcademically rigorous and faithful to the Catholic intellectual tradition\, Transplanting the Womb will leave readers with both a greater understanding of uterus transplantation and a deeper appreciation of Catholic moral philosophy. \nThe event will be offered both in-person and virtually through YouTube. DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome poet and scholar James Matthew Wilson for an evening of readings of his latest book of poems\, Saint Thomas and the Forbidden Birds. In between poems\, he will be interviewed by Robert Royal\, editor-in-chief of The Catholic Thing\, on his thoughts on Catholicism and the arts and how together they impact culture. This program will be offered both in-person and virtually through a livestream on Wednesday\, November 6. \nSaint Thomas and the Forbidden Birds is James Matthew Wilson’s fourth full-length collection of poems\, and he joins the great saint and theologian Thomas Aquinas to pause before “the thought of earthly sorrows” and to pray for “such a world that had so much to say.” \nThese poems stand in wonder before the tumult and beauty of created things and the capacity of the soul to rise above it. We move from encounters with the world as revelation\, mystery\, and promise\, to great scenes of sin and fracture such as the bombing of Dresden\, the execution of the Roman philosopher Cicero\, and scandals in the Church. Democrat\, Republican\, third party\, or independent—how do we make sense of it all? Dr. Craycraft’s book resets the framework of how we engage with politics as Catholics. He argues that American Catholics have been more influenced by classical liberal political theory (of both the “conservative” and “liberal” variety) than by historic Catholic moral theology. Making matters worse\, Catholics can be found on both sides of polarizing cultural and political issues\, each side thinking theirs is the only possible position for a Catholic to hold. We cannot even convince our fellow Catholics of the rationale for our contradictory policy positions. If we cannot communicate with other Catholics\, it should be no surprise when we find ourselves mute against the broader culture. The purpose of this book is to address this precarious situation as a symptom of the same basic problem: namely\, that we have abandoned (or forgotten) the moral language of Catholicism and replaced it with a moral dialect that leads inevitably to failure and frustration.
