SUMMARY:Fr. Jacques Philippe: Inner Freedom
DESCRIPTION:  \nWith over 400\,000 copies sold in 18 languages\, Jacques Philippe’s writings on themes such as prayer\, interior freedom\, and peace of heart have become classics of modern Catholic spirituality. \n  \nJacques Philippe was born in 1947 in Lorraine\, France. After studying mathematics in college\, he spent several years teaching and doing scientific research. In 1976\, he met the then recently-founded Community of the Beatitudes and answered the Lord’s call to follow Him through this vocation (see below for more information on the Community of the Beatitudes). He then spent several years in Jerusalem and Nazareth immersing himself in the study of Hebrew and the Jewish roots of Christianity. In 1981\, he traveled to Rome to study theology and canon law and also began his work as a spiritual director\, working in the formation of priests and seminarians of the Community. In 1994\, he returned to France\, where he assumed various responsibilities including spiritual direction\, the development of training in the Community\, and participation in its General Council. He has also preached retreats regularly in France and abroad and has consolidated his principal retreat themes into five books on spirituality. In recent years\, he has devoted himself primarily to spiritual direction\, preaching retreats\, and working for the development of the Community in Asia and Oceania\, where he travels frequently. \n  \nCommunauté des Béatitudes is an international association of the faithful of Pontifical Right founded in France in 1973. The Community of the Beatitudes gathers faithful from all states of life (married or unmarried lay people\, seminarians\, priests\, permanent deacons\, men and women consecrated in celibacy) who wish to conform as closely as possible to the model of the early Christian community through the common life\, the sharing of goods\, voluntary poverty and an intense sacramental and liturgical life. The members of the Community\, which has a contemplative vocation based on Carmelite spirituality\, are actively engaged in the service of the poor and the proclamation of the Gospel. \n

DESCRIPTION:Prof. Evelyn Birge Vitz will discuss some of the major Catholic novelists of the past hundred years—and there have been many: the 20th century was a remarkable period for Catholic literary creativity\, in both Europe and the United States. The primary writers she will focus on are: Sigrid Unset (Norway); Francois Mauriac (France); J.R.R. Tolkien\, Evelyn Waugh\, and Graham Greene (England); Willa Cather\, Walker Percy\, Jack Kerouac\, and Flannery O’Connor (USA). She also will look at the picture of Catholic literature in the United States today\, with focus on such major writers as Ron Hanson and Cormac McCarthy\, and will consider prospects for the future. \n  \n  \nEvelyn (Timmie) Birge Vitz was born and raised in Indianapolis. She received her BA from Smith College and her PhD from Yale University in French literature. She has taught since 1968 at New York University\, where she is now Professor of French\, and Affiliated Professor of Comparative Literature\, Medieval and Renaissance Studies\, and Religious Studies. She is married to Paul C. Vitz\, a Catholic psychologist and author who teaches at the Institute for the Psychological Sciences in Arlington VA. She and her husband are both converts to Catholicism. She is the author of A Continual Feast: A Cookbook to Celebrate the Joys of Family and Faith throughout the Christian Year\, as well as many studies of medieval culture and literature. At NYU\, she also teaches a seminar titled “Abortion: Examining the Issues\,” and with her daughter-in-law\, Ann Royals Vitz\, she has recently written a play on abortion which has been work-shopped in New York and Washington\, DC.  With Paul C. Vitz she recently co-authored an article titled “Women\, Abortion\, and the Brain” (http://www.thepublicdiscourse.com/2010/09/1657 ). She has spoken widely on Catholic issues\, such as at the University of Virginia and Assumption College\, and several times for Legatus. She is the founder of “Songbringers\,” a group of Catholic women in NYC whose mission is to sing for people in nursing homes and hospices. The Vitzes have 6 children and recently had their 16th grandchild; a son is a seminarian for the Institute of the Incarnate Word in MD. The Vitzes recently moved from New York City to Arlington VA; she now commutes to New York University.

DESCRIPTION:Young Professionals Program Happy Hour\n\nProfessor Charles Camosy will speak about his newly released book\, For Love of Animal. EPPC Fellow\, Mary Eberstadt\, will join him to offer commentary on the presentation. \n\nFor Love of Animals\, written by Professor Charles Camosy\, is an honest and thoughtful look at our responsibility as Christians with respect to animals. Many Christians misunderstand both history and their own tradition in thinking about animals. They are joined by prominent secular thinkers who blame Christianity for the Western world’s failure to seriously consider the moral status of animals. \nThis book explains how traditional Christian ideas and principles—like nonviolence\, concern for the vulnerable\, respect for life\, stewardship of God’s creation\, and rejection of consumerism—require us to treat animals morally. Though this point of view is often thought of as liberal\, the book cites several conservatives who are also concerned about animals. Camosy’s Christian argument transcends secular politics. \nThe book’s starting point for a Christian position on animals—from the creation story in Genesis to Jesus’ eating habits in the Gospels—rests in Scripture. It then moves to explore the views of the Church Fathers\, the teachings of the Catholic Church\, and current discussions in both Catholic and Protestant theology. Ultimately\, however\, the book is concerned not with abstract ideas\, but with how we should live our everyday lives. Should Christians eat meat? Is cooperation with factory farming evil? What sort of medical research on animals is justified? Camosy also asks difficult questions about hunting and pet ownership. \nThis is an ideal resource for those who are interested in thinking about animals from the perspective of Christian ethics and the consistent ethic of life. Discussion questions at the end of each chapter and suggestions for further reading round out the usefulness of this important work. \n  \nCharlie Camosy\nCharlie Camosy is Assistant Professor of Christian Ethics at Fordham University\, where he has been since finishing his PhD in theology at Notre Dame in 2008. He has published articles in the American Journal of Bioethics\, the Journal of Medicine and Philosophy\, the Journal of the Catholic Health Association\, the San Francisco Chronicle\, the Washington Post\, and Commonweal Magazine. He is the author of three books. Too Expensive to Treat?–Finitude\, Tragedy\, and the Neonatal ICU (Eerdmans) was a 2011 award-winner with the Catholic Media Association\, and Peter Singer and Christian Ethics: Beyond Polarization (Cambridge) was named a 2012 “best book” with ABC Religion and Ethics. His third book\, For Love of Animals: Christian Ethics\, Consistent Action (Franciscan)\, challenges Christians to live with justice and nonviolence toward non-humans. Camosy received the 2012-13 Robert Bryne award from the Fordham Respect Life Club\, and was also recently selected for the international working group “Contending Modernities” which attempts to bring secular liberalism\, Catholicism\, and Islam into dialogue about various difficult ethical issues. He is the founder and co-director of the Catholic Conversation Project and a member of the ethics committee at the Children’s Hospital of New York. \n  \nMary Eberstadt\nEPPC Senior Fellow Mary Eberstadt explores issues relating to American society\, culture\, religion\, and philosophy. She is the author of several influential books: Adam and Eve after the Pill: Paradoxes of the Sexual Revolution (2012); The Loser Letters: A Comic Tale of Life\, Death\, and Atheism (2010); and Home-Alone America: The Hidden Toll of Day Care\, Behavioral Drugs\, and Other Parent Substitutes (2005). He went on to receive a Millennium Scholarship Trust from the Bank of Ireland to do a Masters in Fine Art (2001) at the New York Academy of Art and also a Scholarship from the NYAA to use a studio in Provence in the South of France. Shortly after September 11 2001 he left Manhattan for Italy where he set up his studio first in Rome for a year and a half and then Florence for the next year and a half. He returned to Dublin in 2004 to establish the Irish Academy of Figurative Art over three and a half years which he has now entrusted to the remaining faculty and students. SUMMARY:Theology on Tap\, Featuring Dr. Juan Jose Daboub
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Daboub will share his experiences as a former Minister of Finance of El Salvador\, Former Managing Director of the World Bank\, and Business leader\, and the role that faith and fortitude have played in each step of his path. Dr. Juan José Daboub\, Ph.D. is the Founding Chief Executive Officer of the Global Adaptation Institute (www.gain.org) and the Chair of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Climate Change (www.weforum.org). He has taught at Princeton University and is a member of several Boards of Directors\, including in the USA\, The United Arab Emirates\, and Central America. He owns and co-owns companies in El Salvador and in the USA. As Managing Director of the World Bank\, from 2006 to 2010\, Dr. Daboub oversaw operations in 110 countries in Africa\, the Middle East\, East Asia and Latin America. He was also responsible for the oversight of the Human Development and Sustainable Development Networks\, the Information Systems Group\, the World Bank Institute\, and the Department of Institutional Integrity. Prior to the World Bank\, Dr. Daboub joined with El Salvador’s President Francisco Flores to develop the non-profit organization America Libre Institute. As leader of that organization\, Dr. Daboub implemented proven public policies to promote liberty\, stability and growth throughout Latin America. From 1999 to 2004\, Dr. Daboub served concurrently as El Salvador’s Minister of Finance and as Chief of Staff to President Flores. In these high profile dual roles\, Dr. Daboub helped to navigate his native country through several regional economic challenges including securing and sustaining El Salvador’s investment grade rating\, “dollarizing” the economy\, and completing a Free Trade Agreement with the United States. During this period\, he also oversaw the emergency reconstruction of El Salvador after two major earthquakes in 2001. Dr. Daboub’s leadership began in the private sector\, where he led his family-owned businesses for nearly a decade before joining the Board of CEL\, El Salvador’s electric utility\, and presiding over El Salvador’s electric distribution companies. Subsequently\, he was named President of ANTEL\, the state-owned telecommunications company\, which he re-structured and privatized through a competitive and transparent process that also de-monopolized that strategic sector. He held high Government positions in El Salvador for 12 years (1992-2004)\, working for three different Administrations without belonging to any political party. Dr. Daboub holds a Bachelors of Science\, Masters of Science and a PhD in Industrial Engineering from North Carolina State University. SUMMARY:The Syrian Conflict: Christians Caught in the Crossfire and the Future of a Nation
DESCRIPTION:A fascinating discussion with Middle East experts Dr. Samir Altaqi\, Director General\, Orient Research Center Center\, Dubai\, UAE and Mark Danner. \nDr. Altaqi is a respected figure in the civil opposition movement to the government of Syria. He is a former member of the Syrian Parliament and Director of the Orient Center for International Studies\, Damascus. A moderate Sunni Muslim with a commitment to inter-faith dialog\, Dr. Altaqi has taught at Western universities and is a leading expert on Syrian politics and culture who is frequently interviewed and cited by international media. While serving as an advisor to the President Assad\, he presented the findings of an in-depth study that he wrote in which he identified key warning indicators that Syria was facing a popular uprising. This was one year before protests began. Assad criticized and dismissed Dr. Altaqi’s assessment\, leading Dr. Altaqi to go into exile in Dubai out of fear for his safety. Dr. Altaqi is a heart surgeon by training. \nMr. Danner is an authority on Middle East affairs with a focus on Lebanese – Syrian affairs. He is active in inter-faith dialog as inspired by the lives of Blessed Charles de Foucauld and Dom Christian de Chergue of Algeria\, and the life and works of Louis Massignon. Mr. Danner has lived\, worked and studied in the Middle East\, and received his M.A. in Arab Studies from Georgetown University.
