SUMMARY:Business Secrets of the Trappist Monks
DESCRIPTION:One CEO’s Quest for Meaning and Authenticity\nA CIC Young Professionals Happy Hour Event with author\, August Turak*\n “This book is both quietly provocative and groundbreaking. With great simplicity\, August Turak unlocks these monastic ‘secrets’ that go to the core of succeeding in an economic era in which authenticity and passion have become key. Who knew the monks had so many things right?”   —Tom Freston\, former CEO of Viacom and MTV Networks \n\nAugust Turak is a successful entrepreneur\, corporate executive\, and award-winning author who attributes much of his success to living and working alongside the Trappist monks of Mepkin Abbey for seventeen years. As a frequent monastic guest\, he learned firsthand from the monks as they grew an incredibly successful portfolio of businesses. \nService and selflessness are at the heart of the 1\,500-year-old monastic tradition’s remarkable business success. It is an ancient though immensely relevant economic model that preserves what is positive and productive about capitalism while transcending its ethical limitations and internal contradictions. Combining vivid case studies from his thirty-year business career with intimate portraits of the monks at work\, Turak shows how Trappist principles can be successfully applied to a variety of secular business settings and to our personal lives as well. He demonstrates that monks and people like Warren Buffett are wildly successful not despite their high principles but because of them. Turak also introduces other “transformational organizations” that share the crucial monastic business strategies so critical for success. \nAfter a corporate career with companies like MTV\, August Turak founded two highly successful software businesses\, Raleigh Group International (RGI) and Elsinore Technologies. He received a B.A. in history from the University of Pittsburgh and is pursuing a Masters in theology at St. John’s University\, Minnesota. Turak’s essay “Brother John” received the grand prize in the John Templeton Foundation’s Power of Purpose essay contest. He has been featured in the Wall Street Journal\, Fast Company\, Selling Magazine\, the New York Times\, and Business Week\, and is a popular leadership contributor at Forbes.com. His website is www.augustturak.com. \n\nReviews: \n\n“Business Secrets of the Trappist Monks is an eye-opening read. August Turak delivers a timely\, insightful message about the power of purpose and the surprising ways that service can fuel success. The engaging narrative—which is grounded in Turak’s rich\, diverse experiences as an entrepreneur\, corporate executive\, and monastic guest—paints a picture of a path to profits that is both pioneering and provocative.” —Adam Grant\, author of Give and Take: A Revolutionary Approach to Success \n“I truly believe this book will improve not only your business but your life. Read it. Apply what you learn and then\, in keeping with the very spirit of the book\, pass it on to someone else.” —Michael Keaton\, actor \n  \n*$15 Admission includes food and drinks. As a CIC Young Professional Program Happy Hour\, this event is open to those between the ages of 21-35. Those who are not in that age range\, are welcome to attend\, but are asked to RSVP in advance to events@cicdc.org

SUMMARY:"An Anxious Age"\, Joseph Bottum
DESCRIPTION:An Anxious Age\nWe live in a profoundly spiritual age—but in a very strange way\, different from every other moment of our history. Huge swaths of American culture are driven by manic spiritual anxiety and relentless supernatural worry. Radicals and traditionalists\, liberals and conservatives\, together with politicians\, artists\, environmentalists\, followers of food fads\, and the chattering classes of television commentators: America is filled with people frantically seeking confirmation of their own essential goodness. We are a nation desperate to stand on the side of morality–to know that we are righteous and dwell in the light. \nOr so Joseph Bottum argues in An Anxious Age\, an account of modern America as a morality tale\, formed by its spiritual disturbances. And the cause\, he claims\, is the most significant and least noticed historical fact of the last fifty years: the collapse of the Mainline Protestant churches that were the source of social consensus and cultural unity. Our dangerous spiritual anxieties\, broken loose from the churches that once contained them\, now madden everything in American life. \nUpdating The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism\, Max Weber’s sociological classic\, An Anxious Age undertakes two case studies in contemporary social class\, adrift in a nation without the religious understandings that gave it meaning. Looking at the college-educated elite he calls “The Poster Children\,” Bottum sees the post-Protestant heirs of the old Mainline Protestant domination of culture: dutiful descendants who claim the high social position of their Christian ancestors even while they reject their ancestors’ Christianity. Turning to “The Swallows of Capistrano\,” the Catholics formed by the pontificate of John Paul II\, Bottum evaluates the early victories–and later defeats–of the attempt to substitute Catholicism for the dying Mainline voice in public life. \nSweeping across American intellectual and cultural history\, An Anxious Age traces the course of national religion and warns about the strange angels and even stranger demons with which we now wrestle. Insightful and contrarian\, wise and unexpected\, An Anxious Age ranks among the great modern accounts of American culture. \nJoseph Bottum\nJoseph Bottum is one of the nation’s most widely published and influential essayists—and author of The Christmas Plains\, classic reflections on the meaning of Christmas and the American prairie. A bestselling writer of Kindle ebooks\, with work in journals from the Atlantic to the Wall Street Journal and Washington Post\, Bottum is the former literary editor of theWeekly Standard and editor-in-chief of First Things. He holds a Ph.D. in medieval philosophy and has done television commentary for programs from NBC’s Meet the Press to the PBS NewsHour. The author of two volumes of poetry\, and writer of short stories and song lyrics\, Bottum lives with his family far off in the Black Hills of South Dakota. During the spring of 2014\, he will be Distinguished Visiting Professor at Houston Baptist University.

SUMMARY:Renewal
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Kathryn Lopez interviews Anne Hendershott and Christopher White about their recently published work\, Renewal: How a New Generation of Faithful Priests and Bishops Is Revitalizing the Catholic Church.  \nIn the wake of the clergy abuse scandal of the last decade\, many media commentators predicted the “end” of the Catholic priesthood. Demands for an end to celibacy\, coupled with calls for women’s ordination\, dominated discussions on the effectiveness of the Catholic Church in America. Renewal argues that rather than a decline of the priesthood and a diminishing influence of the Catholic Church\, we are living in a time of transformation and revitalization. The aging generation of progressives that continues to lobby Church leaders to change Catholic teachings on reproductive rights\, same-sex marriage and women’s ordination is being replaced by younger men and women who are attracted to the Church because of the very timelessness of its teachings. \n  \nAnne Hendershott is Professor of Sociology and Director of the Veritas Center for Ethics in Public Life at Franciscan University in Steubenville\, Ohio. Previously\, she was a Distinguished Visiting Professor at The King’s College in New York City. She moved to The King’s College in 2008 after spending more than 15 years as a tenured full-professor of sociology at the University of San Diego. She received her PhD in Sociology at Kent State University in 1988\, and was the James Madison Fellow at Princeton University in 2005. A frequent contributor to popular press outlets including Catholic World Report\, the Wall Street Journal\, Crisis\, and others\, she publishes frequently on issues of importance within the Catholic Church. She is the author of five previous books including Status Envy: The Politics of Catholic Higher Education (Transaction\, 2009)\, The Politics of Deviance (Encounter Books\, 2002)\, The Politics of Abortion (Encounter Books\, 2006)\, The Reluctant Caregivers (Bergin and Garvey\, 2000)\, and Moving for Work (University Press of America\, 1994). \nChristopher White is the Director of Education and Programs at the Center for Bioethics and Culture. He writes frequently on matters of public policy and social ethics\, and is a regular contributor to many print and online publications\, including the Wall Street Journal\, USA Today\, National Review Online\, Catholic World Report\, Human Life Review\, First Things\, Public Discourse\, and the National Catholic Register. He was awarded a 2013-2014 Robert Novak Fellowship. SUMMARY:God's Bucket List with Teresa Tomeo
DESCRIPTION:  \nGod’s Bucket List\nScripture tells us only God knows the desires of our hearts. It was\, after all\, God who placed them there because they are designed to lead us to His will for our lives. Why\, then\, is it so challenging at times to figure out if we are on the right track when it comes to what we believe we want or need? In God’s Bucket List\, Teresa Tomeo examines what God wants for each of us: mercy\,  fruitfulness\, fellowship\, and peace\, just to name a few\, and will explain what the Christian faith teaches about these gifts and how we can begin to achieve and cross out\, one by one\, the items on that heavenly list. \n  \n  \n\nAuthor\, Teresa Tomeo\nTeresa Tomeo is a motivational speaker\, best-selling Catholic author\, and host of the daily morning radio program\, “Catholic Connection”\, produced by Ave Maria Radio and syndicated on over 230 stations through the EWTN Catholic Radio Network. Teresa is a columnist for the national Catholic newspaper Our Sunday Visitor. She appears frequently on EWTN Catholic TV and co-hosts the EWTN program The Catholic View for Women. Teresa has also served as a presenter and delegate at various Vatican conferences including at the Pontifical Council for the Family and the Pontifical Council for the Laity addressing media issues and the Church’s teachings on women. Prior to her work in Catholic media Teresa was a radio and TV newswoman for nearly twenty years. Teresa has been featured on The O’Reilly Factor\, Fox News\, Fox & Friends\, MSNBC\, and the Dr. Laura Show\, discussing issues of faith\, media awareness\, and Catholic Church teaching\, especially as it relates to the culture. \n

SUMMARY:Waiting for Eli with Chad Judice
DESCRIPTION:What would you do if you knew your unborn child would be born with a serious birth defect? That’s the question that was fasing Chad and Ashley Judice when their unborn son was diagnosed with spina bifida in a 16-weeks ultrasound. If brought to term\, the child could be paralyzed from the waist down. He would probably have little or no control of his bowels or bladder. And he could have any number of learning disabilities associated with a related birth defect. When the doctor gave the judices the diagnosis\, she expressed her sincere sympathy\, then proceeded to ask Ashley if she wanted to terminate the pregnancy. The medical literature on this birth defect indicates 80 percent of parents who are given this diagnosis do chose abortion. Ashley and Chad did not want to be in that number. Instead\, they would pray for a miracle. \nEli’s Reach is the sequel to the inspiring\, heartwarming book\, Waiting for Eli: A Father’s Journey from Fear to Faith. The first book told the story of a couple\, Chad and Ashley Judice\, and their second son\, who came into the world with a dreaded birth defect. The sequel describes how Eli’s story has rekindled the dormant faith of some and drawn them into a life with more room for God and family. This book also shows how Eli’s story has brought many to a keener appreciation of the value of all human life\, including the lives of the most vulnerable among us. Eli’s Reach takes the reader on an emotional roller coaster ride\, from the frightening times when Eli is gravely ill to a most exultant moment when he is delivered from a life-threatening medical situation–through what the author and others believe was a bona fide miracle. \nChad Judice\, Eli’s father and author of Waiting for Eli: A Father’s Journey from Fear to Faith and Eli’s Reach will be speaking at the CIC about his powerful journey of faith.

SUMMARY:"Disinformation: Former Spy Chief Reveals Secret Strategies for Undermining Freedom\, Attacking Religion and Promoting Terrorism"
DESCRIPTION:Professor Rychlak will speak on his new book\, Disinformation: Former Spy Chief Reveals Secret Strategies for Undermining Freedom\, Attacking Religion\, and Promoting Terrorism. In this book\, Rychlak and his co-author Ion Mihai Pacepa\, the highest ranking Soviet officer ever to defect to the West\, explain how the Soviet intelligence machine was used to advance communism by tearing down Western values and attacking religious leaders\, including Pope Pius XII and Cardinals Mindszenty\, Stepinac\, and  Wyszynski. Unfortunately\, that deception continues to reverberate today. At this talk\, Rychlak will both explore the great work done by the Church during WWII and reveal the Soviet hand in distorting the historical truth. \n  \n\nProfessor Ronald J. Rychlak is the Butler Snow Professor of Law at the University of Mississippi\, where he has been on the law school faculty since 1987. He has performed diplomatic work for both the United States and the Holy See and he has served as an advisor to the Vatican’s delegation at the United Nations since 2000. \nRon is on advisory boards for the Catholic League\, Ave Maria School of Law\, the Bellarmine Forum\, Angelico Press\, and the Society of Catholic Social Scientists (SCSS). In 2013\, the SCSS presented Ron with the Pope Pius XI Award for Social Scholarship; in 2008 the Archdiocese of Zagreb presented him with a Blessed Cardinal Stepinac medal; and in 2012 the Ole Miss Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame recognized his lifetime contribution to amateur football. \nRon is the author or co-author of eight books\, including Hitler\, the War\, and the Pope\, which the Congregation for the Causes of Saints called “definitive” in its final report on Pope Pius XII. The Catholic League called that book “the definitive popular history of the papacy of Pope Pius XII in the shadow of Nazism.” Ron’s most recent book\, Disinformation\, is co-authored by the highest ranking Soviet bloc intelligence officer ever to defect to the West. Former CIA director James Woolsey said: “this remarkable book will change the way you look at intelligence\, foreign affairs\, the press\, and much else besides.” \nRon and his wife Claire have been married for 28 years\, have six children\, and live in Oxford\, Mississippi. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Fr. Jacques Philippe: Inner Freedom
DESCRIPTION:  \nWith over 400\,000 copies sold in 18 languages\, Jacques Philippe’s writings on themes such as prayer\, interior freedom\, and peace of heart have become classics of modern Catholic spirituality. \n  \nJacques Philippe was born in 1947 in Lorraine\, France. After studying mathematics in college\, he spent several years teaching and doing scientific research. In 1976\, he met the then recently-founded Community of the Beatitudes and answered the Lord’s call to follow Him through this vocation (see below for more information on the Community of the Beatitudes). He then spent several years in Jerusalem and Nazareth immersing himself in the study of Hebrew and the Jewish roots of Christianity. In 1981\, he traveled to Rome to study theology and canon law and also began his work as a spiritual director\, working in the formation of priests and seminarians of the Community. In 1994\, he returned to France\, where he assumed various responsibilities including spiritual direction\, the development of training in the Community\, and participation in its General Council. He has also preached retreats regularly in France and abroad and has consolidated his principal retreat themes into five books on spirituality. In recent years\, he has devoted himself primarily to spiritual direction\, preaching retreats\, and working for the development of the Community in Asia and Oceania\, where he travels frequently. \n  \nCommunauté des Béatitudes is an international association of the faithful of Pontifical Right founded in France in 1973. The Community of the Beatitudes gathers faithful from all states of life (married or unmarried lay people\, seminarians\, priests\, permanent deacons\, men and women consecrated in celibacy) who wish to conform as closely as possible to the model of the early Christian community through the common life\, the sharing of goods\, voluntary poverty and an intense sacramental and liturgical life. The members of the Community\, which has a contemplative vocation based on Carmelite spirituality\, are actively engaged in the service of the poor and the proclamation of the Gospel. \n

SUMMARY:Michael Novak: Writing from Left to Right
DESCRIPTION:Writing as if to old friends and foes\, Michael Novak shows how Providence (not deliberate choice) placed him in the middle of many crucial events of his time: a month in wartime Vietnam\, the student riots of the 1960s\, the Reagan revolution\, the collapse of the Berlin Wall\, Bill Clinton’s welfare reform\, and the struggles for human rights in Iraq and Afghanistan. He also spent fascinating days\, sometimes longer\, with inspiring leaders like Sargent Shriver\, Bobby Kennedy\, George McGovern\, Jack Kemp\, Václav Havel\, President Reagan\, Lady Thatcher\, and Pope John Paul II\, who helped shape—and reshape—his political views. \nYet through it all\, as Novak’s sharply etched memoir shows\, his focus on helping the poor and defending universal human rights remained constant; he gradually came to see building small businesses and envy-free democracies as the only realistic way to build free societies. Without economic growth from the bottom up\, democracies are not stable. Without protections for liberties of conscience and economic creativity\, democracies will fail. Free societies need three liberties in one: economic liberty\, political liberty\, and liberty of spirit. \nNovak’s writing throughout is warm\, fast paced\, and often very beautiful. His narrative power is memorable.

SUMMARY:Faith: The Key to Unlocking Scripture with Fr. Ignacio Carbajosa
DESCRIPTION:A book presentation of Faith\, the Fount of Exegesis with author Fr. Ignacio Carbajosa of San Damaso University (Madrid)\, about the great questions surrounding Biblical interpretation since the Enlightenment.\n\n\nCan there be objective biblical research without faith? By studying the history of the interpretation of the Old Testament in the last two centuries\, Fr. Carabajosa uncovers the philosophical premises of the dominant interpretations and their deceptive claims to objectivity. Biblical research tainted by an inadequate use of reason actually makes a true understanding of Holy Scripture difficult. On the contrary\, by broadening reason\, faith allows for a more adequate approach to the biblical text\, which itself is the fruit of faith. \nLearn more about the book here. \n  \n Ignacio Carbajosa\, Ph.D. in Biblical Studies from the Pontifical Biblical Institute\, is a Professor of Old Testament and Semitic Languages at the San Dámaso University in Madrid. He is the editor in chief of the journal Estudios Bíblicos\, a member of the Society of Biblical Literature\, and author of numerous books on Scripture including The Character of the Syriac Version of Psalms and A Scribe in the King’s Court: Read the Old Testament from Christ. \nTobias Hoffmann\, Moderator \nTobias Hoffmann is Associate Professor of Medieval Philosophy at the Catholic University of America. SUMMARY:For Love of Animals: Christian Ethics\, Consistent Action
DESCRIPTION:Young Professionals Program Happy Hour\n\nProfessor Charles Camosy will speak about his newly released book\, For Love of Animal. EPPC Fellow\, Mary Eberstadt\, will join him to offer commentary on the presentation. \n\nFor Love of Animals\, written by Professor Charles Camosy\, is an honest and thoughtful look at our responsibility as Christians with respect to animals. Many Christians misunderstand both history and their own tradition in thinking about animals. They are joined by prominent secular thinkers who blame Christianity for the Western world’s failure to seriously consider the moral status of animals. \nThis book explains how traditional Christian ideas and principles—like nonviolence\, concern for the vulnerable\, respect for life\, stewardship of God’s creation\, and rejection of consumerism—require us to treat animals morally. Though this point of view is often thought of as liberal\, the book cites several conservatives who are also concerned about animals. Camosy’s Christian argument transcends secular politics. \nThe book’s starting point for a Christian position on animals—from the creation story in Genesis to Jesus’ eating habits in the Gospels—rests in Scripture. It then moves to explore the views of the Church Fathers\, the teachings of the Catholic Church\, and current discussions in both Catholic and Protestant theology. Ultimately\, however\, the book is concerned not with abstract ideas\, but with how we should live our everyday lives. Should Christians eat meat? Is cooperation with factory farming evil? What sort of medical research on animals is justified? Camosy also asks difficult questions about hunting and pet ownership. \nThis is an ideal resource for those who are interested in thinking about animals from the perspective of Christian ethics and the consistent ethic of life. Discussion questions at the end of each chapter and suggestions for further reading round out the usefulness of this important work. \n  \nCharlie Camosy\nCharlie Camosy is Assistant Professor of Christian Ethics at Fordham University\, where he has been since finishing his PhD in theology at Notre Dame in 2008. He has published articles in the American Journal of Bioethics\, the Journal of Medicine and Philosophy\, the Journal of the Catholic Health Association\, the San Francisco Chronicle\, the Washington Post\, and Commonweal Magazine. He is the author of three books. Too Expensive to Treat?–Finitude\, Tragedy\, and the Neonatal ICU (Eerdmans) was a 2011 award-winner with the Catholic Media Association\, and Peter Singer and Christian Ethics: Beyond Polarization (Cambridge) was named a 2012 “best book” with ABC Religion and Ethics. His third book\, For Love of Animals: Christian Ethics\, Consistent Action (Franciscan)\, challenges Christians to live with justice and nonviolence toward non-humans. Camosy received the 2012-13 Robert Bryne award from the Fordham Respect Life Club\, and was also recently selected for the international working group “Contending Modernities” which attempts to bring secular liberalism\, Catholicism\, and Islam into dialogue about various difficult ethical issues. He is the founder and co-director of the Catholic Conversation Project and a member of the ethics committee at the Children’s Hospital of New York. \n  \nMary Eberstadt\nEPPC Senior Fellow Mary Eberstadt explores issues relating to American society\, culture\, religion\, and philosophy. She is the author of several influential books: Adam and Eve after the Pill: Paradoxes of the Sexual Revolution (2012); The Loser Letters: A Comic Tale of Life\, Death\, and Atheism (2010); and Home-Alone America: The Hidden Toll of Day Care\, Behavioral Drugs\, and Other Parent Substitutes (2005). She is also editor of a 2007 anthology\, Why I Turned Right: Leading Baby Boom Conservatives Chronicle their Political Journeys. Her latest book is How the West Really Lost God: A New Theory of Secularization\, published by Templeton Press (April 2013). \nMrs. Eberstadt has written for many magazines and newspapers\, including National Review\, Policy Review\, The Weekly Standard\, Commentary\, the Wall Street Journal\, Los Angeles Times\, The Washington Post\, The Times\, First Things\, The Claremont Review of Books\, and the American Spectator. \n\nEntrance fee of $15 includes food and beverage for the evening. \nThis lecture and happy hour is part of the CIC’s Young Professionals Program\, which welcomes those between the ages of 21-35 into a dialogue about faith and culture.

SUMMARY:Msgr. Peter Vaghi: Encountering Jesus in Words\, Sacraments\, and Works of Charity
DESCRIPTION:In one of the first homilies after his election\, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI said: “There is nothing more beautiful than to be surprised by the Gospel\, by the encounter with Christ.” In his newest book\, Encountering Jesus in Word\, Sacraments\, and Works of Charity\, popular DC-based pastor and teacher Msgr. Peter J. Vaghi connects this vision to everyday life\, drawing on gospel passages that portray Christ’s power and his important teaching in parables. He also offers challenging reflections that show readers how they can draw near to Christ: by studying scripture\, celebrating the sacraments\, and exercising the ministry of charity. \n  \nThis essential resource is perfect for those fostering the New Evangelization\, the newly baptized\, during the mystagogy phase of RCIA\, catechist formation\, and adult education. Msgr. Peter Vaghi presents a fresh and challenging look at how to encounter and grow close to Jesus through scripture\, the sacraments\, and acts of charity. Prayers and reflection questions at the end of each chapter make this an ideal guide for small groups and\nother settings of adult faith formation. \n  \nLunch to be served. \n

SUMMARY:John Allen- The Global War on Christians
DESCRIPTION:One of the most respected journalists in the United States and the bestselling author of The Future Church uses his unparalleled knowledge of world affairs and religious insight to investigate the troubling worldwide persecution of Christians. \nFrom Iraq and Egypt to Sudan and Nigeria\, from Indonesia to the Indian subcontinent\, Christians in the early 21st century are the world’s most persecuted religious group. According to the secular International Society for Human Rights\, 80 percent of violations of religious freedom in the world today are directed against Christians. In effect\, our era is witnessing the rise of a new generation of martyrs. Underlying the global war on Christians is the demographic reality that more than two-thirds of the world’s 2.3 billion Christians now live outside the West\, often as a beleaguered minority up against a hostile majority– whether it’s Islamic fundamentalism in the Middle East and parts of Africa and Asia\, Hindu radicalism in India\, or state-imposed atheism in China and North Korea. In Europe and North America\, Christians face political and legal challenges to religious freedom. Allen exposes the deadly threats and offers investigative insight into what is and can be done to stop these atrocities. \n“This book is about the most dramatic religion story of the early 21st century\, yet one that most people in the West have little idea is even\nhappening: The global war on Christians\,” writes John Allen. “We’re not talking about a metaphorical ‘war on religion’ in Europe and the United States\, fought on symbolic terrain such as whether it’s okay to erect a nativity set on the courthouse steps\, but a rising tide of legal oppression\, social harassment and direct physical violence\, with Christians as its leading victims. However counter-intuitive it may seem in light of popular stereotypes of Christianity as a powerful and sometimes oppressive social force\, Christians today indisputably form the most persecuted religious body on the planet\, and too often its new martyrs suffer in silence.” \nThis book looks to shatter that silence.
