SUMMARY:Christians in the Middle East: The Current Crisis & What Can Be Done
DESCRIPTION:Today\, the very existence of Christians in some parts of the Middle East is threatened. Join us for a discussion on the the persecution of Christians in the Middle East and learn what actions the west can take to defend this religious minority. Georgetown University Professor Tom Farr will examine U.S. policy with respect to religious freedom in general and Christian minorities in the Middle East in particular. Andrew Doran\, Executive Director of In Defense of Christians\, and filmmaker Jordan Allott will discuss their experiences on the ground in Syria and Iraq earlier this year. Allott will show video shorts\, including footage from Iraq\, Syria\, and Lebanon\,  that explain what In Defense of Christians will do to for the preservation of Christianity in the Middle East. \n\n\nThomas F. Farr\nDirector\, Religious Freedom Project at the Berkley Center for Religion\, Peace\, and World Affairs (Georgetown University)\nThomas F. Farr is director of the Religious Freedom Project at the Berkley Center for Religion\, Peace\, and World Affairs and a visiting associate professor of religion and international affairs at Georgetown’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. A former American diplomat and leading authority on international religious freedom\, Farr has published widely\, including “Diplomacy in an Age of Faith” in Foreign Affairs(March/April 2008)\, and World of Faith and Freedom: Why International Religious Liberty is Vital to American National Security (Oxford University Press\, 2008). Farr received his B.A. in history from Mercer University\, and his Ph.D. in modern British and European history from the University of North Carolina. \n\n\n\nAndrew Doran\nExecutive Director\, In Defense of Christians\nMr. Doran served on the executive secretariat of the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO at the U.S. Department of State. He has worked as a business and management consultant for the U.S. Department of State. He writes variously about U.S. foreign policy\, with a particular focus on the persecution of Christians in the Middle East\, where he has traveled widely. He has met with Senators\, Hill staffers\, non-governmental organizations\, human rights activists from across the North America\, Europe\, and the Middle East to advocate for the rights of religious minorities\, especially the ancient Christian communities of Egypt\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, and Syria. He is an attorney and armed forces veteran\, and lives in metropolitan Washington\, D.C. \n\n\nJordan Allott\nSenior Advisor\, In Defense of Christians\nJordan Allott is senior advisor to In Defense of Christians (IDC) and the founder of In Altum Productions.  Jordan is a documentary filmmaker and writer whose work focuses on human rights issues. In 2009-10\, Jordan went into Cuba to film a documentary about Dr. Oscar Biscet\, a Castro dissident and human rights advocate who was imprisoned by the Communist regime\, for which he has been banned by the Cuban government. In 2013\, Jordan went to Egypt to interview Coptic Christians and other Egyptians who opposed the oppressive rule of the Muslim Brotherhood\, producing this documentary short upon his return. Earlier this year\, despite significant ISIS activity in the region\, Jordan crossed into Syrian under the cover of night to document the heroic struggle of Christians to survive. The story was captured in the print edition of National Review’sMay 19 edition. That same month\, Jordan traveled to Nigeria\, publishing an account in NRO entitled\, “On Boko Haram’s Blood Trail.” \nIn Defense of Christians (IDC)\nIn Defense of Christians (IDC) is a non-profit\, non-partisan organization whose mission is to heighten awareness among policymakers and the general public of the existence of ancient and often persecuted minority communities in the Middle East\, particularly Christians. IDC will also conduct policy advocacy for vulnerable Christians and other religious minorities. Through greater awareness and advocacy\, IDC hopes to influence the U.S. and foreign governments to adopt policies that will safeguard and empower minority religious communities in the Middle East\, especially those vulnerable to violence\, marginalization\, and persecution.

During her twenties\, in the 1990s\, she was a rock journalist in New York City\, interviewing performers such as Elton John and Brian Wilson. She went on to work on the editorial staff of the New York Post and the Daily News.\n\n\nWhen Dawn was thirty-one\, she experienced a dramatic conversion to Christianity that ultimately led her to enter the Catholic Church. Her first book\, The Thrill of the Chaste\, became a surprise hit\, published in four languages.\n \n\nIn My Peace I Give You\, Dawn offers a Catholic spirituality of healing for adult victims of childhood sexual abuse. Lewis (OUP\, 2008)\, and co-editor of The Cambridge Companion to C.S. Lewis (CUP\, 2010). He presented the BBC television documentary\, The Narnia Code (2009). \nThough based at Blackfriars in Oxford\, Dr. Ward also has appointments at two American universities.  He is\nProfessor of Apologetics at Houston Baptist University\, Texas\, and is Visiting Professor at St Katherine College\, California.  He is thus employed at three institutions of higher education: one Catholic\, one Protestant\, and one Eastern Orthodox.   \nAs an Anglican clergyman\, he served as Chaplain of St Peter’s College in the University of Oxford from 2009 to 2012 and as Chaplain of Peterhouse in the University of Cambridge between 2004 and 2007. He was resident Warden of The Kilns\, Lewis’s Oxford home\, from 1996 to 1999. DESCRIPTION:After the success of his initial book Roads to Rome\, the English author John Beaumont has completed a new much longer volume of American conversion stories\, to be published by Fidelity Press. The book\, which contains a foreword and afterword by Fr. C. John McCloskey III examines the careers and writings of almost five hundred notable converts\, containing touching stories of all shapes and sizes. \nThere have been and are many eminent and well known American converts to the Catholic faith who inspire and stimulate the faithful and all are covered here: Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton\, Saint Kateri Tekakwitha\, Orestes Brownson\, Dorothy Day\, Walker Percy\, Thomas Merton\, Mortimer Adler\, Avery Dulles\, Russell Kirk\, and Clare Booth Luce; media celebrities\, such as Buffalo Bill\, Gary Cooper\, Bob Hope\, Jane Wyman\, and John Wayne; and from sport\, the great Bobby Jones\, George Gipp\, and Knute Rockne. \nJohn Beaumont\, Author\n\nMr. Beaumont\, the author\, is a lawyer by training and was formerly Head of the School of Law at Leeds Metropolitan University\, England. He has written several books on the Law of Evidence and is the author of Roads to Rome: A Guide to Notable Converts from Britain and Ireland from the Reformation to the Present Day (2010). \nFr. C. From 1998-2002\, he was the Director of the Catholic Information Center for the Archdiocese of Washington\, D.C. A native of Washington\, D.C.\, he received a degree in Economics from Columbia University in 1975.  He was the U.S. representative for the ecclesiastical faculties of the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome and the University of Navarre in Pamplona Spain from 1984-2003.

Wilson (Bill) Miscamble\n\n  \nRev. Wilson D. (Bill) Miscamble\, C.S.C. joined the permanent faculty at Notre Dame in 1988. The Australian native was born on July 23\, 1953\, and educated at the University of Queensland\, from which he graduated in 1973 and obtained a master’s degree three years later.  In 1976 he came to Notre Dame to pursue graduate studies in history.  He received his doctoral degree in 1980.  He then served for two years as North American analyst in the Office of National Assessments\, Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet\, Canberra\, Australia. In August of 1982 he returned to Notre Dame and entered the priestly formation program of the Congregation of Holy Cross.  He was ordained a priest on April 9\, 1988.  In the History Department he teaches at all levels from first year courses to doctoral seminars.  He chaired the History Department from 1993 to 1998.  In addition to his responsibilities on the history faculty\, he has served (2000-04) as Rector and Superior of Moreau Seminary\, the principal formation site for the Congregation of Holy Cross in North America.  Fr. Miscamble’s primary research interests are American foreign policy since World War II and the role of Catholics in 20th century U.S. foreign relations and political life.  His book entitled George F. Kennan and the Making of American Foreign Policy\, 1947-1950 was published in 1992 by Princeton University Press and received the Harry S. Truman Book Award.  He also has authored Keeping the Faith\, Making a Difference (2000)\, and edited American Political History: Essays on the State of the Discipline [with John Marszalek] (1997)\, and Go Forth and Do Good: Memorable Notre Dame Commencement Addresses (2003).  His 2007 book From Roosevelt to Truman: Potsdam\, Hiroshima and the Cold War was published by Cambridge University Press and received the Harry S. Truman Book Award in 2008. More recently Father Miscamble has published  The Most Controversial Decision: Truman\, the Atomic Bombs and the Defeat of Japan (2011) and For Notre Dame: Battling for the Heart and Soul of a Catholic University (2013).  He also has published a number of other articles\, essays and reviews. Father Miscamble has notable interests in the areas of Catholic higher education and Catholics and public life and he lectures and writes on these topics.  During the 2013-14 academic year he holds a visiting appointment as the J.S. SUMMARY:Jérôme Lejeune: A Man of Faith and Medicine
DESCRIPTION:A Discussion on the Life\, Work\, and Cause for Canonization of Dr. Jérôme Lejeune\nIn 1958\, Dr. Jérôme Lejeune discovered that an extra copy of chromosome 21 was responsible for the condition known as Down syndrome.  He then dedicated his life to conducting research for a cure for Down syndrome and caring for thousands of those affected by it. Dr. Lejeune once said: “Just one sentence\, spoken by Jesus himself\, will suffice to determine our behavior: ‘Whatever you do for the least of my brethren\, you do it for me.” Throughout his life\, he was an outspoken advocate for the dignity of every human life and was eventually named the first president of the Pontifical Academy for Life by Pope John Paul II. The cause of the beatification and canonization of Jérôme Lejeune was opened on June 28\, 2007. \nThe witness of Jérôme Lejeune is critical today in a culture which so often equates human worth with utility. Dr. Lejeune\, by contrast\, believed that every human life\, even a life with unexpected characteristics\, has an intrinsic value\, and that recognizing such value is necessary for our own happiness. His work demonstrates that it is possible to love each person as a gift and that making a gift of ourselves will lead to true fulfillment.  During this presentation\, the panelists will explore how this kind of love is possible by looking at the life of Lejeune and the experience of parents of children with Down syndrome. \nSpeakers\n\nMark Bradford\, President of the Jérôme Lejeune Foundation USA\nMark Bradford has served as President of the Jérôme Lejeune Foundation\, USA\, based in Philadelphia\, PA\, since July 1\, 2012. Prior to that he was the Executive Vice President at The National Catholic Bioethics Center (NCBC) where his responsibilities included managing the daily operations of the Center\, promotion of the Center’s programs\, fund-raising\, and constituent relations. After many years in secondary education and then as a seminary professor\, Mark turned his attention to business administration\, first as a head of school for a small Catholic prep school\, before joining the staff of the NCBC. \nThe Jérôme Lejeune Foundation was founded in 1996 and is the world’s largest private funder of research into Down syndrome and other genetic intellectual disabilities. With offices in Paris and Philadelphia\, the Foundation seeks to provide hope to families\, and to fund the most promising research being conducted throughout the world to improve the lives of those living with genetic intellectual disabilities. Steven Brown\, Parent\nSteven Brown is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at The Catholic University of America\, and editor of A Reason Open to God: On Universities\, Education\, and Culture (2013)\, a collection of speeches\, letters\, and addresses by Pope Benedict XVI on the relationship between faith and intellectual life. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Provost Award for Overall Teaching in 2011. Prior to being appointed postulator\, she had served as vice-postulator during the diocesan process\, which opened in June 2007 in Paris. \nBefore being asked to serve the Cause for Canonization of Jérôme Lejeune\, from 1999 to 2012 she worked for the Jérôme Lejeune Foundation in Paris as Editor in chief of Genethique (a daily newsletter and analysis in bioethics published by the Foundation)\, and also as Communications Director. SUMMARY:The Nominee: A Political and Spiritual Journey with Judge Leslie Southwick
DESCRIPTION:President George W. Bush nominated Leslie H. Southwick in 2007 to the federal appeals court\, Fifth Circuit\, based in New Orleans. Initially\, Southwick seemed a consensus nominee. Just days before his hearing\, though\, a progressive advocacy group distributed the results of research it had conducted on opinions of the state court on which he had served for twelve years. Two opinions Southwick had signed off on but not written became the center of the debate over the next five months. One dealt with a racial slur by a state worker\, the other with a child custody battle between a father and a bisexual mother. Apparent bipartisan agreement for a quick confirmation turned into a long set of battles in the Judiciary Committee\, on the floor of the Senate\, and in the media. \nIn early August\, Senator Dianne Feinstein completely surprised her committee colleagues by supporting Southwick. Hers was the one Democratic vote needed to move the nomination to the full Senate. Then in late October\, by a two-vote margin\, he received the votes needed to end a filibuster. Confirmation followed. \nSouthwick recounts the four years he spent at the Department of Justice\, the twelve years on a state court\, and his military service in Iraq while deployed with a Mississippi National Guard Brigade. During the nomination inferno Southwick maintained a diary of the many events\, the conversations and emails\, the joys and despairs\, and quite often\, the prayers and sense of peace his faith gave him–his memoir bears significant spiritual content. Throughout the struggle\, Southwick learned that perspective and growth are important to all of us when making decisions\, and he grew to accept his critics\, regardless of outcome. That’s the question that was fasing Chad and Ashley Judice when their unborn son was diagnosed with spina bifida in a 16-weeks ultrasound. In this book\, Rychlak and his co-author Ion Mihai Pacepa\, the highest ranking Soviet officer ever to defect to the West\, explain how the Soviet intelligence machine was used to advance communism by tearing down Western values and attacking religious leaders\, including Pope Pius XII and Cardinals Mindszenty\, Stepinac\, and  Wyszynski. Unfortunately\, that deception continues to reverberate today. At this talk\, Rychlak will both explore the great work done by the Church during WWII and reveal the Soviet hand in distorting the historical truth. \n  \n\nProfessor Ronald J. Rychlak is the Butler Snow Professor of Law at the University of Mississippi\, where he has been on the law school faculty since 1987. He has performed diplomatic work for both the United States and the Holy See and he has served as an advisor to the Vatican’s delegation at the United Nations since 2000. \nRon is on advisory boards for the Catholic League\, Ave Maria School of Law\, the Bellarmine Forum\, Angelico Press\, and the Society of Catholic Social Scientists (SCSS). In 2013\, the SCSS presented Ron with the Pope Pius XI Award for Social Scholarship; in 2008 the Archdiocese of Zagreb presented him with a Blessed Cardinal Stepinac medal; and in 2012 the Ole Miss Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame recognized his lifetime contribution to amateur football. \nRon is the author or co-author of eight books\, including Hitler\, the War\, and the Pope\, which the Congregation for the Causes of Saints called “definitive” in its final report on Pope Pius XII.
