SUMMARY:The Seven Big Myths about Marriage
DESCRIPTION:What Science\, Faith\, and Philosophy Teach Us about Love and Happiness\nAbout the Book\nThe Seven Big Myths about Marriage:  What Science\, Faith\, and Philosophy Teach Us about Love and Happiness explores some of the most interesting and vexing problems in contemporary life. Appealing to reason rather than religious authority\, the book tackles the most controversial and talked about positions of the Catholic Church – on contraception\, on marriage\, on reproductive technologies\, on cohabitation\, and on divorce – arguing for the reasonableness of the Church’s views on these issues. \nThe book’s interdisciplinary approach\, following the precedent of Thomas Aquinas\, looks to human happiness and fulfillment\, properly understood\, in seeking the answers to questions about how to live. It aims to show to skeptical readers that what the Catholic Church teaches about controversial issues is rationally justified by considering evidence from psychology\, sociology\, and philosophy. \n\nAbout Dr. Christopher Kaczor\nDr. Christopher Kaczor is William E. Simon Visiting Fellow in Religion and Public Life in the James Madison Program  at Princeton University. He graduated from the Honors Program of Boston College and earned a Ph.D. four years later from the University of Notre Dame. SUMMARY:Something Other Than God
DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Fulwiler told herself she was happy. Why wouldn’t she be? She made good money as a programmer at a hot tech start-up\, had just married a guy with a stack of Ivy League degrees\, and lived in a twenty-first-floor condo where she could sip sauvignon blanc while watching the sun set behind the hills of Austin. \nRaised in a happy\, atheist home\, Jennifer had the freedom to think for herself and play by her own rules. Yet a creeping darkness followed her all of her life. Finally\, one winter night\, it drove her to the edge of her balcony\, making her ask once and for all why anything mattered. At that moment everything she knew and believed was shattered. \nAsking the unflinching questions about life and death\, good and evil\, led Jennifer to Christianity\, the religion she had reviled since she was an awkward\, sceptical child growing up in the Bible Belt. Mortified by this turn of events\, she hid her quest from everyone except her husband\, concealing religious books in opaque bags as if they were porn and locking herself in public bathroom stalls to read the Bible. \nJust when Jennifer had a profound epiphany that gave her the courage to convert\, she was diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition-and the only treatment was directly at odds with the doctrines of her new-found faith. Something Other Than God is a poignant\, profound and often funny tale of one woman who set out to find the meaning of life and discovered that true happiness sometimes requires losing it all. \nJennifer Fulwiler\nJennifer Fulwiler is a programmer-turned-writer who chronicles her experiences of faith and family life on her popular blog\, ConversionDiary.com. Her articles have also appeared in America\, Our Sunday Visitor\, Envoy and National Review Online. She has been a guest on the television showsFox and Friends\, Life on the Rock\, and The Choices We Face\, and and was also the subject of the reality show Minor Revisions. She and her husband\, Joe\, live in Austin\, Texas\, with their six young children.

SUMMARY:Got Religion? A Young Professionals Happy Hour with Naomi Schaefer Riley
DESCRIPTION:Got Religion?\nWhy are young people dropping out of religious institutions? Can anything be done to reverse the trend? In Got Religion?\, Naomi Schaefer Riley examines the reasons for the defection\, why we should care\, and how some communities are successfully addressing the problem. \nThe traditional markers of growing up are getting married and becoming financially independent. But young adults are delaying these milestones\, sometimes for a full decade longer than their parents and grandparents. This new phase of “emerging adulthood” is diminishing the involvement of young people in religious institutions\, sapping the strength and vitality of faith communities\, and creating a more barren religious landscape for the young adults who do eventually decide to return to it. Yet\, clearly there are some churches\, synagogues\, and mosques that are making strides in bringing young people back to religion. \nGot Religion? offers in-depth\, on-the-ground reporting about the most successful of these institutions and shows how many of the structural solutions for one religious group can be adapted to work for another. \nThe faith communities young people attach themselves to are not necessarily the biggest or the most flashy. They are not the wealthiest or the ones employing the latest technology. Rather\, they are the ones that create stability for young people\, that give them real responsibility in a community and that help them form the habits of believers that will last a lifetime. \nNaomi Schaefer Riley\nNaomi Schaefer Riley is a weekly columnist for the New York Post and a former Wall Street Journal editor. She is the author of Til Faith Do Us Part: How Interfaith Marriage Is Transforming America\, God on the Quad\, and The Faculty Lounges. She lives with her husband\, Jason\, and their three children in suburban New York City. \nYoung Professionals Happy Hours are open to those between the ages of 21-35. $15 admission covers food and beverages.

SUMMARY:The Feasts with Cardinal Wuerl
DESCRIPTION:How the Church Year Forms Us as Catholics\nEvery day is a holiday in the Catholic Church. In their latest collaboration\, Cardinal Wuerl and Mike Aquilina examine the history and traditions behind both favorite and forgotten holidays\, from Christmas to Easter\, from the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity to the Feast of the Holy Angels\n\nCatholic faith is festive\, and the Catholic faithful count their days by celebrating the mysteries of Jesus’ life. There is a message to be found in the passing of days\, weeks\, and seasons. Through the feasts\, ordinary Christians learn the life of Christ\, share it\, and come to imitate it. \nThis book continues the work the authors began in their books The Mass and The Church\, exploring the meaning and purpose of the most basic and beloved aspects of Catholic life. Each chapter uncovers the biblical origins and development of one of the great feasts or fasts — Advent\, Epiphany\, the Holy Angels\, all the Marian feasts\, and even this very day. The calendar can be a catechism for Catholics who know how to live it. \n“The feasts form us\,” write the authors\, “They help to make us and remake us according to the pattern of the life of Jesus Christ. We number our days as we walk in his footsteps\, from his birth to his baptism\, from his passion to his resurrection\, from his Ascension to his sending of the Spirit to make us saints. We do this faithfully every year\, and it defines us as who we are.”

SUMMARY:Collin Raye "A Voice Undefeated"
DESCRIPTION:When Collin Raye’s powerful\, golden voice dazzled the country music scene in 1991 with his Number One hit single “Love\, Me”\, country music listeners fell in love with one of the great voices of our time. A new star was rising\, and Collin’s success continued throughout the nineties with over eight million records sold. \nRaye’s autobiography\, A Voice Undefeated\, gives readers a down-to-earth account of the author’s personal and professional life. From his childhood in Arkansas and Texas through his days with the Wray Brothers Band in Oregon and Reno to his rise to international stardom\, this book is both a journey to the top of the music world and an intimate diary of a soul that has suffered great professional and personal losses. \nMany who love Collin Raye\, the successful country music artist\, don’t know much about Collin Raye\, the man\, and the many trials he has endured with faith and courage. Most recently his beloved nine-year-old granddaughter\, Haley\, died in 2010 from an undiagnosed neurological disease. Since Haley’s death\, Collin has become an advocate for the sick and disabled and has established the Haley Bell Blesséd Chair Foundation to provide wheelchairs to families with special needs children. \nThis is a remarkable\, inspirational story told by the man who lived it. It is a story of faith\, of struggle\, of suffering\, of profound love\, and ultimately of triumph in the midst of tragedy. \n \nCollin Raye\nCollin Raye is one of America’s best-loved country singers. He produced twenty-four Top Ten singles\, of which sixteen were Number One hits\, and a total of five straight platinum and two gold albums\, which is a record for the Epic label to this day. He is an advocate for sick and disabled persons and continues to perform live throughout the country. \n*$15 Admission at the door includes food and drinks. As a CIC Young Professional Program Happy Hour\, this event is open to those between the ages of 21-35.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Battling for the Heart and Soul of a Catholic University
DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED \nThis lecture\, originally scheduled for April 3\, has been postponed. Fr. Miscamble will be traveling  to Australia for his father’s funeral. Please keep the Miscamble family in your prayers.  \nA new date for this event will be announced at a later time.   \nRev. Wilson Miscamble\, author and professor at the University of Notre Dame\, discusses Catholic higher education \n \nAbout the Book\nFor Notre Dame gathers together the important contributions of a devoted Holy Cross priest to the continuing debate over the mission and identity of the University of Notre Dame. Read together\, these essays and addresses by one of the most consistent and committed participants in this ongoing discussion serve to cast vital light on many of the major issues that Notre Dame has confronted in the past two decades. \nFr. Bill Miscamble’s spirited essays in For Notre Dame cover a range of topics and reflect his multiple roles at Notre Dame\, where he has taught for a quarter century. An award-winning scholar and a noted teacher Miscamble writes thoughtfully of the place of teaching and research in Catholic universities. Crucially\, he also is unafraid to explore more contentious subjects like the composition of the faculty and the responsibilities of faculty members who serve in a Catholic university like Notre Dame. Nor has he backed away from the controversies that have beset Notre Dame in recent years. In this volume a reader can learn how he courageously addressed such matters as academic freedom and The Vagina Monologues and\, of course\, how he protested the Notre Dame decision to honor President Barack Obama at its 2009 Commencement. \nThroughout this engaging volume\, Miscamble’s distinctive voice rings clear. His passion for Notre Dame’s Catholic mission is evident on every page. Also evident is his deep concern for the moral and spiritual well-being of Notre Dame’s students and his deep commitment to the priesthood and to the Congregation of Holy Cross. For Notre Dame is essential reading for all those who love Notre Dame and who are interested in its past\, present\, and future. It is a book that asks its readers to reflect deeply about the ongoing struggle to determine the university’s present mission and its future course. Readers – including faculty\, students\, administrators\, trustees and alumni – will surely discover through its pages how they too might stand more truly for Notre Dame. \n\nAbout Rev. Wilson (Bill) Miscamble\n\n  \nRev. Wilson D. (Bill) Miscamble\, C.S.C. joined the permanent faculty at Notre Dame in 1988. The Australian native was born on July 23\, 1953\, and educated at the University of Queensland\, from which he graduated in 1973 and obtained a master’s degree three years later.  In 1976 he came to Notre Dame to pursue graduate studies in history.  He received his doctoral degree in 1980.  He then served for two years as North American analyst in the Office of National Assessments\, Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet\, Canberra\, Australia. In August of 1982 he returned to Notre Dame and entered the priestly formation program of the Congregation of Holy Cross.  He was ordained a priest on April 9\, 1988.  In the History Department he teaches at all levels from first year courses to doctoral seminars.  He chaired the History Department from 1993 to 1998.  In addition to his responsibilities on the history faculty\, he has served (2000-04) as Rector and Superior of Moreau Seminary\, the principal formation site for the Congregation of Holy Cross in North America.  Fr. Miscamble’s primary research interests are American foreign policy since World War II and the role of Catholics in 20th century U.S. foreign relations and political life.  His book entitled George F. Kennan and the Making of American Foreign Policy\, 1947-1950 was published in 1992 by Princeton University Press and received the Harry S. Truman Book Award.  He also has authored Keeping the Faith\, Making a Difference (2000)\, and edited American Political History: Essays on the State of the Discipline [with John Marszalek] (1997)\, and Go Forth and Do Good: Memorable Notre Dame Commencement Addresses (2003).  His 2007 book From Roosevelt to Truman: Potsdam\, Hiroshima and the Cold War was published by Cambridge University Press and received the Harry S. Truman Book Award in 2008. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture and reception celebrating the newly released work\, A Catechism for Business.  This book launch event will feature remarks by editors Andrew Abela and Joseph Capizzi. A Catechism for Business collects the Church’s teaching on a wide range of topics\, including advertising\, hiring and firing\, investing\, outsourcing\, wages\, working conditions\, and unions. \nAbout the Book\nBusiness leaders face ethical dilemmas on a daily basis. Unfortunately\, many in the business world are ill prepared to deal with the ethical dilemmas they inevitably face in business. The consequences are frequently reported in the news media\, casting a negative light on all business. \nCatholic business leaders in particular\, operate in a world where they are constantly challenged to lead their associates while informing themselves on the rich social teachings of the Catholic Church. A Catechism for Business serves as a reference guide to those business leaders\, providing them the sources of Catholic social teaching so they are better prepared to apply those principles in business and articulate them to colleagues. \nOver the centuries\, Catholic social doctrine has developed as the Church has responded to specific issues and questions. The result? A business leader must be familiar with a breadth of Church documents and teachings if he is to find the principles to guide him on a specific moral question. A Catechism for Business draws together the rich teachings of the Catholic Church as they relate to business\, organized by topic and question. \n\nIs it morally acceptable to minimize taxes using legal tax loopholes?\nWhat is a just wage?\nWhat is a just price?\nIs it morally acceptable to pay bribes in cultures where they appear necessary to conduct business?\n\nThe business leader will not find the text to be an interpretation of Catholic social teaching on business. Rather\, the catechism provides references to the relevant social teachings that address his specific question. It is up to him to prayerfully apply those principles to his specific situation. \nThis essential guide for any Catholic business leader was compiled and edited by Joseph E. Capizzi\, Ph.D. and Andrew V. Abela\, Ph.D. Dr. Capizzi is head of moral theology at CUA’s School of Theology and Religious Studies. Dr. Abela is dean of the new School of Business and Economics at The Catholic University of America\, which is dedicated to infusing the Social Doctrine of the Church and the natural law into economic life. \n  \nSpeakers\n\nAndrew V. Abela\, Ph.D.\nDr. Abela is the Dean of the School of Business & Economics and Associate Professor of Marketing at the Catholic University of America\, in Washington\, DC. His research on the integrity of the marketing process\, including marketing ethics\, Catholic Social Doctrine\, and internal communication\, has been published in several academic journals\, including the Journal of Marketing\, the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science\, the Journal of Business Ethics\, and the Journal of Markets & Morality\, and in two books. He is the co-editor of the Catechism for Business\, forthcoming from Catholic University Press\, and winner of the 2009 Novak Award\, a $10\,000 prize given by the Acton Institute for “significant contributions to the study of the relationship between religion and economic liberty.” \nDr. Abela also provides consulting and training in internal communications to several major corporations\, including JPMorgan Chase\, Microsoft Corporation\, HJ Heinz\, and the Executive Office of the President of the United States. Prior to his academic career\, he spent several years in industry as brand manager at Procter & Gamble\, management consultant with McKinsey & Company\, and Managing Director of the Marketing Leadership Council of the Corporate Executive Board. Capizzi is Associate Professor of Moral Theology at the Catholic University of America. He teaches in the areas of social and political theology\, with special interests in issues in peace and war\, citizenship\, political authority\, and Augustinian theology. SUMMARY:Jérôme Lejeune: A Man of Faith and Medicine
DESCRIPTION:A Discussion on the Life\, Work\, and Cause for Canonization of Dr. Jérôme Lejeune\nIn 1958\, Dr. Jérôme Lejeune discovered that an extra copy of chromosome 21 was responsible for the condition known as Down syndrome.  He then dedicated his life to conducting research for a cure for Down syndrome and caring for thousands of those affected by it. Dr. Lejeune once said: “Just one sentence\, spoken by Jesus himself\, will suffice to determine our behavior: ‘Whatever you do for the least of my brethren\, you do it for me.” Throughout his life\, he was an outspoken advocate for the dignity of every human life and was eventually named the first president of the Pontifical Academy for Life by Pope John Paul II. The cause of the beatification and canonization of Jérôme Lejeune was opened on June 28\, 2007. \nThe witness of Jérôme Lejeune is critical today in a culture which so often equates human worth with utility. Dr. Lejeune\, by contrast\, believed that every human life\, even a life with unexpected characteristics\, has an intrinsic value\, and that recognizing such value is necessary for our own happiness. His work demonstrates that it is possible to love each person as a gift and that making a gift of ourselves will lead to true fulfillment.  During this presentation\, the panelists will explore how this kind of love is possible by looking at the life of Lejeune and the experience of parents of children with Down syndrome. \nSpeakers\n\nMark Bradford\, President of the Jérôme Lejeune Foundation USA\nMark Bradford has served as President of the Jérôme Lejeune Foundation\, USA\, based in Philadelphia\, PA\, since July 1\, 2012. Prior to that he was the Executive Vice President at The National Catholic Bioethics Center (NCBC) where his responsibilities included managing the daily operations of the Center\, promotion of the Center’s programs\, fund-raising\, and constituent relations. After many years in secondary education and then as a seminary professor\, Mark turned his attention to business administration\, first as a head of school for a small Catholic prep school\, before joining the staff of the NCBC. \nThe Jérôme Lejeune Foundation was founded in 1996 and is the world’s largest private funder of research into Down syndrome and other genetic intellectual disabilities. With offices in Paris and Philadelphia\, the Foundation seeks to provide hope to families\, and to fund the most promising research being conducted throughout the world to improve the lives of those living with genetic intellectual disabilities. The Foundation’s mission is based upon three closely joined pillars of activity: research\, care\, and advocacy\, all carried out in a spirit of profound respect for the dignity of all human persons. \nMark is married to his wife Denise\, and together they have 7 children\, one of which is blessed with an extra 21st chromosome. \n  \nDr. J. Steven Brown\, Parent\nSteven Brown is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at The Catholic University of America\, and editor of A Reason Open to God: On Universities\, Education\, and Culture (2013)\, a collection of speeches\, letters\, and addresses by Pope Benedict XVI on the relationship between faith and intellectual life. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Provost Award for Overall Teaching in 2011. He is an Associate Editor of HVAC&R Research\, and is a registered professional engineer in the State of Maryland. \n  \nMs. Aude Dugast\, Postulator for Dr. Lejeune’s Cause for Canonization\nAude Dugast has served as Postulator of the Cause for Canonization of Jérôme Lejeune in Rome since the beginning of the Roman process\, in September 2012. Prior to being appointed postulator\, she had served as vice-postulator during the diocesan process\, which opened in June 2007 in Paris. \nBefore being asked to serve the Cause for Canonization of Jérôme Lejeune\, from 1999 to 2012 she worked for the Jérôme Lejeune Foundation in Paris as Editor in chief of Genethique (a daily newsletter and analysis in bioethics published by the Foundation)\, and also as Communications Director. As Communications Director\, she was also in charge of fundraising and\, thanks to her academic formation in philosophy\, of bioethics as well. She was particularly involved in the publication of the Manuel Bioetique des Jeunes (in English\, “A Student’s Guide to Bioethics”). \nIn her last two years at the Jérôme Lejeune Foundation\, she was Director of the new Bioethic Studies Department\, and in charge of developing research on new topics regarding Bioethics and Human life. At that point\, she turned her attention to the New Feminism\, looking for a new way to promote the Culture of Life. Prior to joining the Jérôme Lejeune Foundation staff in 1999\, she was a teacher in secondary education for orphans\, and developed a department of communication in an association for the visually impaired. \n[button type=”churchope_button” url=”https://www.facebook.com/events/1401010886826001/” target=”on” button_color_fon=”#002f5f” ]Join the event on Facebook[/button] \nThis event is Co-Sponsored by:

SUMMARY:Roman Pilgrimage with George Weigel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this Lenten book event. Take a spiritual and aesthetic journey\, as the beauty of the station churches leads to reflection on the deepest truths of Christianity.\nThe annual Lenten pilgrimage to dozens of Rome’s most striking churches is a sacred tradition dating back almost two millennia\, to the earliest days of Christianity. Along this historic spiritual pathway\, today’s pilgrims confront the mysteries of the Christian faith through a program of biblical and early Christian readings amplified by some of the greatest art and architecture of western civilization. \nIn Roman Pilgrimage\, bestselling theologian and papal biographer George Weigel\, art historian Elizabeth Lev\, and photographer Stephen Weigel lead readers through this unique religious and aesthetic journey with magnificent photographs and revealing commentaries on the pilgrimage’s liturgies\, art\, and architecture. Through reflections on each day’s readings about faith and doubt\, heroism and weakness\, self-examination and conversion\, sin and grace\, Rome’s familiar sites take on a new resonance. And along that same historical path\, typically unexplored treasures—artifacts of ancient history and hidden artistic wonders—appear in their original luster\, revealing new dimensions of one of the world’s most intriguing and multi-layered cities. \nA compelling guide to the Eternal City\, the Lenten Season\, and the itinerary of conversion that is Christian life throughout the year\, Roman Pilgrimage reminds readers that the imitation of Christ through faith\, hope\, and love is the template of all true discipleship\, as the exquisite beauty of the Roman station churches invites reflection on the deepest truths of Christianity. \nGeorge Weigel\nGeorge Weigel is Distinguished Senior Fellow of Washington’s Ethics and Public Policy Center and Vatican analyst for NBC News. The author of more than twenty books\, including Evangelical Catholicism and The Courage to Be Catholic\, he lives in North Bethesda\, Maryland. \n\nStephen Weigel\nStephen Weigel is a professional photographer and the principal of Stephen Weigel Photography. \n[button type=”churchope_button” url=”https://www.facebook.com/events/463841463717389/” target=”on” button_color_fon=”#002f5f” ]Join the event on Facebook[/button] \n

SUMMARY:The Nominee: A Political and Spiritual Journey with Judge Leslie Southwick
DESCRIPTION:President George W. Bush nominated Leslie H. Southwick in 2007 to the federal appeals court\, Fifth Circuit\, based in New Orleans. Initially\, Southwick seemed a consensus nominee. Just days before his hearing\, though\, a progressive advocacy group distributed the results of research it had conducted on opinions of the state court on which he had served for twelve years. Two opinions Southwick had signed off on but not written became the center of the debate over the next five months. One dealt with a racial slur by a state worker\, the other with a child custody battle between a father and a bisexual mother. Apparent bipartisan agreement for a quick confirmation turned into a long set of battles in the Judiciary Committee\, on the floor of the Senate\, and in the media. \nIn early August\, Senator Dianne Feinstein completely surprised her committee colleagues by supporting Southwick. Hers was the one Democratic vote needed to move the nomination to the full Senate. Then in late October\, by a two-vote margin\, he received the votes needed to end a filibuster. Confirmation followed. \nSouthwick recounts the four years he spent at the Department of Justice\, the twelve years on a state court\, and his military service in Iraq while deployed with a Mississippi National Guard Brigade. During the nomination inferno Southwick maintained a diary of the many events\, the conversations and emails\, the joys and despairs\, and quite often\, the prayers and sense of peace his faith gave him–his memoir bears significant spiritual content. Throughout the struggle\, Southwick learned that perspective and growth are important to all of us when making decisions\, and he grew to accept his critics\, regardless of outcome. In The Nominee there is no rancor\, and instead the book expresses the understanding that the difficult road to success was the most helpful one for him\, both as a man and as a judge. \n  \n  \nEvent co-sponsored by:

SUMMARY:Business Secrets of the Trappist Monks
DESCRIPTION:One CEO’s Quest for Meaning and Authenticity\nA CIC Young Professionals Happy Hour Event with author\, August Turak*\n “This book is both quietly provocative and groundbreaking. With great simplicity\, August Turak unlocks these monastic ‘secrets’ that go to the core of succeeding in an economic era in which authenticity and passion have become key. Who knew the monks had so many things right?”   —Tom Freston\, former CEO of Viacom and MTV Networks \n\nAugust Turak is a successful entrepreneur\, corporate executive\, and award-winning author who attributes much of his success to living and working alongside the Trappist monks of Mepkin Abbey for seventeen years. As a frequent monastic guest\, he learned firsthand from the monks as they grew an incredibly successful portfolio of businesses. \nService and selflessness are at the heart of the 1\,500-year-old monastic tradition’s remarkable business success. It is an ancient though immensely relevant economic model that preserves what is positive and productive about capitalism while transcending its ethical limitations and internal contradictions. Combining vivid case studies from his thirty-year business career with intimate portraits of the monks at work\, Turak shows how Trappist principles can be successfully applied to a variety of secular business settings and to our personal lives as well. He demonstrates that monks and people like Warren Buffett are wildly successful not despite their high principles but because of them. Turak also introduces other “transformational organizations” that share the crucial monastic business strategies so critical for success. \nAfter a corporate career with companies like MTV\, August Turak founded two highly successful software businesses\, Raleigh Group International (RGI) and Elsinore Technologies. He received a B.A. in history from the University of Pittsburgh and is pursuing a Masters in theology at St. John’s University\, Minnesota. Turak’s essay “Brother John” received the grand prize in the John Templeton Foundation’s Power of Purpose essay contest. He has been featured in the Wall Street Journal\, Fast Company\, Selling Magazine\, the New York Times\, and Business Week\, and is a popular leadership contributor at Forbes.com. His website is www.augustturak.com. \n\nReviews: \n\n“Business Secrets of the Trappist Monks is an eye-opening read. August Turak delivers a timely\, insightful message about the power of purpose and the surprising ways that service can fuel success. The engaging narrative—which is grounded in Turak’s rich\, diverse experiences as an entrepreneur\, corporate executive\, and monastic guest—paints a picture of a path to profits that is both pioneering and provocative.” —Adam Grant\, author of Give and Take: A Revolutionary Approach to Success \n“I truly believe this book will improve not only your business but your life. Read it. Apply what you learn and then\, in keeping with the very spirit of the book\, pass it on to someone else.” —Michael Keaton\, actor \n  \n*$15 Admission includes food and drinks. SUMMARY:"An Anxious Age"\, Joseph Bottum
DESCRIPTION:An Anxious Age\nWe live in a profoundly spiritual age—but in a very strange way\, different from every other moment of our history. Huge swaths of American culture are driven by manic spiritual anxiety and relentless supernatural worry. Radicals and traditionalists\, liberals and conservatives\, together with politicians\, artists\, environmentalists\, followers of food fads\, and the chattering classes of television commentators: America is filled with people frantically seeking confirmation of their own essential goodness. We are a nation desperate to stand on the side of morality–to know that we are righteous and dwell in the light. \nOr so Joseph Bottum argues in An Anxious Age\, an account of modern America as a morality tale\, formed by its spiritual disturbances. And the cause\, he claims\, is the most significant and least noticed historical fact of the last fifty years: the collapse of the Mainline Protestant churches that were the source of social consensus and cultural unity. Our dangerous spiritual anxieties\, broken loose from the churches that once contained them\, now madden everything in American life. \nUpdating The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism\, Max Weber’s sociological classic\, An Anxious Age undertakes two case studies in contemporary social class\, adrift in a nation without the religious understandings that gave it meaning. Looking at the college-educated elite he calls “The Poster Children\,” Bottum sees the post-Protestant heirs of the old Mainline Protestant domination of culture: dutiful descendants who claim the high social position of their Christian ancestors even while they reject their ancestors’ Christianity. Turning to “The Swallows of Capistrano\,” the Catholics formed by the pontificate of John Paul II\, Bottum evaluates the early victories–and later defeats–of the attempt to substitute Catholicism for the dying Mainline voice in public life. \nSweeping across American intellectual and cultural history\, An Anxious Age traces the course of national religion and warns about the strange angels and even stranger demons with which we now wrestle. Insightful and contrarian\, wise and unexpected\, An Anxious Age ranks among the great modern accounts of American culture. \nJoseph Bottum\nJoseph Bottum is one of the nation’s most widely published and influential essayists—and author of The Christmas Plains\, classic reflections on the meaning of Christmas and the American prairie. A bestselling writer of Kindle ebooks\, with work in journals from the Atlantic to the Wall Street Journal and Washington Post\, Bottum is the former literary editor of theWeekly Standard and editor-in-chief of First Things. He holds a Ph.D. in medieval philosophy and has done television commentary for programs from NBC’s Meet the Press to the PBS NewsHour. The author of two volumes of poetry\, and writer of short stories and song lyrics\, Bottum lives with his family far off in the Black Hills of South Dakota. During the spring of 2014\, he will be Distinguished Visiting Professor at Houston Baptist University.

SUMMARY:Renewal
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Kathryn Lopez interviews Anne Hendershott and Christopher White about their recently published work\, Renewal: How a New Generation of Faithful Priests and Bishops Is Revitalizing the Catholic Church.  \nIn the wake of the clergy abuse scandal of the last decade\, many media commentators predicted the “end” of the Catholic priesthood. Demands for an end to celibacy\, coupled with calls for women’s ordination\, dominated discussions on the effectiveness of the Catholic Church in America. Renewal argues that rather than a decline of the priesthood and a diminishing influence of the Catholic Church\, we are living in a time of transformation and revitalization. The aging generation of progressives that continues to lobby Church leaders to change Catholic teachings on reproductive rights\, same-sex marriage and women’s ordination is being replaced by younger men and women who are attracted to the Church because of the very timelessness of its teachings. \n  \nAnne Hendershott is Professor of Sociology and Director of the Veritas Center for Ethics in Public Life at Franciscan University in Steubenville\, Ohio. Previously\, she was a Distinguished Visiting Professor at The King’s College in New York City. She moved to The King’s College in 2008 after spending more than 15 years as a tenured full-professor of sociology at the University of San Diego. She received her PhD in Sociology at Kent State University in 1988\, and was the James Madison Fellow at Princeton University in 2005. A frequent contributor to popular press outlets including Catholic World Report\, the Wall Street Journal\, Crisis\, and others\, she publishes frequently on issues of importance within the Catholic Church. She is the author of five previous books including Status Envy: The Politics of Catholic Higher Education (Transaction\, 2009)\, The Politics of Deviance (Encounter Books\, 2002)\, The Politics of Abortion (Encounter Books\, 2006)\, The Reluctant Caregivers (Bergin and Garvey\, 2000)\, and Moving for Work (University Press of America\, 1994). \nChristopher White is the Director of Education and Programs at the Center for Bioethics and Culture. He writes frequently on matters of public policy and social ethics\, and is a regular contributor to many print and online publications\, including the Wall Street Journal\, USA Today\, National Review Online\, Catholic World Report\, Human Life Review\, First Things\, Public Discourse\, and the National Catholic Register.
