SUMMARY:Meeting God in the Upper Room: Three Moments to Change Your Life
DESCRIPTION:Recalling his own Holy Land pilgrimage experience\, Monsignor Peter Vaghi explores three significant events in the life of the early Church that can be traced back to the Upper Room in Jerusalem: the Last Supper and the institution of the Eucharist\, the post-resurrection appearances of Christ to his followers\, and the Holy Spirit descending on the apostles at Pentecost. In Meeting God in the Upper Room\, Monsignor Vaghi captures the various integral ways in which we continue in our day to meet the Risen Lord—in the sacraments; in our prayer lives; in our profession of Easter faith; in our works of charity and service; in our devotion to Mary\, Mother of the Church and our Mother; in the experience of the gifts of the Holy Spirit; in the call to evangelize and our efforts to evangelize in our own day—in our homes\, workplaces\, places of leisure\, in our travel. All of these make up the rich and continued spiritual legacy of that Upper Room and what happened there. \nBook signing to follow event. \nMonsignor Peter J. Vaghi\n \nMonsignor Peter J. Vaghi is pastor of the Church of the Little Flower in Bethesda\, Maryland\, and a priest of the Archdiocese of Washington. He received seminary and theological training at the Pontifical North American College and Gregorian University\, both in Rome. Msgr. Vaghi was designated “Prelate of Honor” by St. John Paul II in 1995\, and has served since 1987 as chaplain of the John Carroll Society\, a group of professional men and women in service of the Archbishop of Washington. He is the author of Encountering Jesus in Word\, Sacraments\, and Works of Charity as well as the Pillars of Faith series. He has also written articles for America\, Priest\, and Our Sunday Visitor and contributed to two collections of writings on priestly spirituality: Behold Your Mother and Born of the Eucharist. \n  \nReviews\n“Like many of you\, I always await Msgr. Vaghi’s next book…. Sure enough\, this one’s another winner\, as he takes us to where it all began\, the Upper Room\, the scene of the Last Supper and Pentecost. This work inspires the kind of meditation encouraged by St. Ignatius and his son\, Pope Francis\, as we prayerfully imagine ourselves in a biblical scene.” \n—Cardinal Timothy Michael Dolan\, archbishop of New York \n“Msgr. Peter Vaghi’s journey into ‘the most important room in Christendom’ is a journey into the heart of the Church and the heart of Jesus. Along the way\, Monsignor Vaghi offers practical wisdom for modern disciples. Meeting God in the Upper Room is contemporary spiritual writing at its finest.” \n—Matt Malone\, SJ\, editor-in-chief of America magazine \n“As each follower of Jesus recognizes the call to be an evangelizing disciple\, we take on the responsibility of renewing our faith\, of standing firm in the conviction of its truth and finally of sharing it. Msgr. Vaghi provides guidance and support for all three of those elements in the life of the Christian today who truly wants to take on the mission that came to life in the Upper Room. We should all be grateful to Monsignor Vaghi for offering us this opportunity to spiritually visit the Upper Room and draw strength and inspiration from our encounter with God in that sacred space.” \n—Cardinal Donald Wuerl\, archbishop of Washington\, D.C

SUMMARY:Sex Scandal: The Drive to Abolish Male and Female
DESCRIPTION:Men and women used to cheer: vive la différence! \nBut now\, contrary to all science and common sense\, we’re supposed to believe that there is no difference. (And if you insist there is\, you just might be accused of a hate crime!) Sex Scandal is packed with news-breaking interviews\, shocking examples\, and “inconvenient” facts that everyone needs to read—and act on.\n \n  \n  \n  \nIf you find yourself asking: \n•Why boys who think they’re girls (and who could change their minds tomorrow) should be allowed to participate in girls’ sports—and shower in their locker rooms \n•Why expectant mothers are now “birthing individuals” \n•Why coed college dorm rooms and bathrooms are great\, but single-sex clubs are a campus danger \n•Why our military should lower physical standards and push young women and mothers into combat roles in the military\n \nThen Ashely’s compelling new book\, Sex Scandal\, is for you. In it she takes these radical campaigns to task and reveals: \n•How so-called “gender-norming” flies in the face of science (which is proving that men and women are even more different than commonly acknowledged) \n•Why—especially if you have kids—it’s almost impossible to avoid the dangerous consequences of a “gender neutral” world \n•How embracing sexual differences can make policing safer\, government more efficient—and hedge funds lose less money \n•How “gender neutrality” is making women more vulnerable to violence \nReception and book signing to follow event. \n  \nAshley McGuire\nAshley McGuire is a senior fellow with The Catholic Association and a founding editor of altFem\, a web magazine devoted to the exploration of faith and gender. She writes and speaks widely about religious freedom\, Catholicism\, and women. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times\, Wall Street Journal\, Washington Post\, USA TODAY\, and TIME magazine among others. McGuire is a recipient of the Susan B. Anthony List’s Young Pro-Life Leader award. She lives in Washington\, D.C.\, with her husband and two children. \n  \n\nReviews\n“Human biology is under siege—at the workplace\, on the playing field\, in classrooms and bathrooms\, and even in our dictionaries! In this ground-breaking and meticulously researched book\, Ashley McGuire plunges into every front of the progressives’ war on the sexes. She rips the lid off the Left’s obliteration of the fundamental differences between men and women. She exposes the profound havoc militant feminists and gender-bending crusaders are causing in our schools and culture. Sex Scandal searingly documents how the radical pursuit of ‘gender neutrality’ threatens true equality for all. McGuire’s work is both an invaluable resource and a brave public service.”\n—Michelle Malkin\, New York Times bestselling author of Culture of Corruption and Unhinged: Exposing Liberals Gone Wild \n  \n“The ‘war on boys’ turned into a rout and we now live in an Orwellian society where everything about ‘sex’ and ‘gender’ is dictated to us by a group of powerful\, ideological bullies. Ashley McGuire documents where we are\, how it happened\, and what’s next in exacting—and harrowing—detail.”\n—Jonathan V. Last\, author of What to Expect When No One’s Expecting: America’s Coming Demographic Disaster and senior writer at the Weekly Standard \n  \n“In her important book Sex Scandal\, Ashley McGuire sounds the alarm on the destructive drive to eliminate sex differences. With devastating facts and figures she exposes the radical gender warriors who deny reality as the enemy of women’s true equality.”\n—Kate O’Beirne\, former Washington editor of National Review and author of Women Who Make the World Worse \n  \n“A masterful indictment of the Sexual Revolution and all its empty promises\, Sex Scandal establishes Ashley McGuire as a powerful new voice and leader in the rising counterculture. Stylishly written\, morally urgent\, and logically flawless\, this breakthrough book is essential reading for an age of delusion.”\n—Mary Eberstadt\, author of It’s Dangerous to Believe\, How the West Really Lost God\, and Adam and Eve after the Pill

SUMMARY:Cardinal Newman and the Oratory of St. Philip Neri
DESCRIPTION:Monsignor Andrew Wadsworth\, the moderator of the Oratorian community of St. Philip Neri here in Washington\, D.C.\, and the executive director of the International Commission on English in the Liturgy\, will visit the CIC on Feb. 9 after the noon Mass (approximately 12:50 p.m.) to discuss the Oratory of St. Philip Neri and its most distinguished son in the English-speaking world\, Blessed John Henry Newman (1801-1890). Monsignor Wadsworth will speak for about 30 minutes and then answer questions.\n\n\n\n  \nMany are familiar with Newman the writer\, the philosopher\, and the theologian\, but fewer are familiar with Newman the Oratorian. It was Newman who\, after completing a brief novitiate at the Roman Oratory in the Eternal City\, imported the Oratory and its distinct brand of spirituality to British soil. He established the Oratories in both Birmingham and London\, respectively\, and served as provost of the former until his death nearly half a century later.\n\n\n\n\n  \nIf you would like to learn more about Cardinal Newman\, please also consider joining the CIC Book Club on Thursdays after Mass (conference room\, 12:45 p.m.). The group is currently reading Father Stanley Jaki’s Apologetics as Meant by Newman.

SUMMARY:How I Stayed Catholic at Harvard with Aurora Griffin
DESCRIPTION:A Harvard graduate\, Rhodes Scholar\, and devout Catholic tells you everything you need to know about keeping your faith at a modern university. Drawing on her recent experience\, Aurora Griffin shares forty practical tips relating to academics\, community\, prayer\, and service that helped her stay Catholic in college. \nAurora Griffin reminds us that keeping the faith is a conscious decision\, reinforced by commitment to daily practices. Her story illustrates that when you decide your faith matters to you\, no one can take it away\, even in the most secular environments and under strong peer pressure. Throughout the book\, she shows how being Catholic in college did not prevent her from having a full “college experience\,” but actually enabled her to make the most of her time at Harvard. \nAurora encourages students who are about to begin this formative journey\, or those now in college\, that the most valuable parts of college life — lasting friendships\, intellectual growth\, and cherished memories — are experienced in a more meaningful way when lived in and through the Catholic faith.

SUMMARY:"What a Piece of Work is Man": Reflections on the Human Person (Part 3)
DESCRIPTION:Human at Heart\nSt. Thomas Aquinas on the Spiritual Life\nSt. Paul says that “the love of God has been poured forth into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us” (Rom. 5:5) This one passage announces two mysteries: the mystery of the human heart and the mystery of the grace of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. The purpose of this talk is to contemplate the mystery of the human heart in a deep but practical way so that we might live more fully by the grace of the Holy Spirit who dwells in our hearts. St. Thomas Aquinas will guide us through these mysteries. Although St. Thomas Aquinas is widely renown for his theological teaching\, few people think of him as a master of the spiritual life. He is even sometimes dismissed for being excessively theoretical or out of touch with the human heart. But in reality St. Thomas Aquinas was a master of the spiritual life. His teaching on the human heart is profound\, and abounds with many practical implications for the spiritual life. \nFr. James Brent\n \nFr. James Dominic Brent\, O.P. was born and raised in Michigan. He pursued his undergraduate and graduate studies in Philosophy\, and completed his doctorate in Philosophy at Saint Louis University on the epistemic status of Christian beliefs according to Saint Thomas Aquinas. He has articles in the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy on Natural Theology\, in the Oxford Handbook of Thomas Aquinas on “God’s Knowledge and Will”\, and an article forthcoming on “Thomas Aquinas” in the Oxford Handbook of the Epistemology of Theology. He earned his STB from the Dominican House of Studies in 2010\, and was ordained a priest in the same year. He taught in the School of Philosophy at The Catholic University of America from 2010- 2014\, and spent the year of 2014-2015 doing full time itinerant preaching on college campuses across the United States. He is currently on the faculty at the Dominican House of Studies\, where he teaches philosophy. \n  \nReception to follow event. \n  \nCo-Sponsored by: \n \n

SUMMARY:"What a Piece of Work is Man": Reflections on the Human Person (Part 2)
DESCRIPTION:Cultivating a Human Soul\nThe Pursuit of Virtue as the Pursuit of Truth\nDuring this second installment of a three part series reflecting on the human person\, Angela Knobel will explore the notion of virtue in terms of its relationship to the pursuit of truth. She will argue that to cultivate the virtues is to cultivate a certain kind of relationship between oneself and the world: a habitual ability to recognize and be guided by the truth. She will also address how this notion helps to illuminate what it would mean to possess each of the four cardinal virtues. \nAngela Knobel\nAngela Knobel is associate professor of philosophy at the Catholic University of America. Her main areas of research are Thomas Aquinas’s virtue theory\, ethics\, and bioethics\, and her papers have appeared or are forthcoming in such journals as The Thomist\, American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly\, Nova et Vetera\, International Philosophical Quarterly\, Christian Bioethics\, Studies in Christian Ethics\, and The Journal of Moral Theology. She is working on a book\, Aquinas and the Infused Moral Virtues. Professor Knobel has written numerous articles on the virtues\, character\, and the moral philosophy of Thomas Aquinas. She is also a project leader for the Beacon Project\, an interdisciplinary research project on ethics\, funded by the John Templeton Foundation. \n  \n  \nEvent followed by a reception. \nCo-Sponsored by: \n \n

SUMMARY:Great Catholic Parishes with William E. Simon Jr.
DESCRIPTION:What is really happening in the Catholic Church in North America? Are parishes thriving or dying? Is dissatisfaction among Catholics growing or are they becoming more engaged in the evangelizing mission of the Church? \nBusinessman\, professor\, and philanthropist\, William E. Simon Jr. has been highly influenced by the dynamic and inspiring Catholic parishes he has attended for more than 25 years. In 2012\, he founded Parish Catalyst\, an organization devoted to researching and supporting the health and development of Catholic parishes. Great Catholic Parishes looks at Simon’s insights and the success stories of 244 vibrant parishes to show what makes them great. \nIn 2012 and 2013\, Simon and his team studied 244 Catholic parishes to determine what made them exceptional. The study found that all of the parishes shared four foundational practices that led to a profound sense of belonging within their parish communities and a deepening commitment to discipleship: \n\nShare leadership by using clergy and lay staff with the best talents and skills to direct the community\nFoster spiritual maturity and plan for discipleship by offering a variety of formation programs and ministry opportunities to reach parishioners at differing points in their lives\nExcel on Sundays by dedicating significant time\, energy\, and money to liturgical celebrations that parishioners and visitors find welcoming\nIntentionally evangelize by challenging insiders to look outward and providing service programs\, social events\, global mission opportunities\, and pastoral care at key sacramental moments that focus on inviting outsiders to deeper relationship with Christ and the Church.\n\nIn Great Catholic Parishes\, Simon shares personal stories such as finding a welcoming parish home and what he learned about evangelizing from a mission trip to Kenya. Pastors from exceptional parishes offer helpful ideas\, strategic advice\, and practical strategies\, as well as anecdotes about lay ministry development initiatives and reworking religious education so that it is family focused and web-based. \nYou will also learn creative solutions to familiar challenges such as spiritual stagnation among parishioners\, reconciling diverse needs in the parish\, allowing the pastor to focus on pastoring and preaching\, and reaching youth and young adults who leave the Church in disproportionate numbers. \nEach chapter closes with either crucial takeaways or a summary of practical challenges that will help pastors and leaders focus on growth and excellence.

SUMMARY:Art and the Search for God
DESCRIPTION:A discussion on the stage adaptation of The Loser Letters\nCan art help us to discover whether it is easier to live a moral life with or without God? Join us for a discussion on the stage adaption of The Loser Letters\, with author Mary Eberstadt. \nA wickedly witty satire\, The Loser Letters chronicles the conversion of a young woman of Faith to Atheism…and beyond. \nBased on the novel by Mary Eberstadt\, and adapted for stage by Jeffrey Fiske (who also adapted today’s long-running version of The Screwtape Letters)\, The Loser Letters tells the tale of a sassy young addict named A.F. Christian. \nA.F.’s open letters to the leaders of the New Atheism explain her reasons for rejecting God. Along the way she offers sharp and acute advice to leading atheists in the hope of helping them win over more people of faith. But what about all those serious\, thoughtful people who are believers? \nIf the New Atheism is to make real headway\, she argues\, its advocates must do more to persuade the intelligent faithful to forsake God. A.F. is determined to help them do it — even if she is writing from an institution where all the attendants are identical\, the director might not be human\, and something called The Shadow constantly stalks our heroine. \nEchoing C.S. Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters and Dante’s Divine Comedy\, The Loser Letters uses humor and insight to take its protagonist through a full journey of changing faith and greater understanding. \nInformation on performances of The Loser Letters can be found here. There is a special discount on tickets for friends of the CIC. When you purchase your tickets for the show\, be sure to use the discount code: CICTLL

SUMMARY:It's Dangerous to Believe
DESCRIPTION:Religious liberty has become a hot button issue in the 2016 Republican primary races and is sure to carry over to the general election. For millions of Americans\, the so-called “first freedom” – religious freedom – is now a question mark as never before. In It’s Dangerous to Believe\, Mary Eberstadt provides a hard-hitting analysis of widespread attacks by unchecked secular activists on religious institutions and activities of all kinds – including but not limited to Christian schools\, colleges\, charities\, student organizations and clubs\, individual speakers and figureheads\, and more — and analyzes the dangers that runaway anti-religious animus is now inflicting on believers and society itself. \nPeople of faith are afraid. Afraid that they will lose their jobs\, their communities\, and their basic freedoms\, just because of their beliefs. They fear that religious universities and colleges will capitulate to the demands of secularism\, or retreat\, and be stripped to the bone. They fear that their children will be ostracized\, shunned\, and unable to keep or pass on their beliefs\, because the costs of professing traditional Christianity\, Judaism\, or any other faith will have become socially or financially prohibitive. They fear that they won’t be able to maintain operations that help the sick and feed the hungry. \nIs this what we want America to be? \nJournalist\, scholar and novelist Mary Eberstadt has been praised as “one of the most creative and acute social observers of our time” by Francis Fukuyama\, and as “intimidatingly intelligent” by George Will. With this book\, she takes an unflinching and powerfully argued position: that believers do not deserve the calumny and discrimination many now face; and that it’s up to reasonable people on all sides to empathize with people who are being wronged\, and to dissociate themselves from such injustices. Her book appeals to all men and women of good will to acknowledge that today’s intolerance towards Christians has already gone too far. It is also meant to spark second thoughts in the minds of the new anti-faith inquisitors by comparing their scorched-earth campaign against believers to the McCarthyite red scare of the 50s\, the Salem witch trials\, and other historical outbreaks of collectivist unreason. \nReligious belief — and religious believers — are being aggressively pushed out of public life by concerted secularist campaigns. As Eberstadt reveals in It’s Dangerous to Believe\, the new anti-religious intolerance is both wrong in itself\, and potentially disastrous for the well-being of America’s citizens and the nation’s future. Not until men and women outside religious precincts live up to their own stated standards of tolerance can America become the inclusive society that all people of reason should want her to be. \n \nMary Eberstadt\nMary Eberstadt is an essayist and author of several influential works of non-fiction\, including How the West Really Lost God: A New Theory of Secularization; Adam and Eve after the Pill: Paradoxes of the Sexual Revolution; and Home-Alone America. Her novel The Loser Letters: A Comic Tale of Life\, Death\, and Atheism\, has been adapted for stage and will premiere in fall 2016. She is also editor of the anthology Why I Turned Right: Leading Baby Boom Conservatives Chronicle Their Political Journeys. \nA frequent contributor to magazines and journals including TIME\, The Wall Street Journal\, National Review\, the Weekly Standard\, and First Things\, Mrs. Eberstadt (nee Tedeschi) has also served as an editor at Policy Review\, The Public Interest\, and The National Interest. Previous affiliations include the Hoover Institution and the Ethics and Public Policy Center. In 2011\, she founded a literary organization called the Kirkpatrick Society that mentored hundreds of women writers. \nDuring the Reagan administration\, Mrs. Eberstadt spent two years as a speechwriter to Secretary of State George Shultz. In 2014\, Seton Hall University awarded Mrs. Eberstadt an honorary doctorate in humane letters. She lives in the Washington\, DC area. \n

SUMMARY:Genocide Against Christians in the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:An Eyewitness Account with Fr. Douglas Bazi\n \nLiving his entire life in Iraq\, Fr. Douglas Bazi has seen his share of war. His church in Baghdad was bombed several times and in 2006 he was kidnapped and tortured for nine days by an Islamist terrorist group simply for being a Christian. He suffered two broken vertebrae in his back and his nose and teeth were smashed using a hammer.  In 2014\, Father Douglas founded a refugee center\, which now houses hundreds of Christians fleeing from persecution in ISIS-dominated regions of Iraq. The camp\, which is located in the predominately Christian Ankawa neighborhood of Erbil in the Kurdistan region of Iraq\, boasts prefabricated housing units\, a library\, and a strong emphasis on education.  Many parts of the world have declared the mass atrocities being carried out by ISIS as “genocide.” Fr. Bazi\, along with others\, lobbied the United States to follow suit. This past March\, the U.S. Secretary of State formally declared that ISIS has committed genocide against Christians and other religious groups.

SUMMARY:Red\, White\, Blue\, and Catholic
DESCRIPTION:The Church’s work of evangelization and her contribution to the good of society are inseparable. As Catholics and as American citizens\, we are called to do more than just vote\, and called to do more than just follow a party. \nAmerica needs Catholics who are in love with our nation\, and who act from the deepest convictions of their faith to make America the best version of herself. If we love God and our neighbor\, we dedicate ourselves to the vitality of our society. We respond to the needs of our neighbors. We confront both physical poverty and spiritual poverty. Most importantly\, we follow Christ. \nAs Stephen P. White says\, we need Catholic citizens who are Red\, White\, Blue and Catholic. Think of this book as a Catholic guide to faithful citizenship for the 364 days of the year that aren’t the first Tuesday in November. \n  \n  \n\nAbout the Author\n\n\n\nStephen P. White is a fellow in the Catholic Studies Program at the Ethics and Public Policy Center. His work focuses on the application of Catholic social teaching to contemporary political and cultural issues. His writing has appeared in outlets such as the National Review Online\,Huffington Post\, America Magazine\, and The Catholic Herald (UK). He is a regular contributor at CatholicVote.org. Since 2005\, he has been coordinator of an annual seminar on Catholic social thought in Krakow\, Poland. \n \n\n\n \n \n \n \n  \n\n \nCo-Sponsored by:

SUMMARY:Remembering God's Mercy with Dawn Eden
DESCRIPTION:Remembering God’s Mercy is a perfect resource for personal spiritual growth during the Jubilee Year of Mercy.\nJoin us for a book event with Dawn Eden!\n\nIn the first book to explore how memories impact and are affected by faith\, bestselling author Dawn Eden offers a guide to the process she used to heal the pain of her past. Through her own story\, as well as the examples of St. Ignatius of Loyola\, St. Peter Faber\, and Pope Francis\, she shows how the mercy of God\, who holds all of events of our life in his own memory\, can bring you healing and inner peace. \nDawn Eden’s My Peace I Give You helped thousands find peace after abuse and established her as the leading Catholic authority on recovering from traumatic stress. In Remembering God’s Mercy\, Eden—who suffered childhood sexual abuse that left her with PTSD—describes how she was inspired by the example of Pope Francis\, St. Ignatius\, and St. Peter Faber\, all of whom suffered from their own painful experiences and followed a similar path to healing. \nPope Francis has spoken openly about how a life-threatening bout of pneumonia affected his relationship with God\, saying that recognizing and accepting the power of memories to color perceptions is essential to seeing God in all things and experiencing inner peace. The pope was influenced by the examples of Ignatius and Faber. Ignatius suffered the loss of his mother at a young age and was sent by his father to live with another family. He also fought as a mercenary soldier as a young man and experienced the trauma of war and physical pain. Faber\, a student of Ignatius and among the early members of the Society of Jesus\, suffered from bouts of depression and anxiety for years. He wrote in his diary how he applied Ignatius’s spiritual practices in a way that enabled him to rise above his mental suffering to grow closer with God. \nThrough the wisdom of these three Jesuits\, Eden developed an Ignatian model of healing: \n\nAcknowledge your memories.\nAccept that they change the way you see God\, your fate\, and other people.\nAllow God to transform your memories by coloring the past and present with his story of salvation.\n\nEden examines how Jesus’ wounds can bring healing to your own hurt through prayer\, Mass\, the Sacraments (particularly confession)\, and the life of the Church. In each chapter\, she will engage you with specific steps to take using the most famous Ignatian prayer\, the Suscipe—Latin for “receive”—to transform your past traumas into an offering to God that is united with Jesus’ own self-offering. \n\nAbout Dawn Eden:\n\n\nDawn Eden is the author of Remembering God’s Mercy: Redeem the Past and Free Yourself from Painful Memories\, The Thrill of the Chaste\, and My Peace I Give You: Healing Sexual Wounds with the Help of the Saints. \nBorn into a Jewish family in New York City\, Eden lost her faith as a teenager and became an agnostic. During her twenties\, in the 1990s\, she worked as a rock journalist in New York City\, interviewing oldies artists such as Brian Wilson and Harry Nilsson. She went on to work in editorial positions for the New York Post and the Daily News. \nAt the age of thirty-one\, Eden underwent a dramatic conversion to Christianity that ultimately led her to enter the Catholic Church. Both her books have been featured in the New York Times\, L’Osservatore Romano\, and on numerous EWTN programs\, and they have been translated into multiple languages\, including Spanish. \nEden received her pontifical licentiate in sacred theology from the Dominican House of Studies in 2014 and is currently completing a doctorate at the University of St. Mary of the Lake. She has spoken about spiritual healing and conversion to thousands of people throughout North America and abroad.

SUMMARY:"To the Martyrs" with Cardinal Wuerl
DESCRIPTION:Please join Cardinal Donald Wuerl for a book signing and discussion of Christian persecution. Books will be available for purchase. \nAbout the Book\nChristian persecution is so widespread that Pope Francis has called it a “third world war\, waged piecemeal\, a form of genocide.” Cardinal Donald Wuerl raises awareness and urges solidarity with suffering Christians in his latest work\, To the Martyrs: A Reflection on the Supreme Christian Witness. “Martyrdom may be constant\, and it may be inevitable\,” His Eminence writes\, “but that does not mean we should allow it to take place without consequence.” \nIn To the Martyrs\, Cardinal Wuerl recounts the experience of martyrdom in the life of the Church\, from the apostolic age to today. Through various periods of persecution throughout the world\, one thing remains the same: “Martyrdom is the most vivid and credible summary of the Gospel.” To the Martyrs challenges all Christians to courageously emulate the steadfast commitment of those who have followed Christ—even unto death. \n\n \nAbout the Author\nHis Eminence Cardinal Donald Wuerl is the Archbishop of Washington\, DC. He serves on numerous Vatican Congregations and Pontifical Councils including the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and on various committees of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. During his decades-long ministry as a priest\, bishop\, and cardinal\, His Eminence has had the privilege of working with refugees and other Christians who suffer religious persecution.  Among his many books an early one was entitled\, “The Forty English Martyrs”.\n \n
