SUMMARY:Catholicism in the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION: Fr. White will talk about his new book on Catholicism and the challenges and promise of Catholicism in the 21st century\, followed by comments and conversation with Mary Eberstadt and Robert Royal. \nThe Light of Christ provides an accessible presentation of Catholicism that is grounded in traditional theology\, but engaged with a host of contemporary questions or objections. Inspired by the theologies of Irenaeus\, Thomas Aquinas and John Henry Newman\, and rooted in a post-Vatican II context\, Fr. Thomas Joseph White presents major doctrines of the Christian religion in a way that is comprehensible for non-specialists: knowledge of God\, the mystery of the Trinity\, the Incarnation and the atonement\, the sacraments and the moral life\, eschatology and prayer. \nAt the same time\, The Light of Christ also addresses topics such as evolution\, the modern historical study of Jesus and the Bible\, and objections to Catholic moral teaching. Touching on the concerns of contemporary readers\, Fr. White examines questions such as whether Christianity is compatible with the findings of the modern sciences\, do historical Jesus studies disrupt or confirm the teaching of the faith\, and does history confirm the antiquity of Catholic claims. \nThis book serves as an excellent introduction for young professionals with no specialized background in theology who are interested in learning more about Catholicism\, or as an introduction to Catholic theology. It will also serve as a helpful text for theology courses in a university context. \nAs Fr. White states in the book’s introduction: “This is a book that offers itself as a companion. I do not presume to argue the reader into the truths of the Catholic faith\, though I will make arguments. My goal is to make explicit in a few broad strokes the shape of Catholicism. I hope to outline its inherent intelligibility or form as a mystery that is at once visible and invisible\, ancient and contemporary\, mystical and reasonable.” \n\nAbout the Speakers:\nFr. Thomas Joseph White is the author of Wisdom in the Face of Modernity: A Study in Thomistic Natural Theology (Sapientia Press\, 2009)\, The Incarnate Lord: A Thomistic Study in Christology (The Catholic University of America Press\, 2015)\, and Exodus (Brazos Press\, 2016). He has edited several books\, and is co-editor of the theological journal Nova et Vetera (English edition). In 2011 he was appointed an ordinary member of the Pontifical Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas. Fr. White is currently a participating scholar in the project Virtue\, Happiness\, & the Meaning of Life sponsored by the John Templeton Foundation. \nMore information about Fr. White’s publications can be found on his academia.edu profile. \n  \n \nMary Eberstadt is an essayist and author of several influential works of non-fiction\, including How the West Really Lost God: A New Theory of Secularization; Adam and Eve after the Pill: Paradoxes of the Sexual Revolution; and Home-Alone America. Her novel The Loser Letters: A Comic Tale of Life\, Death\, and Atheism\, has been adapted for stage and will premiere in fall 2016. She is also editor of the anthology Why I Turned Right: Leading Baby Boom Conservatives Chronicle Their Political Journeys. \nA frequent contributor to magazines and journals including TIME\, The Wall Street Journal\, National Review\, the Weekly Standard\, and First Things\, Mrs. Eberstadt (nee Tedeschi) has also served as an editor at Policy Review\, The Public Interest\, and The National Interest. Previous affiliations include the Hoover Institution and the Ethics and Public Policy Center. In 2011\, she founded a literary organization called the Kirkpatrick Society that mentored hundreds of women writers. \nDuring the Reagan administration\, Mrs. Eberstadt spent two years as a speechwriter to Secretary of State George Shultz. In 2014\, Seton Hall University awarded Mrs. Eberstadt an honorary doctorate in humane letters. She lives in the Washington\, DC area. \n  \nRobert Royal is the founder and president of the Faith & Reason Institute in Washington\, D.C. and editor-in-chief of The Catholic Thing (www.thecatholicthing.org)  His books include: 1492 And All That: Political Manipulations of History (1992)\, Reinventing the American People: Unity and Diversity Today (1995)\, The Virgin and the Dynamo: The Use and Abuse of Religion in the Environment Debate(1999\, Eerdmans)\, Dante Alighieri in the Spiritual Legacy Series (1999\, Crossroad)\, and The Catholic Martyrs of the Twentieth Century: A Comprehensive Global History (2000\, Crossroad)\, The Pope’s Army (2006\, Crossroad)\, and The God That Did Not Fail (2006\, Encounter). Dr. Royal holds a B.A. and M.A. from Brown University and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the Catholic University of America. He has taught at Brown University\, Rhode Island College\, and The Catholic University of America. He received fellowships to study in Italy from the Renaissance Society of America (1977) and as a Fulbright scholar (1978). SUMMARY:Why I Don't Call Myself Gay
DESCRIPTION:Daniel C. Mattson\, author of the new book “Why I Don’t Call Myself Gay: How I Reclaimed My Sexual Reality and Found Peace” will discuss his personal journey to and from a gay identity and detail the importance for the Church to have a prophetic role in the world in reclaiming sexual reality.  \nHis talk will focus on the lessons he’s learned as a Prodigal Son who has returned home to his Father’s house\, as well as the importance for the Church to have a prophetic role in the world in reclaiming sexual reality. A key focus of Mattson’s book and his work is that the words we use matter. Mattson will discuss why he believes that the current lexicon of LGBTQIA sexual identities does injury both to God and man and reflect an abuse of language\, designed to undermine the creative wisdom of God. In a religion rooted in the Logos\, the Word made flesh\, Mattson believes we must reflect the nature of created reality in the words we use. For Mattson\, this means the only words that are objectively true–and therefore helpful–are the Words Christ said while he walked among us\, incarnate as a man\, “Have you not read that the one who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female?'” \nBook signing and reception to follow event. \n  \n\nAbout the Author: \nDaniel C. Mattson is a writer and a public speaker who proclaims the Good News of the Catholic Church’s teaching on homosexuality. His story is told in the award-winning documentary Desire of the Everlasting Hills\, produced by the Courage Apostolate (everlastinghills.org) His writing has appeared in Communio\, First Things\, The National Catholic Register\, andCrisis Magazine\, among others. He is a frequent guest on Catholic radio and has appeared several times on EWTN. A professional orchestral trombone player\, Mattson has performed and presented master classes around the world\, including at the famed St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia. \n  \n\nReviews: \n“I encourage many to read the following testimonial\, which… bears witness to the mercy and goodness of God\, to the efficacy of his grace\, and to the veracity of the teachings of his Church.”\n— Cardinal Robert Sarah\, from the Foreword; Author\, God or Nothing \n“Daniel Mattson has written an honest account of the genuine struggles faced by those with same-sex attraction. Drawing upon a wealth of spiritual insights and wisdom from across our deep Catholic tradition\, he shares with us how he has come to understand and accept God’s loving plan for his life\, as well as the beauty and richness of the Church’s teachings on chastity. The tenderness and mercy of God is evident throughout and is a powerful reminder for all of us!”\n— Cardinal Timothy Dolan\, Archbishop of New York \n“This powerful book reminds us that we need to accompany our brothers and sisters in their struggles with compassion and love\, patience and understanding. I pray that this book will help many to discover God’s love and to find happiness in following Jesus Christ and his beautiful plan for creation and our lives.”\n—Most Reverend José H. Gomez\, Archbishop of Los Angeles \n“Dan Mattson is a profile in courage.  This profoundly moving story of his experience of same sex attraction and his reflections on the hard-won truth that those attractions do not define him mark a way forward for others.  I highly recommend this memoir to pastoral ministers accompanying our brothers and sisters in similar circumstances.”\n— Cardinal Seán P. O’Malley\, GCIH OFM Cap.\, Archbishop of Boston

SUMMARY:Finding God in the Modern World (Part 1)
DESCRIPTION:Large and Startling Figures\nFlannery O’Connor’s Postmodern Apologetic\nwith Dr. Frederick C. Bauerschmidt\nWriting to a friend in the mid-1950s\, the American fiction writer Flannery O’Connor noted that we live in an age in which “the moral sense has been bred out of certain sections of the population\, like the wings have been bred off certain chickens to produce more white meat on them….This is a Generation of wingless chickens\, which I suppose is what Nietzsche meant when he said God was dead.” In such a situation\, she felt\, subtlety could not work: “you have to make your vision apparent by shock—to the hard of hearing you shout\, and for the almost blind you draw large and startling figures.” Dr. Bauerschmidt will explore how\, through her fiction\, O’Conner presented her Catholic vision by means of grotesque and often shockingly violent tales in which the absolute demands of belief clash with postmodern indifference\, attempting to open jaded modern readers to the possibility of transcendent truth. \nPart Two–“Saved in Hope: The Christian Vision of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis” with Philip Zaleski\nPart Three–“The Drama of Grace: Sigrid Undset and the Narrative of Conversion” with Fr. Raymund Snyder\, OP \n\nDr. Frederick C. Bauerschmidt is Professor of Theology at Loyola University Maryland and a deacon of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. He has published book on the theology of Thomas Aquinas and the Christian mystical tradition\, as well as numerous articles on Catholic life and thought. \n  \n  \n  \nCo-Sponsored by:

SUMMARY:Debating Religious Liberty and Discrimination
DESCRIPTION:Virtually everyone supports religious liberty\, and virtually everyone opposes discrimination. But how do we handle the hard questions that arise when exercises of religious liberty seem to discriminate unjustly? How do we promote the common good while respecting conscience in a diverse society?\n \nThis point-counterpoint book brings together leading voices in the culture wars to debate such questions: John Corvino\, a longtime LGBT-rights advocate\, opposite Ryan T. Anderson and Sherif Girgis\, prominent young social conservatives. \nMany such questions have arisen in response to same-sex marriage: How should we treat county clerks who do not wish to authorize such marriages\, for example; or bakers\, florists\, and photographers who do not wish to provide same-sex wedding services? But the conflicts extend well beyond the LGBT rights arena. How should we treat hospitals\, schools\, and adoption agencies that can’t in conscience follow antidiscrimination laws\, healthcare mandates\, and other regulations? Should corporations ever get exemptions? Should public officials? \nShould we keep controversial laws like the Religious Freedom Restoration Act\, or pass new ones like the First Amendment Defense Act? Should the law give religion and conscience special protection at all\, and if so\, why? What counts as discrimination\, and when is it unjust? What kinds of material and dignitary harms should the law try to fight-and what is dignitary harm\, anyway? \nBeyond the law\, how should we treat religious beliefs and practices we find mistaken or even oppressive? Should we tolerate them or actively discourage them? \nIn point-counterpoint format\, Corvino\, Anderson and Girgis explore these questions and more. Although their differences run deep\, they tackle them with civility\, clarity\, and flair. Their debate is an essential contribution to contemporary discussions about why religious liberty matters and what respecting it requires. \nBook signing and reception to follow event. \n  \n  \nAbout the Speakers\nRyan T. Anderson is the William E. Simon Senior Research Fellow in American Principles and Public Policy at the Heritage Foundation\, and the Founder and Editor of Public Discourse: Ethics\, Law\, and the Common Good\, the online journal of the Witherspoon Institute in Princeton\, NJ. A Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude graduate of Princeton University\, he earned his Ph.D. in political philosophy from the University of Notre Dame. Anderson’s research has been cited by two U.S. Supreme Court justices in two Supreme Court cases. \nHis writings have appeared in the New York Times\, the Washington Post\, the Wall Street Journal\, the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy\, the Harvard Health Policy Review\, the Weekly Standard\, and National Review. Anderson has appeared on ABC\, CNN\, CNBC\, MSNBC\, and the Fox News Channel. In addition to a memorable 2013 debate about marriage on CNN’s Piers Morgan Live\, his news interviews include appearances on ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos\, CNN’s New Day with Chris Cuomo\, MSNBC’s The Ed Show with Ed Schultz\, and Fox News’ Hannity. \nSherif Girgis is a research scholar at the Witherspoon Institute. He is coauthor of the book “What Is Marriage? Man and Woman: A Defense” (Encounter Books\, 2012)\, and of “Debating Religious Liberty and Discrimination” (Oxford University Press\, 2017). He earned his A.B. at Princeton University\, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude. After earning a master’s degree at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar\, and a law degree from Yale\, where he was an editor of the Yale Law Journal\, Girgis returned to Princeton to do a Ph.D. in philosophy\, where he is currently completing his dissertation. Sherif has written on social issues in academic and popular venues\, including Public Discourse\, National Review\, Commonweal\, the New York Times\, the Yale Law Journal\, the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy\, and the Wall Street Journal\, and has spoken at more than 80 lectures\, conferences\, and debates\, both popular and academic. \nReviews\n“In our deeply divided nation\, Debating Religious Liberty and Discrimination is a refreshing and hope-inspiring book. Provocative\, clear\, careful in argument\, searching in coverage\, it shows that people who strongly disagree can both find much common ground and also articulate their differences with respect and care\, fostering a community of reason. It will be a wonderful book for undergraduate teaching\, but it is also challenging for people well-versed in the subject\, whether they agree or disagree.” — Martha C. Nussbaum\, School of Law and Department of Philosophy\, The University of Chicago \n“One of the most important debates in our time is that it of religious liberty as it relates to controversies over sexuality and marriage. Sadly\, usually most Americans don’t have these debates at all\, content to stay in our silos and never engage with those who disagree with us. This book is different. Ryan Anderson\, Sherif Girgis\, and John Corvino model how to hold strong (very strong) opinions while debating others with respect. This book will equip you\, wherever you stand\, on how the “other side” from you thinks. If American society follows the lead of this book\, our culture wars won’t end\, but they just might be kinder and smarter. That’s a good start.” — Russell Moore\, President\, Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention

SUMMARY:Taking Beauty Seriously
DESCRIPTION:“In our contemporary western culture of repudiation and disenchantment\, there is much need for a witness to hope in the form of beauty\, a truth born of faith and love.” -Dony Mac Manus \nContemporary liturgical artist Dony Mac Manus\, sculpture of the four  bronze statues that reside in the Catholic Information Center’s Chapel\, will join us to discuss the spiritual wounds of our society and to propose the soothing balm of faith–and the beauty it produces as its remedy. \n  \n  \nAbout the Artist\nBorn in Dublin in 1971\, Dony Mac Manus graduated with a Bachelor of Design (1995) and a Higher Diploma in Art and Design Teaching (1998) at the National College of Art and Design\, Dublin\, Ireland. The work from his degree show was selected by the National Museum of Ireland for permanent display to launch the contemporary silver collection. He went on to receive a $20\,000 Millennium Scholarship Trust from the Bank of Ireland to study a Masters in Fine Art (2001) at the New York Academy of Art and also won a $8\,000 Scholarship from the same NYAA to use a studio in Provence in the south of France. \nShortly after September 11\, 2001 he left Manhattan for Italy where he set up his studio first in Rome for a year and a half and then Florence for the next year and a half while working on large bronze figurative compositions for NYC and Washington DC. He returned to Dublin in 2004 to establish the Irish Academy of Figurative Art over three and a half years which he then  entrusted to the remaining faculty and over 100 students. In late 2007 Mac Manus returned to Florence to develop a sacred art studio in the Monastery of San Marco where Beato Fra Angelico used to work and live (pictured above). While there he travelled to Rome once a fortnight to gain a Masters in Architecture\, Art and Liturgy (2010) under l’Universita degli Studi Europea di Roma at the the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum. His studio was so successful that the Archbishop of Florence\, Giuseppe Cardinal Betori asked Mac Manus during a visit to his studio to personally found a diocesan Sacred Art School – Firenze based on his studio practise\, which started in 2011 (www.donymacmanusstudios.com). The artist left Florence in 2014 to develop Sacred Art Studios to work on large liturgical art commissions and has been working from his studio in Dublin since then.

SUMMARY:That Nothing May Be Lost: Reflections on Catholic Doctrine and Devotion
DESCRIPTION:Fr. Paul Scalia reveals a scholar’s mind and a pastor’s heart in these inspiring reflections on a wide range of Catholic teachings and practices. Rooted in Scripture\, the beauty and truth of these insights places the reader on a path to a deeper\, more meaningful relationship with God. \nThese ponderings are coupled with powerful and moving introductory essays penned by highly regarded Catholics\, each offering a glimpse into the Catholic faith realized. Rev. Paul Check\, Jim Towey\, Dr. Scott Hahn\, Mary Ellen Bork\, Gloria Purvis\, Raymond Arroyo\, Lizz Lovett and Helen Alvare each open a section of the book with a personal account of his or her interaction with the faith. Fr. Scalia’s writings then offer insight into developing and growing one’s faith and relationship with God. Additionally\, Archbishop Charles Chaput offers a thought provoking foreword to help the reader with a meaningful journey through the many aspects of the Catholic faith presented throughout this book. \n  \n  \n\nAbout the Author\nFather Paul Scalia is a native of Virginia and grew up in the Diocese of Arlington. He attended the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester\, Massachusetts. He studied theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome. Ordained in 1996\, Fr. Scalia was appointed the Bishop’s Delegate for Clergy in 2012. He has written for various publications\, served as a frequent contributor to the Arlington Catholic Herald and Encourage and Teach\, the diocesan blog. \n  \n  \n\nReviews\n“Fr. Scalia has written a book that deepens our faith and leads us closer to God in a hundred different ways.”\n–Most Reverend Charles Chaput\, Archbishop of Philadelphia\, from the Foreword \n“Fr. Scalia has a unique gift of taking stories from Scripture that we’ve heard many times and casting them into a whole new light. In this book he opens up Catholic teaching in fresh and sometimes surprising directions that will change the way you think about your faith.”\n–Carrie Gress\, Author\, Nudging Conversations \n“It is the great joy of a priest to see the two people he loves most\, the Lord Jesus and whichever person he is caring for at that moment\, in each other’s arms. It is my hope that the many reflections Fr. Scalia offers us in these pages will bring us all into the arms of the only One who can ultimately satisfy.”\n–Fr. SUMMARY:The Marian Option: God’s Solution to a Civilization in Crisis
DESCRIPTION:As the world descends into chaos\, Christians are thinking deeply about how to stem the tide. Many options and suggestions have been presented to deal with Christian persecution and cultural decadence\, but none can hold a candle to The Marian Option. \nDr. Carrie Gress provides a thoroughly researched bird’s eye view of the significant cultural and military events mediated through Mary on behalf of her spiritual children. From miraculous victories to the soaring heights of culture\, you have never seen Mary like this before. \nUntil now\, books on the Virgin Mary have generally focused upon one apparition or various theological elements of this mysterious woman. But the scope of The Marian Option is far greater. Drawing from a vast array of dogmas\, Vatican approved apparitions\, and writings of the saints\, Dr. Gress has pulled together the remarkable story of Mary’s overwhelming influence and intercession. \nThe Marian Option will leave you with a new perspective on the Blessed Mother and a renewed hope in the future of the Church and the world. \n  \nReviews\n\n“The Marian Option offers a brilliant treatment on why the Virgin Mary – the mother of Jesus and our spiritual mother – must be at the heart of any Christian effort to renew society. Providing powerful historical witnesses\, concrete examples\, and practical cultural remedies\, Carrie Gress masterfully describes how in ages past it was only through the maternal intercession of the Queen of Heaven that fervent Catholic resurgences took place\, and why our modern age must learn from this and once again turn to Mary. This book is compelling and convincing!” \n— Fr. Donald Calloway\, MIC\, Author\, Champions of the Rosary: The History and Heroes of a Spiritual Weapon \n\n\n“This book is provocative in its simplicity. Looking closely at the recent conversations surrounding the so-called ‘Benedict Option\,’ Carrie Gress uncovers something more fundamental to living a full\, Christian life: the Marian Option. The call to personal holiness – given by Christ Himself – has no better exemplar over the centuries than our own Mother\, Mary. St. Benedict would agree! And so would\, I strongly suspect\, those attracted to the Benedict Option. Marian devotion\, lived through a deep devotion to Our Lady and a life of simple holiness changes the world\, because it changes us.” \n— Chris Stefanick\, Reallifecatholic.com

SUMMARY:A Pope and A President
DESCRIPTION:A Singular Bond That Changed History \nEven as historians credit Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II with hastening the end of the Cold War\, they have failed to recognize the depth or significance of the bond that developed between the two leaders. \nAcclaimed scholar and bestselling author Paul Kengor changes that. In this fascinating book\, he reveals a singular bond—which included a spiritual connection between the Catholic pope and the Protestant president—that drove the two men to confront what they knew to be the great evil of the twentieth century: Soviet communism. \nReagan and John Paul II almost didn’t have the opportunity to forge this relationship: just six weeks apart in the spring of 1981\, they took bullets from would-be assassins. But their strikingly similar near-death experiences brought them close together—to Moscow’s dismay. \nA Pope and a President is the product of years of research. Based on Kengor’s tireless archival digging and his unique access to Reagan insiders\, the book reveals: \n\nThe inside story on the 1982 meeting where the president and the pope confided their conviction that God had spared their lives for the purpose of defeating communism.\nCaptivating new information on the attempt on John Paul II’s life\, including a previously unreported secret CIA investigation—was Moscow behind the plot?\nThe many similarities and the spiritual bond between the pope and the president—and how Reagan privately spoke of the “DP”: the Divine Plan to take down communism.\nNew details about how the Protestant Reagan became intensely interested in the “secrets of Fátima\,” which date to the reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary at Fátima\, Portugal\, starting on May 13\, 1917—sixty-four years to the day before John Paul II was shot.\nA startling insider account of how the USSR may have been set to invade the pope’s native Poland in March 1981—only to pull back when news broke that Reagan had been shot\n\nNancy Reagan called John Paul II her husband’s “closest friend”; Reagan himself told Polish visitors that the pope was his “best friend.” When you read this book\, you will understand why. As kindred spirits\, Ronald Reagan and John Paul II united in pursuit of a supreme objective—and in doing so they changed history. \n  \n  \nAbout the Author\nPaul Kengor\, PhD\, is the New York Times bestselling author of God and Ronald Reagan\, The Crusader: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism\, 11 Principles of a Reagan Conservative\, Dupes\, The Communist\, and other books. A professor of political science and the executive director of the Center for Vision and Values at Grove City College\, he has written for a range of popular and scholarly publications\, including the New York Times\, the Wall Street Journal\, the Washington Post\, National Review\, Political Science Quarterly\, Christianity Today\, the National Catholic Register\, and the National Catholic Reporter. Kengor has appeared on Fox News\, MSNBC\, NPR\, C-SPAN\, and many other outlets. He and his family live in Pennsylvania. \n  \nReviews\n“No Reagan biographer or scholar knows Ronald Reagan and conservatism like Paul Kengor.” —Michael Reagan \n“[Kengor] has written the most exhaustive and definitive account of Communism’s twentieth-century assault on America to date.” —Townhall \n“Mr. Kengor’s research is prodigious\, his analysis keen and insightful\, his writing clear\, and his work distinguished. His command of the Reagan legacy is incomparable.” \n—Tony Dolan\, chief speechwriter and special assistant to President Reagan \n“Kengor makes clear just how central the defeat of the Soviet Union was to Reagan’s personal project.” —National Review \n“Combines great story-telling with his commitment to scholarly detail.” —Peter Schweizer\, bestselling author of Reagan’s War \n“[Kengor provides] more fascinating and never-before-reported details about how Ronald Reagan succeeded than any other Cold War historian. . . . Kengor somehow got his hands on more secret documents than the KGB.” —American Thinker \n“Kengor has unearthed eye-popping new information that left me amazed.” —Fred Barnes\, Weekly Standard \n“Provides authoritative insight into Reagan’s campaign to destroy Soviet Communism.” —Richard Pipes\, professor of history\, emeritus\, Harvard University

SUMMARY:Littlest Suffering Souls: Children Whose Short Lives Point Us to Christ
DESCRIPTION:Be inspired by faithful heroism of the littlest souls. \nAustin Ruse discusses his new book\, “Littlest Suffering Souls” and the lessons learned from these children’s remarkable lives. \nIt is said that children learn what they live. But children also teach the adults in their lives lessons on subjects such as unconditional love\, self-sacrifice\, self-forgetfulness\, patience and more. The ordinary way an adult learns these things from his or her children is by caring for them. \n Every parent knows that. But some extraordinary children seem sent by God to teach us about the “big questions” such as life\, death\, suffering\, and the existence of God. The children in this book\, all of whom suffered terribly during their short lives\, bore witness to God’s love and an understanding of the meaning of suffering and “what to do with it” that belied their years. And their teaching was not limited to their immediate family: Everyone with whom they came into contact\, from doctors and nurses\, to major political figures and popes to family friends and other children\, was profoundly affected by the encounter. \nThis book will make you cry\, yes\, but the tears will be mixed with something akin to joy at the beauty of the short lives of Brendan\, Margaret\, and Audrey\, and awe at the grace and dignity with which they bore their crosses\, lived and enjoyed this life\, and ultimately left it to be with the God they all loved. In this time in which there is so much despair and sadness\, and in this world in which we are so frequently reminded that it can truly be a “vale of tears\,” let the Littlest Suffering Souls remind you that this present life is not all there is; let the Littlest Suffering Souls point you to heaven and to Christ. \n  \nAbout the Author\nAustin Ruse is president of C-Fam\, a New York and Washington DC-based research institute working exclusively on international life and family issues. Austin has traveled around the world to lecture on UN matters. He was a founding columnist at TheCatholicThing.com and is currently a bi-weekly columnist at Crisis Magazine. He is a Knight of Magistral Grace in the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and a Knight in the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher. Austin lives with his wife Cathy and daughters Lucy and Gianna-Marie in Fairfax County\, Virginia\, where his ancestors settled from England before the Revolutionary War. \n

SUMMARY:#StandTogether: Raising the Voice of Christians who are Persecuted
DESCRIPTION:Antonio Olivié\, cofounder of #StandTogether\, Giulia Nembrini\, and Brian Grim join the CIC to discuss the digital platform created to give voice to Christians who are discriminated or persecuted\, especially in the Middle East. \n  \nThis project is the result of the collaboration between institutions devoted to fostering a culture of dialogue and peace\, by spreading the testimony of religious minorities\, Christian and others\, who live in dire circumstances. \n#StandTogether does not wish to create a new reality or replace the existing initiatives devoted to this issue. Rather\, their goal is to offer a common area for media and institutions to share their projects and to increase their potential audience exponentially. \nThe guiding idea behind this project is that the range of a message increases if people work together. That is why the following institutions are collaborating in this project: Communion and Liberation\, Amici Rome Reports\, Fundación Promoción Social de la Cultura\, and ISCOM\, who were the initiators of the project. \nThis event is related to the ‘Responding to the Global Persecution of Christians’ symposium hosted by the Under Caesar’s Sword project and its primary partners\, the Religious Freedom Institute and the Center for Ethics and Culture at the University of Notre Dame. Learn more about this symposium here. \n  \nAbout the Speakers:\nAntonio Olivié\n Antonio Olivié is CEO of Rome Reports TV and cofounder of #StandTogether\, an ecumenical and international project in support of Christians that are persecuted or discriminated against. He was spokesperson for the Health Department of the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha\, in Spain\, and deputy editor of the national newspaper Qué! Among other journalist activities. \n\n\nGiulia Nembrini\n \nGiulia Nembrini works on the #StandTogether Project for the International Center of Communion and Liberation\, one of the promoters of the initiative.  After graduating in International Relations at the Catholic University in Milan\, she got professional and academic experiences in the United States (United Nations)\, Israel and Brazil. \n\n\n  \nBrian Grim\nBrian J. Grim\, Ph. D.\, is the founder and president of the Annapolis\, Maryland-based Religious Freedom & Business Foundation\, and a leading expert on international religious demography and the socio-economic impact of restrictions on religious freedom. Brian’s recent widely covered research finds that religion contributed $1.2 trillion to the U.S. economy annually\, 50% more than America’s six largest oil companies\, and has a higher value than the combined revenues of the top 10 technology companies in the US\, including Apple\, Amazon and Google.\n\n\n\n\nLearn more \n  \nThis event is co-sponsored by\n\n

SUMMARY:Strangers in a Strange Land: Living the Catholic Faith in a Post-Christian World
DESCRIPTION:Archbishop Charles J. Chaput gives a bold critique of today’s America in his new book\, “Strangers in a Strange Land: Living the Catholic Faith in a Post-Christian World. Alongside a panel\, the Archbishop will provide a provocative look at the post-Christian public square and the gradual erosion of the religious faith and freedom that have marked it for so long. \nAt the same time\, Archbishop Charles J. Chaput will offer prophetic\, empowering guidance on how Christians—and especially Catholics—can successfully overcome these challenges and not merely survive but reclaim the joy\, the beauty\, and the grandeur of life in the world. \n\nReviews\n“At a time when many American Christians feel like ‘Strangers in a Strange Land\,’ one of the country’s most courageous and respected prelates has given us much needed words of wisdom for the challenges ahead. This forward-looking guidebook should be on every Catholic’s bookshelf.”—MARY ANN GLENDON\, Former U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See and Learned Hand Professor of Law at Harvard University \n“Archbishop Charles Chaput is the intellectual successor to Francis Cardinal George within the college of American bishops\, and his latest book — smart\, incisive\, crisply-written\, witty\, and inspiring — shows why. I would warmly recommend this text to anyone interested in the play between faith and culture.”—MOST REVEREND ROBERT BARRON\, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith \n“Pivotal and insightful\, unsettling but hopeful\, this book captures many of the challenges of following Jesus Christ at a time when his way\, truth and life are obscured or deemed unattractive by modern forces. Like a physician who understands not only the pandemic but its cure\, Chaput offers concrete ways Christians can heal and be healed by loving Christ and being a witness of his love in a troubled world.”—CARL A. ANDERSON\, Supreme Knight\, Knights of Columbus and author of A Civilization of Love \n“Archbishop Chaput’s compelling book makes clear that the struggle for Church freedom is not just about our legal rights\, but is ‘a much greater effort to defend the truth of the human being\, and to speak the truth about what our present sexual and social revolution portends.’ He offers both a clear diagnosis of our country’s challenges and a powerful inspiration for Catholics to follow the path to the City of God.”—WILLIAM MUMMA\, President of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty \n

SUMMARY:Meeting God in the Upper Room: Three Moments to Change Your Life
DESCRIPTION:Recalling his own Holy Land pilgrimage experience\, Monsignor Peter Vaghi explores three significant events in the life of the early Church that can be traced back to the Upper Room in Jerusalem: the Last Supper and the institution of the Eucharist\, the post-resurrection appearances of Christ to his followers\, and the Holy Spirit descending on the apostles at Pentecost. In Meeting God in the Upper Room\, Monsignor Vaghi captures the various integral ways in which we continue in our day to meet the Risen Lord—in the sacraments; in our prayer lives; in our profession of Easter faith; in our works of charity and service; in our devotion to Mary\, Mother of the Church and our Mother; in the experience of the gifts of the Holy Spirit; in the call to evangelize and our efforts to evangelize in our own day—in our homes\, workplaces\, places of leisure\, in our travel. All of these make up the rich and continued spiritual legacy of that Upper Room and what happened there. \nBook signing to follow event. \nMonsignor Peter J. Vaghi\n \nMonsignor Peter J. Vaghi is pastor of the Church of the Little Flower in Bethesda\, Maryland\, and a priest of the Archdiocese of Washington. He received seminary and theological training at the Pontifical North American College and Gregorian University\, both in Rome. Msgr. Vaghi was designated “Prelate of Honor” by St. John Paul II in 1995\, and has served since 1987 as chaplain of the John Carroll Society\, a group of professional men and women in service of the Archbishop of Washington. He is the author of Encountering Jesus in Word\, Sacraments\, and Works of Charity as well as the Pillars of Faith series. He has also written articles for America\, Priest\, and Our Sunday Visitor and contributed to two collections of writings on priestly spirituality: Behold Your Mother and Born of the Eucharist. \n  \nReviews\n“Like many of you\, I always await Msgr. Vaghi’s next book…. Sure enough\, this one’s another winner\, as he takes us to where it all began\, the Upper Room\, the scene of the Last Supper and Pentecost. This work inspires the kind of meditation encouraged by St. Ignatius and his son\, Pope Francis\, as we prayerfully imagine ourselves in a biblical scene.” \n—Cardinal Timothy Michael Dolan\, archbishop of New York \n“Msgr. Peter Vaghi’s journey into ‘the most important room in Christendom’ is a journey into the heart of the Church and the heart of Jesus. Along the way\, Monsignor Vaghi offers practical wisdom for modern disciples. Meeting God in the Upper Room is contemporary spiritual writing at its finest.” \n—Matt Malone\, SJ\, editor-in-chief of America magazine \n“As each follower of Jesus recognizes the call to be an evangelizing disciple\, we take on the responsibility of renewing our faith\, of standing firm in the conviction of its truth and finally of sharing it. Msgr. Vaghi provides guidance and support for all three of those elements in the life of the Christian today who truly wants to take on the mission that came to life in the Upper Room. We should all be grateful to Monsignor Vaghi for offering us this opportunity to spiritually visit the Upper Room and draw strength and inspiration from our encounter with God in that sacred space.” \n—Cardinal Donald Wuerl\, archbishop of Washington\, D.C

SUMMARY:Sex Scandal: The Drive to Abolish Male and Female
DESCRIPTION:Men and women used to cheer: vive la différence! \nBut now\, contrary to all science and common sense\, we’re supposed to believe that there is no difference. (And if you insist there is\, you just might be accused of a hate crime!) Sex Scandal is packed with news-breaking interviews\, shocking examples\, and “inconvenient” facts that everyone needs to read—and act on.\n \n  \n  \n  \nIf you find yourself asking: \n•Why boys who think they’re girls (and who could change their minds tomorrow) should be allowed to participate in girls’ sports—and shower in their locker rooms \n•Why expectant mothers are now “birthing individuals” \n•Why coed college dorm rooms and bathrooms are great\, but single-sex clubs are a campus danger \n•Why our military should lower physical standards and push young women and mothers into combat roles in the military\n \nThen Ashely’s compelling new book\, Sex Scandal\, is for you. In it she takes these radical campaigns to task and reveals: \n•How so-called “gender-norming” flies in the face of science (which is proving that men and women are even more different than commonly acknowledged) \n•Why—especially if you have kids—it’s almost impossible to avoid the dangerous consequences of a “gender neutral” world \n•How embracing sexual differences can make policing safer\, government more efficient—and hedge funds lose less money \n•How “gender neutrality” is making women more vulnerable to violence \nReception and book signing to follow event. \n  \nAshley McGuire\nAshley McGuire is a senior fellow with The Catholic Association and a founding editor of altFem\, a web magazine devoted to the exploration of faith and gender. She writes and speaks widely about religious freedom\, Catholicism\, and women. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times\, Wall Street Journal\, Washington Post\, USA TODAY\, and TIME magazine among others. McGuire is a recipient of the Susan B. Anthony List’s Young Pro-Life Leader award. She lives in Washington\, D.C.\, with her husband and two children. \n  \n\nReviews\n“Human biology is under siege—at the workplace\, on the playing field\, in classrooms and bathrooms\, and even in our dictionaries! In this ground-breaking and meticulously researched book\, Ashley McGuire plunges into every front of the progressives’ war on the sexes. She rips the lid off the Left’s obliteration of the fundamental differences between men and women. She exposes the profound havoc militant feminists and gender-bending crusaders are causing in our schools and culture. Sex Scandal searingly documents how the radical pursuit of ‘gender neutrality’ threatens true equality for all. McGuire’s work is both an invaluable resource and a brave public service.”\n—Michelle Malkin\, New York Times bestselling author of Culture of Corruption and Unhinged: Exposing Liberals Gone Wild \n  \n“The ‘war on boys’ turned into a rout and we now live in an Orwellian society where everything about ‘sex’ and ‘gender’ is dictated to us by a group of powerful\, ideological bullies. Ashley McGuire documents where we are\, how it happened\, and what’s next in exacting—and harrowing—detail.”\n—Jonathan V. Last\, author of What to Expect When No One’s Expecting: America’s Coming Demographic Disaster and senior writer at the Weekly Standard \n  \n“In her important book Sex Scandal\, Ashley McGuire sounds the alarm on the destructive drive to eliminate sex differences. With devastating facts and figures she exposes the radical gender warriors who deny reality as the enemy of women’s true equality.”\n—Kate O’Beirne\, former Washington editor of National Review and author of Women Who Make the World Worse \n  \n“A masterful indictment of the Sexual Revolution and all its empty promises\, Sex Scandal establishes Ashley McGuire as a powerful new voice and leader in the rising counterculture. Stylishly written\, morally urgent\, and logically flawless\, this breakthrough book is essential reading for an age of delusion.”\n—Mary Eberstadt\, author of It’s Dangerous to Believe\, How the West Really Lost God\, and Adam and Eve after the Pill

SUMMARY:Cardinal Newman and the Oratory of St. Philip Neri
DESCRIPTION:Monsignor Andrew Wadsworth\, the moderator of the Oratorian community of St. Philip Neri here in Washington\, D.C.\, and the executive director of the International Commission on English in the Liturgy\, will visit the CIC on Feb. 9 after the noon Mass (approximately 12:50 p.m.) to discuss the Oratory of St. Philip Neri and its most distinguished son in the English-speaking world\, Blessed John Henry Newman (1801-1890). Monsignor Wadsworth will speak for about 30 minutes and then answer questions.\n\n\n\n  \nMany are familiar with Newman the writer\, the philosopher\, and the theologian\, but fewer are familiar with Newman the Oratorian. It was Newman who\, after completing a brief novitiate at the Roman Oratory in the Eternal City\, imported the Oratory and its distinct brand of spirituality to British soil. He established the Oratories in both Birmingham and London\, respectively\, and served as provost of the former until his death nearly half a century later.\n\n\n\n\n  \nIf you would like to learn more about Cardinal Newman\, please also consider joining the CIC Book Club on Thursdays after Mass (conference room\, 12:45 p.m.). The group is currently reading Father Stanley Jaki’s Apologetics as Meant by Newman.

SUMMARY:How I Stayed Catholic at Harvard with Aurora Griffin
DESCRIPTION:A Harvard graduate\, Rhodes Scholar\, and devout Catholic tells you everything you need to know about keeping your faith at a modern university. Drawing on her recent experience\, Aurora Griffin shares forty practical tips relating to academics\, community\, prayer\, and service that helped her stay Catholic in college. \nAurora Griffin reminds us that keeping the faith is a conscious decision\, reinforced by commitment to daily practices. Her story illustrates that when you decide your faith matters to you\, no one can take it away\, even in the most secular environments and under strong peer pressure. Throughout the book\, she shows how being Catholic in college did not prevent her from having a full “college experience\,” but actually enabled her to make the most of her time at Harvard. \nAurora encourages students who are about to begin this formative journey\, or those now in college\, that the most valuable parts of college life — lasting friendships\, intellectual growth\, and cherished memories — are experienced in a more meaningful way when lived in and through the Catholic faith.

SUMMARY:"What a Piece of Work is Man": Reflections on the Human Person (Part 3)
DESCRIPTION:Human at Heart\nSt. Thomas Aquinas on the Spiritual Life\nSt. Paul says that “the love of God has been poured forth into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us” (Rom. 5:5) This one passage announces two mysteries: the mystery of the human heart and the mystery of the grace of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. The purpose of this talk is to contemplate the mystery of the human heart in a deep but practical way so that we might live more fully by the grace of the Holy Spirit who dwells in our hearts. St. Thomas Aquinas will guide us through these mysteries. Although St. Thomas Aquinas is widely renown for his theological teaching\, few people think of him as a master of the spiritual life. He is even sometimes dismissed for being excessively theoretical or out of touch with the human heart. But in reality St. Thomas Aquinas was a master of the spiritual life. His teaching on the human heart is profound\, and abounds with many practical implications for the spiritual life. \nFr. James Brent\n \nFr. James Dominic Brent\, O.P. was born and raised in Michigan. He pursued his undergraduate and graduate studies in Philosophy\, and completed his doctorate in Philosophy at Saint Louis University on the epistemic status of Christian beliefs according to Saint Thomas Aquinas. He has articles in the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy on Natural Theology\, in the Oxford Handbook of Thomas Aquinas on “God’s Knowledge and Will”\, and an article forthcoming on “Thomas Aquinas” in the Oxford Handbook of the Epistemology of Theology. He earned his STB from the Dominican House of Studies in 2010\, and was ordained a priest in the same year. He taught in the School of Philosophy at The Catholic University of America from 2010- 2014\, and spent the year of 2014-2015 doing full time itinerant preaching on college campuses across the United States. He is currently on the faculty at the Dominican House of Studies\, where he teaches philosophy. \n  \nReception to follow event. \n  \nCo-Sponsored by: \n \n
