SUMMARY:The Fisherman's Tomb: The True Story of the Vatican's Secret Search
DESCRIPTION:  \nA Texas oilman. A brilliant female archaeologist. An unknown world underneath the Vatican. \nIn 1939\, a team of workers beneath the Vatican unearthed an early Christian grave. This surprising discovery launched a secret quest that would last decades — a quest to discover the long-lost burial place of the Apostle Peter. \nFrom earliest times\, Christian tradition held that Peter — a lowly fisherman from Galilee\, whom Christ made leader of his Church — was executed in Rome by Emperor Nero and buried on Vatican Hill. But his tomb had been lost to history. Now\, funded anonymously by a wealthy American\, a small army of workers embarked on the dig of a lifetime. \nThe incredible\, sometimes shocking\, story of the 75-year search and its key players has never been fully told — until now. The quest would pit one of the 20th century’s most talented archaeologists — a woman — against top Vatican insiders. The Fisherman’s Tomb is a story of the triumph of faith and genius against all odds.

SUMMARY:Why Liberalism Failed
DESCRIPTION:Has liberalism failed because it has succeeded? \nOf the three dominant ideologies of the twentieth century—fascism\, communism\, and liberalism—only the last remains. This has created a peculiar situation in which liberalism’s proponents tend to forget that it is an ideology and not the natural end-state of human political evolution. As Patrick Deneen argues in this provocative book\, liberalism is built on a foundation of contradictions: it trumpets equal rights while fostering incomparable material inequality; its legitimacy rests on consent\, yet it discourages civic commitments in favor of privatism; and in its pursuit of individual autonomy\, it has given rise to the most far-reaching\, comprehensive state system in human history. Here\, Deneen offers an astringent warning that the centripetal forces now at work on our political culture are not superficial flaws but inherent features of a system whose success is generating its own failure.

SUMMARY:A Woman Who Made the World Better: Remembering Kate O’Beirne
DESCRIPTION:When Kate O’Beirne died\, tributes to her that appeared in numerous publications including National Review\, set in motion many examinations of conscience. What is the legacy we leave behind as Catholics in the public square? Is it a focus on faith and family\, excellence\, and being present to everyone who crosses your path? Many cited Kate as a model and inspiration for women\, in a particular way\, in the world today – especially those who know and love their faith and want to share it naturally and joyfully\, attracting others to it. \n

SUMMARY:The Hillbilly Thomists
DESCRIPTION:What is a Hillbilly Thomist?\n\n\nIn 1955\, the southern author Flannery O’Connor said of herself\, “Everybody who has read Wise Blood thinks I’m a hillbilly nihilist\, whereas. . .I’m a hillbilly Thomist.” She said that her fiction was concerned with the ways grace is at work among people who do not have access to the sacraments. The Thomist (one who follows the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas) believes that the invisible grace of God can be at work in visible things\, just as the Word became flesh and dwelt among us\, in the person of Christ. \nTraditional bluegrass music is playful and energetic; along with American folk music\, it often contains explicitly theological themes: belief in Christ\, the goodness of life\, the pain of unrequited love\, the finality of death\, and hope in eternal life. It is a traditional southern form of testimony to the presence of grace in the human heart. So when it is played by Dominicans who study Thomas Aquinas\, there is no doubt that what comes about as a result is Hillbilly Thomism. \n\n

SUMMARY:Science and Religion: The Myth of Conflict
DESCRIPTION:Stephen Barr\, President of The Society of Catholic Scientists\, discusses the unique relationship between faith and science and highlights how his organization combats this myth. \n\nThe Society of Catholic Scientists is an international lay organization founded in June of 2016 to foster fellowship among Catholic scientists and to witness to the harmony of faith and  reason. \nThe Society hopes to answer the call of Pope St. John Paul II that ‘members of the Church who are active scientists’ be of service to those who are attempting to ‘integrate the worlds of science and religion in their own intellectual and spiritual lives.’ The Society will do this through annual conferences\, symposia and seminars\, discussion groups\, lectures\, and other activities. \nIn its first year\, the SCS grew to 500 members. Nearly a hundred scientists attended its inaugural conference in April\, 2017\, along with theologians\, philosophers\, and historians. \nThe Society also provides opportunities for Catholic undergraduates\, graduate students\, and postdoctoral researchers in the natural sciences to get to know and interact with more senior colleagues. In this way the Society hopes to provide role models and mentors for young Catholics who are on the way to possible careers in science. \nTheir core mission is: \n\nTo foster fellowship among Catholic scientists.\nTo witness to the harmony between the vocation of scientist and the life of faith.\nTo be a forum for reflection upon and discussion of questions concerning the relation of science and the Catholic faith.\nTo act as a resource for Catholic educators\, pastors\, and lay people\, and for journalists and members of the general public who have questions about the significance of scientific theories and discoveries and about the relation of science and faith.

SUMMARY:Before & After Google: Tips for Discussing Pro-Life Issues with Non-Catholics
DESCRIPTION:In 2017\, Stephanie was a presenter for the series “Talks at Google\,” speaking on abortion at Google headquarters in Mountain View\, California. There she applied the Socratic method and storytelling to the debate surrounding abortion. She invited the audience to be “pro-conversation” on a topic that can be one of the most divisive\, and demonstrated that it is possible to be gracious and respectful when encountering different ideas. \nJoin us at the CIC as Stephanie shares her insights and experiences of not only how she prepared for this Google talk but how she prepares in general for interacting with the culture\, and offers practical “take aways” for the audience to apply in their own life. She will also incorporate stories of professionals in the world\, going about their daily duties\, who have “won” people around them by their witness. \nVisit her website to learn more about Stephanie and her work.

SUMMARY:When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment
DESCRIPTION:The transgender movement has hit breakneck speed. In the space of a year\, it’s gone from something that most Americans had never heard of to a cause claiming the mantle of civil rights. \nBut can a boy truly be “trapped” in a girl’s body? Can modern medicine really “reassign” sex? Is sex something “assigned” in the first place? What’s the loving response to a friend or child experiencing a gender-identity conflict? What should our law say on these issues? \nWhen Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment provides thoughtful answers to all of these questions. Drawing on the best insights from biology\, psychology\, and philosophy\, Ryan T. Anderson offers a balanced approach to the policy issues\, a nuanced vision of human embodiment\, and a sober and honest survey of the human costs of getting human nature wrong. \nEveryone has something at stake in today’s debates about gender identity. Analyzing education and employment policies\, Obama-era bathroom and locker-room mandates\, politically correct speech codes and religious-freedom violations\, Anderson shows how the law is being used to coerce and penalize those who believe the truth about human nature. And he shows how Americans can begin to push back with principle and prudence\, compassion and grace.

SUMMARY:Finding God in the Modern World (Part 3)
DESCRIPTION:The Drama of Grace\nSigrid Undset and the Narrative of Conversion\nwith Fr. Raymund Snyder\, OP\nSigrid Undset is best known for her novel Kristin Lavransdatter\, which earned her the Nobel Prize in 1928. Although she is acclaimed for the historical and psychological realism of this portrait of a 14th Norwegian woman\, her novels also contain a deeper layer of richness that can only properly be appreciated through a theological lens. In this lecture\, Fr. Snyder will present some of Undset’s stories of conversion in light of St. Thomas Aquinas’s doctrine of grace. Undset’s writings illustrate to modern readers the beauty of a heart transformed by the God who is ever ancient and ever new.

SUMMARY:Just Right: A Life in Pursuit of Liberty
DESCRIPTION:Lee Edwards is the preeminent historian of the conservative movement. But as this riveting memoir makes clear\, he has not simply observed conservatism as a detached scholar; he has been active on the national stage longer than any other conservative in America. \nSince committing his life to pro-freedom and anticommunist efforts as a young man in 1956\, he has been present at nearly every major event of the modern conservative movement. In his tireless pursuit of liberty\, Dr. Edwards has combined politics\, policy\, and philosophy. \nHis memoir is full of colorful stories from a man who has done it all in a remarkable\, multifaceted career and appears at a critical time in the history of American conservatism. In an inspiring final chapter aimed at the rising generation\, Dr. Edwards shows how conservatives can remain a major political and philosophical force in America.

SUMMARY:Rebuilding His Footprints
DESCRIPTION:Today\, when Christianity and policy are discussed\, the narrative is often centered on this idea of western values. In reality\, Christianity’s rich history and culture started in the Middle East. Now with wars raging and Islamic extremism rampant\, this rich history and culture is being decimated in the Middle East. Christian churches that have stood for centuries are being leveled\, many Christians are fleeing their homeland for their lives\, and Christianity in the Middle East is on the verge of being wiped out. \nDespite all this\, local and international forces are dedicated to reversing these trends\, protecting human rights\, and combating religious persecution in the Middle East. Join us on October 10th as two subject matter experts discuss the local and international steps underway to help restore Christianity in the Middle East. \nReception to follow event. \n[button type=”simple_button_link” url=”https://app.etapestry.com/onlineforms/CatholicInformationCenter/RebuildingHisFootprints.html” target=”” button_color_fon=”#d79b4b” ]RSVP[/button] \n\nSpeakers:\nAndrew Doran is Vice President & Senior Policy Advisor at In Defense of Christians. He is the founder of Paramilitary Educational preparation year for Christian – Jewish youth launched on 2017. \nOne of Shadi’s biggest successes was to achieve recognition for Christians in Israel be officially registered as Arameans. In 2014\, after seven years of work\, former Interior Minister Mr. Gidon Saar to approve their appeal to be registered as Arameans instead of Arabs. This achievement allowed recognition of Christians in Israel as an indigenous group with their Aramaic identity and language.  Shadi was invited to speak in front of the UN Committee of Minorities and Human Rights\, asking them to protect persecuted Middle Eastern Christians and allowing them statehood. \nIn 2015 Shadi was a candidate for the Knesset leading the “Free Christian Aramaic voice” movement inside Yisrael Betenu party.   \nShadi participates in several international conferences and Campuses tours discussing the Jewish – Christian Aramaic relations inside and outside of Israel.  He is fearless in explaining the moral treatment of the Christian minority in Israel.  Shadi often presents his research on how Israel treat its Christian minority and other minorities.  He is on the forefront revealing propaganda against the state of Israel\, and is an outspoken defender against BDS campaigns.   \nToday\, Shadi is a fellow with the Philos Project and he hosts many Christian delegations from all over the worlds\, showing them his village and teaching them about their Christian roots in Israel.  He is dedicated to educating local and foreigner visitors of all nationalities on their Eastern Aramaic Christian roots\, identity and language. SUMMARY:Catholicism in the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION: Fr. White will talk about his new book on Catholicism and the challenges and promise of Catholicism in the 21st century\, followed by comments and conversation with Mary Eberstadt and Robert Royal. \nThe Light of Christ provides an accessible presentation of Catholicism that is grounded in traditional theology\, but engaged with a host of contemporary questions or objections. Inspired by the theologies of Irenaeus\, Thomas Aquinas and John Henry Newman\, and rooted in a post-Vatican II context\, Fr. Thomas Joseph White presents major doctrines of the Christian religion in a way that is comprehensible for non-specialists: knowledge of God\, the mystery of the Trinity\, the Incarnation and the atonement\, the sacraments and the moral life\, eschatology and prayer. \nAt the same time\, The Light of Christ also addresses topics such as evolution\, the modern historical study of Jesus and the Bible\, and objections to Catholic moral teaching. Touching on the concerns of contemporary readers\, Fr. White examines questions such as whether Christianity is compatible with the findings of the modern sciences\, do historical Jesus studies disrupt or confirm the teaching of the faith\, and does history confirm the antiquity of Catholic claims. \nThis book serves as an excellent introduction for young professionals with no specialized background in theology who are interested in learning more about Catholicism\, or as an introduction to Catholic theology. It will also serve as a helpful text for theology courses in a university context. \nAs Fr. White states in the book’s introduction: “This is a book that offers itself as a companion. I do not presume to argue the reader into the truths of the Catholic faith\, though I will make arguments. My goal is to make explicit in a few broad strokes the shape of Catholicism. I hope to outline its inherent intelligibility or form as a mystery that is at once visible and invisible\, ancient and contemporary\, mystical and reasonable.” \n\nAbout the Speakers:\nFr. Thomas Joseph White is the author of Wisdom in the Face of Modernity: A Study in Thomistic Natural Theology (Sapientia Press\, 2009)\, The Incarnate Lord: A Thomistic Study in Christology (The Catholic University of America Press\, 2015)\, and Exodus (Brazos Press\, 2016). He has edited several books\, and is co-editor of the theological journal Nova et Vetera (English edition). In 2011 he was appointed an ordinary member of the Pontifical Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas. Fr. White is currently a participating scholar in the project Virtue\, Happiness\, & the Meaning of Life sponsored by the John Templeton Foundation. \nMore information about Fr. White’s publications can be found on his academia.edu profile. \n  \n \nMary Eberstadt is an essayist and author of several influential works of non-fiction\, including How the West Really Lost God: A New Theory of Secularization; Adam and Eve after the Pill: Paradoxes of the Sexual Revolution; and Home-Alone America. Her novel The Loser Letters: A Comic Tale of Life\, Death\, and Atheism\, has been adapted for stage and will premiere in fall 2016. She is also editor of the anthology Why I Turned Right: Leading Baby Boom Conservatives Chronicle Their Political Journeys. \nA frequent contributor to magazines and journals including TIME\, The Wall Street Journal\, National Review\, the Weekly Standard\, and First Things\, Mrs. Eberstadt (nee Tedeschi) has also served as an editor at Policy Review\, The Public Interest\, and The National Interest. Previous affiliations include the Hoover Institution and the Ethics and Public Policy Center. In 2011\, she founded a literary organization called the Kirkpatrick Society that mentored hundreds of women writers. \nDuring the Reagan administration\, Mrs. Eberstadt spent two years as a speechwriter to Secretary of State George Shultz. In 2014\, Seton Hall University awarded Mrs. Eberstadt an honorary doctorate in humane letters. She lives in the Washington\, DC area. \n  \nRobert Royal is the founder and president of the Faith & Reason Institute in Washington\, D.C. and editor-in-chief of The Catholic Thing (www.thecatholicthing.org)  His books include: 1492 And All That: Political Manipulations of History (1992)\, Reinventing the American People: Unity and Diversity Today (1995)\, The Virgin and the Dynamo: The Use and Abuse of Religion in the Environment Debate(1999\, Eerdmans)\, Dante Alighieri in the Spiritual Legacy Series (1999\, Crossroad)\, and The Catholic Martyrs of the Twentieth Century: A Comprehensive Global History (2000\, Crossroad)\, The Pope’s Army (2006\, Crossroad)\, and The God That Did Not Fail (2006\, Encounter). SUMMARY:Why I Don't Call Myself Gay
DESCRIPTION:Daniel C. Mattson\, author of the new book “Why I Don’t Call Myself Gay: How I Reclaimed My Sexual Reality and Found Peace” will discuss his personal journey to and from a gay identity and detail the importance for the Church to have a prophetic role in the world in reclaiming sexual reality.  \nHis talk will focus on the lessons he’s learned as a Prodigal Son who has returned home to his Father’s house\, as well as the importance for the Church to have a prophetic role in the world in reclaiming sexual reality. A key focus of Mattson’s book and his work is that the words we use matter. Mattson will discuss why he believes that the current lexicon of LGBTQIA sexual identities does injury both to God and man and reflect an abuse of language\, designed to undermine the creative wisdom of God. In a religion rooted in the Logos\, the Word made flesh\, Mattson believes we must reflect the nature of created reality in the words we use. For Mattson\, this means the only words that are objectively true–and therefore helpful–are the Words Christ said while he walked among us\, incarnate as a man\, “Have you not read that the one who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female?'” \nBook signing and reception to follow event. \n  \n\nAbout the Author: \nDaniel C. Mattson is a writer and a public speaker who proclaims the Good News of the Catholic Church’s teaching on homosexuality. His story is told in the award-winning documentary Desire of the Everlasting Hills\, produced by the Courage Apostolate (everlastinghills.org) His writing has appeared in Communio\, First Things\, The National Catholic Register\, andCrisis Magazine\, among others. He is a frequent guest on Catholic radio and has appeared several times on EWTN. A professional orchestral trombone player\, Mattson has performed and presented master classes around the world\, including at the famed St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia. \n  \n\nReviews: \n“I encourage many to read the following testimonial\, which… bears witness to the mercy and goodness of God\, to the efficacy of his grace\, and to the veracity of the teachings of his Church.”\n— Cardinal Robert Sarah\, from the Foreword; Author\, God or Nothing \n“Daniel Mattson has written an honest account of the genuine struggles faced by those with same-sex attraction. Drawing upon a wealth of spiritual insights and wisdom from across our deep Catholic tradition\, he shares with us how he has come to understand and accept God’s loving plan for his life\, as well as the beauty and richness of the Church’s teachings on chastity. The tenderness and mercy of God is evident throughout and is a powerful reminder for all of us!”\n— Cardinal Timothy Dolan\, Archbishop of New York \n“This powerful book reminds us that we need to accompany our brothers and sisters in their struggles with compassion and love\, patience and understanding. I pray that this book will help many to discover God’s love and to find happiness in following Jesus Christ and his beautiful plan for creation and our lives.”\n—Most Reverend José H. Gomez\, Archbishop of Los Angeles \n“Dan Mattson is a profile in courage.  This profoundly moving story of his experience of same sex attraction and his reflections on the hard-won truth that those attractions do not define him mark a way forward for others.  I highly recommend this memoir to pastoral ministers accompanying our brothers and sisters in similar circumstances.”\n— Cardinal Seán P. O’Malley\, GCIH OFM Cap.\, Archbishop of Boston

SUMMARY:Finding God in the Modern World (Part 1)
DESCRIPTION:Large and Startling Figures\nFlannery O’Connor’s Postmodern Apologetic\nwith Dr. Frederick C. Bauerschmidt\nWriting to a friend in the mid-1950s\, the American fiction writer Flannery O’Connor noted that we live in an age in which “the moral sense has been bred out of certain sections of the population\, like the wings have been bred off certain chickens to produce more white meat on them….This is a Generation of wingless chickens\, which I suppose is what Nietzsche meant when he said God was dead.” In such a situation\, she felt\, subtlety could not work: “you have to make your vision apparent by shock—to the hard of hearing you shout\, and for the almost blind you draw large and startling figures.” Dr. Bauerschmidt will explore how\, through her fiction\, O’Conner presented her Catholic vision by means of grotesque and often shockingly violent tales in which the absolute demands of belief clash with postmodern indifference\, attempting to open jaded modern readers to the possibility of transcendent truth. \nPart Two–“Saved in Hope: The Christian Vision of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis” with Philip Zaleski\nPart Three–“The Drama of Grace: Sigrid Undset and the Narrative of Conversion” with Fr. Raymund Snyder\, OP \n\nDr. Frederick C. Bauerschmidt is Professor of Theology at Loyola University Maryland and a deacon of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. He has published book on the theology of Thomas Aquinas and the Christian mystical tradition\, as well as numerous articles on Catholic life and thought. \n  \n  \n  \nCo-Sponsored by:

SUMMARY:Debating Religious Liberty and Discrimination
DESCRIPTION:Virtually everyone supports religious liberty\, and virtually everyone opposes discrimination. But how do we handle the hard questions that arise when exercises of religious liberty seem to discriminate unjustly? How do we promote the common good while respecting conscience in a diverse society?\n \nThis point-counterpoint book brings together leading voices in the culture wars to debate such questions: John Corvino\, a longtime LGBT-rights advocate\, opposite Ryan T. Anderson and Sherif Girgis\, prominent young social conservatives. \nMany such questions have arisen in response to same-sex marriage: How should we treat county clerks who do not wish to authorize such marriages\, for example; or bakers\, florists\, and photographers who do not wish to provide same-sex wedding services? But the conflicts extend well beyond the LGBT rights arena. How should we treat hospitals\, schools\, and adoption agencies that can’t in conscience follow antidiscrimination laws\, healthcare mandates\, and other regulations? Should corporations ever get exemptions? Should public officials? \nShould we keep controversial laws like the Religious Freedom Restoration Act\, or pass new ones like the First Amendment Defense Act? Should the law give religion and conscience special protection at all\, and if so\, why? What counts as discrimination\, and when is it unjust? What kinds of material and dignitary harms should the law try to fight-and what is dignitary harm\, anyway? \nBeyond the law\, how should we treat religious beliefs and practices we find mistaken or even oppressive? Should we tolerate them or actively discourage them? \nIn point-counterpoint format\, Corvino\, Anderson and Girgis explore these questions and more. Although their differences run deep\, they tackle them with civility\, clarity\, and flair. Their debate is an essential contribution to contemporary discussions about why religious liberty matters and what respecting it requires. \nBook signing and reception to follow event. \n  \n  \nAbout the Speakers\nRyan T. Anderson is the William E. Simon Senior Research Fellow in American Principles and Public Policy at the Heritage Foundation\, and the Founder and Editor of Public Discourse: Ethics\, Law\, and the Common Good\, the online journal of the Witherspoon Institute in Princeton\, NJ. A Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude graduate of Princeton University\, he earned his Ph.D. in political philosophy from the University of Notre Dame. Anderson’s research has been cited by two U.S. Supreme Court justices in two Supreme Court cases. \nHis writings have appeared in the New York Times\, the Washington Post\, the Wall Street Journal\, the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy\, the Harvard Health Policy Review\, the Weekly Standard\, and National Review. Anderson has appeared on ABC\, CNN\, CNBC\, MSNBC\, and the Fox News Channel. In addition to a memorable 2013 debate about marriage on CNN’s Piers Morgan Live\, his news interviews include appearances on ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos\, CNN’s New Day with Chris Cuomo\, MSNBC’s The Ed Show with Ed Schultz\, and Fox News’ Hannity. \nSherif Girgis is a research scholar at the Witherspoon Institute. He is coauthor of the book “What Is Marriage? Man and Woman: A Defense” (Encounter Books\, 2012)\, and of “Debating Religious Liberty and Discrimination” (Oxford University Press\, 2017). He earned his A.B. at Princeton University\, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude. After earning a master’s degree at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar\, and a law degree from Yale\, where he was an editor of the Yale Law Journal\, Girgis returned to Princeton to do a Ph.D. in philosophy\, where he is currently completing his dissertation. Sherif has written on social issues in academic and popular venues\, including Public Discourse\, National Review\, Commonweal\, the New York Times\, the Yale Law Journal\, the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy\, and the Wall Street Journal\, and has spoken at more than 80 lectures\, conferences\, and debates\, both popular and academic. \nReviews\n“In our deeply divided nation\, Debating Religious Liberty and Discrimination is a refreshing and hope-inspiring book. Provocative\, clear\, careful in argument\, searching in coverage\, it shows that people who strongly disagree can both find much common ground and also articulate their differences with respect and care\, fostering a community of reason. It will be a wonderful book for undergraduate teaching\, but it is also challenging for people well-versed in the subject\, whether they agree or disagree.” — Martha C. Nussbaum\, School of Law and Department of Philosophy\, The University of Chicago \n“One of the most important debates in our time is that it of religious liberty as it relates to controversies over sexuality and marriage. Sadly\, usually most Americans don’t have these debates at all\, content to stay in our silos and never engage with those who disagree with us. This book is different. Ryan Anderson\, Sherif Girgis\, and John Corvino model how to hold strong (very strong) opinions while debating others with respect. This book will equip you\, wherever you stand\, on how the “other side” from you thinks. If American society follows the lead of this book\, our culture wars won’t end\, but they just might be kinder and smarter. That’s a good start.” — Russell Moore\, President\, Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention
