SUMMARY:When Women Pray: Healing and Hope for the Church in Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Kathleen Beckman asked eleven women to write about their experiences with the power of prayer “to strengthen an army of praying women united for the many spiritual and temporal needs of the human family.” None of us have any doubt these days that the need is great — and in our beloved Church too\, as so many of us are shaken by the scandalous news of this summer. Kathryn Jean Lopez\, one of the eleven chapter authors\, discusses the urgency for women to “save the peace of the world\,” as recent popes have put it\, in loving\, fervent\, prayerful intercession. \nKathleen and Kathryn will discuss practical ways to become “contemplatives in action” for “such a time as this” (Esther 4:14). \nKathleen Beckman is co-founder of the Foundation of Prayer for Priests and author of When Women Pray and Praying for Priests (a second edition of which is being released this Fall). Kathryn Jean Lopez is senior fellow at the National Review Institute where she directs the Center for Religion\, Culture\, and Civil Society and editor-at-large of National Review.

SUMMARY:Getting to Know Your Archdiocese: A Wikipedia Editing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nJoin us as we gather to edit articles on parishes in the Archdiocese of Washington in honor of the Feast of St. Jerome\, patron saint of translators\, librarians\, and encyclopedists. There is a rich institutional history of the Catholic Church here in the Archdiocese dating all the way back to John Carroll\, the first Bishop and Archbishop in the United States. Our goal is to make that history known on the world’s largest online encyclopedia. \nAttendees will learn to edit Wikipedia and use online and print sources to update related Wikipedia articles. Experienced Wikipedians will be on hand to provide training and guidance. There will also be some librarians available to help with research. \nLaptops are required; please bring your own. Wikimedia has two laptops to loan. Reserve one by emailing info@wikimediadc.org. New editors are strongly encouraged to create a Wikipedia account before the day of the event. Do so by clicking here. You can also view the Wikipedia event page here\, which will include the worklist and any available bibliographies. \nPlease bring any information\, historical images\, books\, or articles that you have. Check with your library to see if there are any books about your parish in their collection. If you would like to use the Archdiocesan history of your parish as source material\, ask your pastor to send his approval to archives@adw.org. \nSchedule:\n\n12:30PM Arrive and get settled. SUMMARY:Tales That Tell: Moral Devastation & Original Sin in Literature (Pt. 1)
DESCRIPTION:Forgiveness and Solidarity in Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov\nFyodor Dostoevsky’s last and greatest novel\, The Brothers Karamazov\, explores the question of God’s existence against the backdrop of suffering and betrayal within a troubled family. The genius of Dostoevsky is to have grasped that there can be no love for human beings without a love for God — and conversely\, there can be no belief in God without a deep and profound love for mankind. Prof. Healy will present a brief overview of the structure and characters of the novel\, focusing on the themes of solidarity and forgiveness. \n

SUMMARY:The Human Advantage: The Future of American Work in an Age of Smart Machines
DESCRIPTION:Bestselling author and economist Jay W. Richards makes the definitive case for how the free market and individual responsibility can save the American Dream in an age of automation and mass disruption. \nFor two and a half centuries\, America has been held together by the belief that if you work hard and conduct yourself responsibly in this country\, you will be able to prosper and leave a better life for your children. But over the past decade\, that idea has come into crisis. A recession\, the mass outsourcing of stable jobs\, and a coming wave of automation that will replace millions of blue- and white-collar jobs alike have left many people worried that the game is rigged and that our best days are behind us. \nIn this story-driven manifesto on the future of American work\, Jay Richards argues that such thinking is counterproductive–making us more fragile\, more dependent\, and less equipped to succeed in a rapidly changing economy. If we’re going to survive\, we need a new model for how ordinary people can thrive in this age of mass disruption. Richards pulls back the curtain on what’s really happening in our economy\, dispatching myths about capitalism\, greed\, and upward mobility. And he tells the stories of how real individuals have begun to rebuild a culture of virtue\, capitalizing on the skills that are most uniquely human: creativity\, resilience\, and empathy for the needs of others. \nDestined to take its place alongside classics like Economics in One Lesson\, The Human Advantage is the essential book for understanding the future of American work\, and how each of us can make this era of staggering change work on our behalf. \nBooks available for purchase at the CIC.

SUMMARY:Why Israel Matters: A Theological Perspective
DESCRIPTION:The re-emergence of Israel as a nation-state caught the world by surprise and continues to trouble it deeply. That Israel matters geo-politically cannot be doubted\, but does it matter theologically? Is there a place for Israel\, as there is for Jews\, in Christian eschatology? \nCo-sponsored with the Thomistic Institute and The Philos Project. \n \n  \n  \n \n\nDouglas Farrow is Professor of Theology and Christian Thought\, and sometime holder of the Kennedy Smith Chair in Catholic Studies\, at McGill University in Montreal. He has lectured and published widely in North America and Europe on moral\, doctrinal\, and political subjects. Among his recent works are Ascension Theology\, Desiring a Better Country\, and the forthcoming Theological Negotiations.  Professor Farrow is a member of the Academy of Catholic Theology and a frequent contributor to First Things. He received a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal for his contributions to public discourse on significant social issues.

SUMMARY:The Fisherman's Tomb: The True Story of the Vatican's Secret Search
DESCRIPTION:  \nA Texas oilman. A brilliant female archaeologist. An unknown world underneath the Vatican. \nIn 1939\, a team of workers beneath the Vatican unearthed an early Christian grave. This surprising discovery launched a secret quest that would last decades — a quest to discover the long-lost burial place of the Apostle Peter. \nFrom earliest times\, Christian tradition held that Peter — a lowly fisherman from Galilee\, whom Christ made leader of his Church — was executed in Rome by Emperor Nero and buried on Vatican Hill. But his tomb had been lost to history. Now\, funded anonymously by a wealthy American\, a small army of workers embarked on the dig of a lifetime. \nThe incredible\, sometimes shocking\, story of the 75-year search and its key players has never been fully told — until now. The quest would pit one of the 20th century’s most talented archaeologists — a woman — against top Vatican insiders. The Fisherman’s Tomb is a story of the triumph of faith and genius against all odds.

SUMMARY:Why Liberalism Failed
DESCRIPTION:Has liberalism failed because it has succeeded? \nOf the three dominant ideologies of the twentieth century—fascism\, communism\, and liberalism—only the last remains. This has created a peculiar situation in which liberalism’s proponents tend to forget that it is an ideology and not the natural end-state of human political evolution. As Patrick Deneen argues in this provocative book\, liberalism is built on a foundation of contradictions: it trumpets equal rights while fostering incomparable material inequality; its legitimacy rests on consent\, yet it discourages civic commitments in favor of privatism; and in its pursuit of individual autonomy\, it has given rise to the most far-reaching\, comprehensive state system in human history. Here\, Deneen offers an astringent warning that the centripetal forces now at work on our political culture are not superficial flaws but inherent features of a system whose success is generating its own failure.

SUMMARY:A Woman Who Made the World Better: Remembering Kate O’Beirne
DESCRIPTION:When Kate O’Beirne died\, tributes to her that appeared in numerous publications including National Review\, set in motion many examinations of conscience. What is the legacy we leave behind as Catholics in the public square? Is it a focus on faith and family\, excellence\, and being present to everyone who crosses your path? Many cited Kate as a model and inspiration for women\, in a particular way\, in the world today – especially those who know and love their faith and want to share it naturally and joyfully\, attracting others to it. \n

SUMMARY:The Hillbilly Thomists
DESCRIPTION:What is a Hillbilly Thomist?\n\n\nIn 1955\, the southern author Flannery O’Connor said of herself\, “Everybody who has read Wise Blood thinks I’m a hillbilly nihilist\, whereas. . .I’m a hillbilly Thomist.” She said that her fiction was concerned with the ways grace is at work among people who do not have access to the sacraments. The Thomist (one who follows the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas) believes that the invisible grace of God can be at work in visible things\, just as the Word became flesh and dwelt among us\, in the person of Christ. \nTraditional bluegrass music is playful and energetic; along with American folk music\, it often contains explicitly theological themes: belief in Christ\, the goodness of life\, the pain of unrequited love\, the finality of death\, and hope in eternal life. It is a traditional southern form of testimony to the presence of grace in the human heart. So when it is played by Dominicans who study Thomas Aquinas\, there is no doubt that what comes about as a result is Hillbilly Thomism. \n\n

SUMMARY:Science and Religion: The Myth of Conflict
DESCRIPTION:Stephen Barr\, President of The Society of Catholic Scientists\, discusses the unique relationship between faith and science and highlights how his organization combats this myth. \n\nThe Society of Catholic Scientists is an international lay organization founded in June of 2016 to foster fellowship among Catholic scientists and to witness to the harmony of faith and  reason. \nThe Society hopes to answer the call of Pope St. John Paul II that ‘members of the Church who are active scientists’ be of service to those who are attempting to ‘integrate the worlds of science and religion in their own intellectual and spiritual lives.’ The Society will do this through annual conferences\, symposia and seminars\, discussion groups\, lectures\, and other activities. \nIn its first year\, the SCS grew to 500 members. Nearly a hundred scientists attended its inaugural conference in April\, 2017\, along with theologians\, philosophers\, and historians. \nThe Society also provides opportunities for Catholic undergraduates\, graduate students\, and postdoctoral researchers in the natural sciences to get to know and interact with more senior colleagues. In this way the Society hopes to provide role models and mentors for young Catholics who are on the way to possible careers in science. \nTheir core mission is: \n\nTo foster fellowship among Catholic scientists.\nTo witness to the harmony between the vocation of scientist and the life of faith.\nTo be a forum for reflection upon and discussion of questions concerning the relation of science and the Catholic faith.\nTo act as a resource for Catholic educators\, pastors\, and lay people\, and for journalists and members of the general public who have questions about the significance of scientific theories and discoveries and about the relation of science and faith.

SUMMARY:Before & After Google: Tips for Discussing Pro-Life Issues with Non-Catholics
DESCRIPTION:In 2017\, Stephanie was a presenter for the series “Talks at Google\,” speaking on abortion at Google headquarters in Mountain View\, California. There she applied the Socratic method and storytelling to the debate surrounding abortion. She invited the audience to be “pro-conversation” on a topic that can be one of the most divisive\, and demonstrated that it is possible to be gracious and respectful when encountering different ideas. \nJoin us at the CIC as Stephanie shares her insights and experiences of not only how she prepared for this Google talk but how she prepares in general for interacting with the culture\, and offers practical “take aways” for the audience to apply in their own life. She will also incorporate stories of professionals in the world\, going about their daily duties\, who have “won” people around them by their witness. \nVisit her website to learn more about Stephanie and her work.

SUMMARY:When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment
DESCRIPTION:The transgender movement has hit breakneck speed. In the space of a year\, it’s gone from something that most Americans had never heard of to a cause claiming the mantle of civil rights. \nBut can a boy truly be “trapped” in a girl’s body? Can modern medicine really “reassign” sex? Is sex something “assigned” in the first place? What’s the loving response to a friend or child experiencing a gender-identity conflict? What should our law say on these issues? \nWhen Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment provides thoughtful answers to all of these questions. Drawing on the best insights from biology\, psychology\, and philosophy\, Ryan T. Anderson offers a balanced approach to the policy issues\, a nuanced vision of human embodiment\, and a sober and honest survey of the human costs of getting human nature wrong. \nEveryone has something at stake in today’s debates about gender identity. Analyzing education and employment policies\, Obama-era bathroom and locker-room mandates\, politically correct speech codes and religious-freedom violations\, Anderson shows how the law is being used to coerce and penalize those who believe the truth about human nature. And he shows how Americans can begin to push back with principle and prudence\, compassion and grace.

SUMMARY:Finding God in the Modern World (Part 3)
DESCRIPTION:The Drama of Grace\nSigrid Undset and the Narrative of Conversion\nwith Fr. Raymund Snyder\, OP\nSigrid Undset is best known for her novel Kristin Lavransdatter\, which earned her the Nobel Prize in 1928. Although she is acclaimed for the historical and psychological realism of this portrait of a 14th Norwegian woman\, her novels also contain a deeper layer of richness that can only properly be appreciated through a theological lens. In this lecture\, Fr. Snyder will present some of Undset’s stories of conversion in light of St. Thomas Aquinas’s doctrine of grace. Undset’s writings illustrate to modern readers the beauty of a heart transformed by the God who is ever ancient and ever new.

SUMMARY:Just Right: A Life in Pursuit of Liberty
DESCRIPTION:Lee Edwards is the preeminent historian of the conservative movement. But as this riveting memoir makes clear\, he has not simply observed conservatism as a detached scholar; he has been active on the national stage longer than any other conservative in America. \nSince committing his life to pro-freedom and anticommunist efforts as a young man in 1956\, he has been present at nearly every major event of the modern conservative movement. In his tireless pursuit of liberty\, Dr. Edwards has combined politics\, policy\, and philosophy. \nHis memoir is full of colorful stories from a man who has done it all in a remarkable\, multifaceted career and appears at a critical time in the history of American conservatism. In an inspiring final chapter aimed at the rising generation\, Dr. Edwards shows how conservatives can remain a major political and philosophical force in America.

SUMMARY:Rebuilding His Footprints
DESCRIPTION:Today\, when Christianity and policy are discussed\, the narrative is often centered on this idea of western values. Now with wars raging and Islamic extremism rampant\, this rich history and culture is being decimated in the Middle East. Christian churches that have stood for centuries are being leveled\, many Christians are fleeing their homeland for their lives\, and Christianity in the Middle East is on the verge of being wiped out. \nDespite all this\, local and international forces are dedicated to reversing these trends\, protecting human rights\, and combating religious persecution in the Middle East. Join us on October 10th as two subject matter experts discuss the local and international steps underway to help restore Christianity in the Middle East. \nReception to follow event. \n[button type=”simple_button_link” url=”https://app.etapestry.com/onlineforms/CatholicInformationCenter/RebuildingHisFootprints.html” target=”” button_color_fon=”#d79b4b” ]RSVP[/button] \n\nSpeakers:\nAndrew Doran is Vice President & Senior Policy Advisor at In Defense of Christians. This achievement allowed recognition of Christians in Israel as an indigenous group with their Aramaic identity and language.  Shadi was invited to speak in front of the UN Committee of Minorities and Human Rights\, asking them to protect persecuted Middle Eastern Christians and allowing them statehood. \nIn 2015 Shadi was a candidate for the Knesset leading the “Free Christian Aramaic voice” movement inside Yisrael Betenu party.   \nShadi participates in several international conferences and Campuses tours discussing the Jewish – Christian Aramaic relations inside and outside of Israel.  He is fearless in explaining the moral treatment of the Christian minority in Israel.  Shadi often presents his research on how Israel treat its Christian minority and other minorities.  He is on the forefront revealing propaganda against the state of Israel\, and is an outspoken defender against BDS campaigns.   \nToday\, Shadi is a fellow with the Philos Project and he hosts many Christian delegations from all over the worlds\, showing them his village and teaching them about their Christian roots in Israel.  He is dedicated to educating local and foreigner visitors of all nationalities on their Eastern Aramaic Christian roots\, identity and language.
