SUMMARY:The God That Did Not Fail: How Religion Built and Sustains the West
DESCRIPTION:The CIC was excited to welcome Robert Royal to discuss his book\, “The God That Did Not Fail: How Religion Built and Sustains the West.” This book is the first CIC book group pick of 2019! The CIC book group is managed by Linda Formella and Milton Grenfell.  The group meets weekly at the CIC on Thursday from 12:45pm-1:30pm. Be sure to pick up your copy of “The God That Did Not Fail: How Religion Built and Sustains the West” at the CIC today. \nSecular humanists and other “progressives” have been predicting the demise of religion for the past 250 years. But they keep running into a problem: those who were supposed to be liberated by the secular gospel that God is Dead aren’t buying it. Except for some parts of western Europe and in countries culturally destroyed by Communism\, secularization in the radical sense has not occurred. \nWhile it has not obliterated the religious impulse\, however\, the drive towards “progressive irreligion” has\, Robert Royal believes\, encouraged ignorance of religion’s central role in the development of the West. In The God That Did Not Fail\, Royal offers an original reading of religion in ancient Greece and Rome\, of Christianity and Judaism\, the Middle Ages\, the Renaissance and Reformation\, the several modern Enlightenments\, culminating with a profound assessment of our current postmodern moment. He concludes that since religion is a permanent part of human nature and of the particular character of the West\, our efforts should be directed not into a quixotic effort to deny the undeniable\, especially as we face challenges from Islamic fundamentalism\, but into promoting a well thought out and dynamic interplay of faith\, reason\, and modern freedoms.

SUMMARY:Mind\, Heart\, and Soul: Intellectuals and the Path to Rome
DESCRIPTION:In a series of fascinating interviews\, a cradle Catholic (Robert P. George) and an adult convert (R. J. Snell)\, offer the stories of sixteen converts\, each a public intellectual or leading voice in their respective fields\, and each making a significant contribution to the life of the Church. \nMind\, Heart\, and Soul is a Surprised by Truth for a new generation. It will reinvigorate the faith of Catholics and answer questions or address hurdles those discerning entering the Church may have…by people have had the same questions and the same road \nWhile some of the converts are well-known\, their stories are not. Here they speak for themselves\, providing the reasons for belief that prompted these accomplished men and women to embrace the ancient faith. \nIncluded are interviews with a bishop\, a leading theologian and priest\, a member of the International Theological Commission\, a former megachurch pastor\, a prominent pro-life scholar\, professors from Harvard and other universities\, as well as journalists and writers\, novelists and scholars. Each are interviewed by another leading scholar\, many of whom are themselves converts and familiar with the hesitations\, anxieties\, discoveries\, and hopes of those who discover the Faith. \nThese conversion stories remind us that the Catholic Church retains her vitality\, able to provide answers and reasons for hope to new generations of believers\, always sustained by the Holy Spirit. It is all too-easy to become discouraged in our day and age\, but God never fails to call people to Himself\, as evidenced by these remarkable stories. \n[button type=”simple_button_link” url=”https://www.cicdc.org/th_gallery/mind-heart-and-soul-intellectuals-and-the-path-to-rome/” target=”” button_color_fon=”#d79b4b” ]Watch Video of Event[/button] \n\nAbout the speakers:\nRobert P. George holds Princeton’s celebrated McCormick Chair in Jurisprudence and is the Director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions. He has served as chairman of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom\, and before that on the President’s Council on Bioethics and as a presidential appointee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights. He has also served as the U.S. member of UNESCO’s World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology. His many books include In Defense of Natural Law; Making Men Moral; Embryo: A Defense of Human Life; What is Marriage? Man and Woman: A Defense. A graduate of Swarthmore College\, he holds J.D. and M.T.S. degrees from Harvard University and the degrees of D.Phil.\, B.C.L.\, and D.C.L. from Oxford University. \nR. J. Snell directs the Center on the University and Intellectual Life at the Witherspoon Institute in Princeton\, NJ. Prior to this appointment he was for many years Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Philosophy Program at Eastern University and the Templeton Honors College\, where he founded and directed the Agora Institute for Civic Virtue and the Common Good. A convert to Catholicism\, he grew up Baptist and received his early education at the schools of Prairie Bible Institute and Liberty University. His first encounter with Rome occurred while pursuing an M.A. in philosophy at Boston College\, where he took several courses with Peter Kreeft. Later he earned a Ph.D. in philosophy at Marquette University. He is the author of several books as well as articles\, chapters\, and essays in a variety of scholarly and popular venues.

SUMMARY:Tales That Tell: Moral Devastation & Original Sin in Literature (Pt. 3)
DESCRIPTION:The Catastrophe of the Self: Walker Percy on Sin and Transcendence\nThroughout his writings\, Walker Percy explores modern man’s catastrophic failure to understand who he is. This talk will explain Percy’s diagnosis of this catastrophe–its nature and causes–and various false avenues of escaping it.  We will pay particular attention to how Percy’s understanding of the spiritual crisis of modernity–a crisis of self-knowledge– plays out in his science fiction novel\, Love in the Ruins.

SUMMARY:Crafts and Storytime
DESCRIPTION:Schedule:\n10:30am-Reading of “Boxes for Katjie” for ages 8-12 and arts and craft activity for ages 2-7 \n11:00am-Reading of “Sarah and Simon and No Red Paint” for ages 2-7 and arts and crafts activity for ages 8-12 \n11:30am-Lunch (Chick-fil-A) \n1:00pm-Event Ends \n“Boxes for Katje” by Candace Flemming\nIn May 1945\, a Dutch girl named Katje is thrilled to receive a letter and a package of socks\, soap\, and chocolate from Rosie\, a girl she doesn’t know who lives in Mayfield\, Indiana. The kids start to exchange letters\, and when Rosie’s family members learn of Holland’s severe post-war deprivations\, they enlist Mayfield residents to send food and clothes to Katje\, who generously shares the gifts with others in her community. The sense of suffering isn’t strong here\, in part because the Dutch townspeople are almost always depicted as smiling about the packages. But the story is still moving\, and Dressen-McQueen’s lively illustrations\, in colored pencil\, oil pastel\, and acrylic\, pack lots of color\, pattern\, and historical details onto every expansive page. Fleming based the book on her mother’s experience\, which she describes in an author’s note; in the real-life story\, however\, adults\, not children\, orchestrated the events\, a finding that may be a little disappointing to kids who took the book\, with its specific dates\, town names\, and heroic\, generous children\, as straight fact. \n  \n“Sarah and Simon and No Red Paint” by Edward Ardizzone\nFrom the distinguished author-illustrator of the maritime Tim series and winner of the Kate Greenaway medal comes this classic picture book that was recommended to our editor by a children’s bookseller in Princeton\, NJ. Please find out if Sarah and Simon and No Red Paint is still in print\, she implored\, and if it is not\, please do all you can to publish it. With some difficulty\, we procured the book\, which was indeed out of print\, read it\, and fell in love. \nHere is the story of two children\, Sarah and Simon\, whose father is a painter\, and who live with their parents and baby brother in a big room called a Studio. Their father is talented but unacknowledged\, and so the family is poor\, though very happy. When the story opens\, the father is painting his masterpiece. Sarah and Simon are good little helpers and spend their time doing chores and visiting their favorite place in town: the old second-hand bookshop with its kind owner. Soon the masterpiece is almost finished\, except for the bit of red paint needed to complete it\, and even the dealer agrees to buy it if it were finished the next day. But there is no more red paint\, and no more money left with which to buy it. So Sarah and Simon set out to help their father\, and to their surprise\, end up reconciling their family with an estranged uncle and restoring the family fortune as well all with the help and kind solicitation of the bookshop owner… \nGodine is proud to bring this classic with its detailed line drawings and delicate watercolor illustrations back into print\, and our thanks to the good bookshop buyer who came to the rescue of this wonderful book.

SUMMARY:Confronting the Crisis of Faith and Reason: Reclaiming Authentic Catholic Education
DESCRIPTION:Panelists explore the pernicious effects of secular progressive education\, and its infiltration of Catholic schools. By examining the nature and purpose of Catholic education and its roots in the classical liberal arts tradition\, the panel will recognize how neglect of our own tradition undermines both faith and reason in our children. A dynamic renewal\, however\, is transforming and inspiring a growing number of Catholic schools who are reclaiming the Church’s tradition.

SUMMARY:Building the Benedict Option
DESCRIPTION:Building the Benedict Option is a combination spiritual memoir and practical handbook for Christians who want to build communities of prayer\, socialization\, and evangelization in the places where they live and work. \nBeginning when the author was a new convert\, she desired more communal prayer and fellowship than weekly Mass could provide. She surveyed her friends–busy\, young\, urban professionals like herself–and created enriching or supportive experiences that matched their desires and schedules. The result was a less lonely and more boisterous spiritual and social life. \nNo Catholic Martha Stewart\, Libresco is frank about how she plans events that allow her to feed thirty people on a Friday night without feeling exhausted. She is honest about the obstacles to prayer and the challenge to make it inviting and unobtrusive. Above all\, she communicates the joy she has experienced since discovering ways to open her home (even when it was only a small studio apartment). \nThe reader will close this book with four or five ideas for events to try over the next few weeks\, along with the tools to make them fruitful. From film nights to picnics in the park to resume-writing evenings\, there are plenty of ideas to choose from and loads of encouragement to make more room in one’s life for others.

SUMMARY:A Catechism for Family Life: Insights from Catholic Teaching on Love\, Marriage\, Sex\, and Parenting
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of A Catechism for Family Life: Insights from Church Teaching on Love\, Marriage\, Sex\, and Parenting is to present the teachings of the Catholic Church as they relate to specific questions in marriage and family life. Many Catholics are under-catechized and have trouble both understanding and articulating Church teaching on sexuality and marriage to an increasingly challenging culture. Pope Francis\, along with the fathers of the two recent Synods on the Family\, have called for better formation for those who work in the area of marriage and family life (see Amoris Laetitia\, 202). \nTo address this need\, we gathered pertinent questions facing men\, women\, and pastoral workers in marriage and family life. We then found passages relevant to these questions by researching Church documents on marriage and family from the past one hundred years. These include papal encyclicals\, apostolic exhortations\, and addresses\, Vatican II documents\, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. \nMainstream media coverage of Church events and Church teaching leads many to misunderstand Catholic positions on marriage and family life. While the Catholic Church has developed a rich\, detailed\, and positive teaching on marriage\, family\, and sexuality\, many Catholics do not have access to this teaching\, buried as it is in lengthy Church documents which many find intimidating. Finding the relevant teaching to address specific questions is not always a simple task\, either. This book’s main contribution is to present Church teaching relevant to marriage and family in one volume clearly organized by topic and question. \nBook available for purchase at the CIC.

SUMMARY:Tales That Tell: Moral Devastation & Original Sin in Literature (Pt. 2)
DESCRIPTION:Out of This Stony Rubbish: Devastation and Rebirth in Eliot’s The Waste Land\nMore than any other work of high modernist literature\, Eliot’s The Waste Land (1922) captures the loss of meaning and purpose that has overwhelmed an entire civilization. Surrounded by fragments of past knowledge that now seem barely intelligible in the wake of World War I\, modern society appears mired in an unprecedented spiritual crisis. Yet unlike his modernist peers (e.g.\, Virginia Woolf\, Bertrand Russell\, Ezra Pound\, et al.)\, Eliot’s critique of modern life is not confined to the conceptual resources and secular axioms that have shaped modern life. Though it predates Eliot’s “conversion” to Christianity by five years\, The Waste Land‘s forceful summation of spiritual\, ecological\, psycho-sexual\, and moral devastation already contains the seeds for the spiritual awakening that will be at the center of Eliot’s “Ash Wednesday” (1927) and his Four Quartets (1936-1943). \n

SUMMARY:When Women Pray: Healing and Hope for the Church in Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Kathleen Beckman asked eleven women to write about their experiences with the power of prayer “to strengthen an army of praying women united for the many spiritual and temporal needs of the human family.” None of us have any doubt these days that the need is great — and in our beloved Church too\, as so many of us are shaken by the scandalous news of this summer. Kathryn Jean Lopez\, one of the eleven chapter authors\, discusses the urgency for women to “save the peace of the world\,” as recent popes have put it\, in loving\, fervent\, prayerful intercession. \nKathleen and Kathryn will discuss practical ways to become “contemplatives in action” for “such a time as this” (Esther 4:14). \nKathleen Beckman is co-founder of the Foundation of Prayer for Priests and author of When Women Pray and Praying for Priests (a second edition of which is being released this Fall). Kathryn Jean Lopez is senior fellow at the National Review Institute where she directs the Center for Religion\, Culture\, and Civil Society and editor-at-large of National Review.

SUMMARY:Tales That Tell: Moral Devastation & Original Sin in Literature (Pt. 1)
DESCRIPTION:Forgiveness and Solidarity in Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov\nFyodor Dostoevsky’s last and greatest novel\, The Brothers Karamazov\, explores the question of God’s existence against the backdrop of suffering and betrayal within a troubled family. The genius of Dostoevsky is to have grasped that there can be no love for human beings without a love for God — and conversely\, there can be no belief in God without a deep and profound love for mankind. Prof. Healy will present a brief overview of the structure and characters of the novel\, focusing on the themes of solidarity and forgiveness. \n

SUMMARY:The Human Advantage: The Future of American Work in an Age of Smart Machines
DESCRIPTION:Bestselling author and economist Jay W. Richards makes the definitive case for how the free market and individual responsibility can save the American Dream in an age of automation and mass disruption. \nFor two and a half centuries\, America has been held together by the belief that if you work hard and conduct yourself responsibly in this country\, you will be able to prosper and leave a better life for your children. But over the past decade\, that idea has come into crisis. A recession\, the mass outsourcing of stable jobs\, and a coming wave of automation that will replace millions of blue- and white-collar jobs alike have left many people worried that the game is rigged and that our best days are behind us. \nIn this story-driven manifesto on the future of American work\, Jay Richards argues that such thinking is counterproductive–making us more fragile\, more dependent\, and less equipped to succeed in a rapidly changing economy. If we’re going to survive\, we need a new model for how ordinary people can thrive in this age of mass disruption. Richards pulls back the curtain on what’s really happening in our economy\, dispatching myths about capitalism\, greed\, and upward mobility. And he tells the stories of how real individuals have begun to rebuild a culture of virtue\, capitalizing on the skills that are most uniquely human: creativity\, resilience\, and empathy for the needs of others. \nDestined to take its place alongside classics like Economics in One Lesson\, The Human Advantage is the essential book for understanding the future of American work\, and how each of us can make this era of staggering change work on our behalf. \nBooks available for purchase at the CIC.

SUMMARY:Why Israel Matters: A Theological Perspective
DESCRIPTION:The re-emergence of Israel as a nation-state caught the world by surprise and continues to trouble it deeply. That Israel matters geo-politically cannot be doubted\, but does it matter theologically? Is there a place for Israel\, as there is for Jews\, in Christian eschatology? \nCo-sponsored with the Thomistic Institute and The Philos Project. \n \n  \n  \n \n\nDouglas Farrow is Professor of Theology and Christian Thought\, and sometime holder of the Kennedy Smith Chair in Catholic Studies\, at McGill University in Montreal. He has lectured and published widely in North America and Europe on moral\, doctrinal\, and political subjects. Among his recent works are Ascension Theology\, Desiring a Better Country\, and the forthcoming Theological Negotiations.  Professor Farrow is a member of the Academy of Catholic Theology and a frequent contributor to First Things. He received a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal for his contributions to public discourse on significant social issues.

SUMMARY:The Fisherman's Tomb: The True Story of the Vatican's Secret Search
DESCRIPTION:  \nA Texas oilman. A brilliant female archaeologist. An unknown world underneath the Vatican. \nIn 1939\, a team of workers beneath the Vatican unearthed an early Christian grave. This surprising discovery launched a secret quest that would last decades — a quest to discover the long-lost burial place of the Apostle Peter. \nFrom earliest times\, Christian tradition held that Peter — a lowly fisherman from Galilee\, whom Christ made leader of his Church — was executed in Rome by Emperor Nero and buried on Vatican Hill. But his tomb had been lost to history. Now\, funded anonymously by a wealthy American\, a small army of workers embarked on the dig of a lifetime. \nThe incredible\, sometimes shocking\, story of the 75-year search and its key players has never been fully told — until now. The quest would pit one of the 20th century’s most talented archaeologists — a woman — against top Vatican insiders. The Fisherman’s Tomb is a story of the triumph of faith and genius against all odds.

SUMMARY:Why Liberalism Failed
DESCRIPTION:Has liberalism failed because it has succeeded? \nOf the three dominant ideologies of the twentieth century—fascism\, communism\, and liberalism—only the last remains. This has created a peculiar situation in which liberalism’s proponents tend to forget that it is an ideology and not the natural end-state of human political evolution. As Patrick Deneen argues in this provocative book\, liberalism is built on a foundation of contradictions: it trumpets equal rights while fostering incomparable material inequality; its legitimacy rests on consent\, yet it discourages civic commitments in favor of privatism; and in its pursuit of individual autonomy\, it has given rise to the most far-reaching\, comprehensive state system in human history. Here\, Deneen offers an astringent warning that the centripetal forces now at work on our political culture are not superficial flaws but inherent features of a system whose success is generating its own failure.

SUMMARY:A Woman Who Made the World Better: Remembering Kate O’Beirne
DESCRIPTION:When Kate O’Beirne died\, tributes to her that appeared in numerous publications including National Review\, set in motion many examinations of conscience. What is the legacy we leave behind as Catholics in the public square? Is it a focus on faith and family\, excellence\, and being present to everyone who crosses your path? Many cited Kate as a model and inspiration for women\, in a particular way\, in the world today – especially those who know and love their faith and want to share it naturally and joyfully\, attracting others to it. \n

SUMMARY:The Hillbilly Thomists
DESCRIPTION:What is a Hillbilly Thomist?\n\n\nIn 1955\, the southern author Flannery O’Connor said of herself\, “Everybody who has read Wise Blood thinks I’m a hillbilly nihilist\, whereas. . .I’m a hillbilly Thomist.” She said that her fiction was concerned with the ways grace is at work among people who do not have access to the sacraments. The Thomist (one who follows the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas) believes that the invisible grace of God can be at work in visible things\, just as the Word became flesh and dwelt among us\, in the person of Christ. \nTraditional bluegrass music is playful and energetic; along with American folk music\, it often contains explicitly theological themes: belief in Christ\, the goodness of life\, the pain of unrequited love\, the finality of death\, and hope in eternal life. It is a traditional southern form of testimony to the presence of grace in the human heart. So when it is played by Dominicans who study Thomas Aquinas\, there is no doubt that what comes about as a result is Hillbilly Thomism. \n\n

SUMMARY:Science and Religion: The Myth of Conflict
DESCRIPTION:Stephen Barr\, President of The Society of Catholic Scientists\, discusses the unique relationship between faith and science and highlights how his organization combats this myth. \n\nThe Society of Catholic Scientists is an international lay organization founded in June of 2016 to foster fellowship among Catholic scientists and to witness to the harmony of faith and  reason. \nThe Society hopes to answer the call of Pope St. John Paul II that ‘members of the Church who are active scientists’ be of service to those who are attempting to ‘integrate the worlds of science and religion in their own intellectual and spiritual lives.’ The Society will do this through annual conferences\, symposia and seminars\, discussion groups\, lectures\, and other activities. \nIn its first year\, the SCS grew to 500 members. Nearly a hundred scientists attended its inaugural conference in April\, 2017\, along with theologians\, philosophers\, and historians. \nThe Society also provides opportunities for Catholic undergraduates\, graduate students\, and postdoctoral researchers in the natural sciences to get to know and interact with more senior colleagues. In this way the Society hopes to provide role models and mentors for young Catholics who are on the way to possible careers in science. \nTheir core mission is: \n\nTo foster fellowship among Catholic scientists.\nTo witness to the harmony between the vocation of scientist and the life of faith.\nTo be a forum for reflection upon and discussion of questions concerning the relation of science and the Catholic faith.\nTo act as a resource for Catholic educators\, pastors\, and lay people\, and for journalists and members of the general public who have questions about the significance of scientific theories and discoveries and about the relation of science and faith.

SUMMARY:Before & After Google: Tips for Discussing Pro-Life Issues with Non-Catholics
DESCRIPTION:In 2017\, Stephanie was a presenter for the series “Talks at Google\,” speaking on abortion at Google headquarters in Mountain View\, California. There she applied the Socratic method and storytelling to the debate surrounding abortion. She invited the audience to be “pro-conversation” on a topic that can be one of the most divisive\, and demonstrated that it is possible to be gracious and respectful when encountering different ideas. \nJoin us at the CIC as Stephanie shares her insights and experiences of not only how she prepared for this Google talk but how she prepares in general for interacting with the culture\, and offers practical “take aways” for the audience to apply in their own life. She will also incorporate stories of professionals in the world\, going about their daily duties\, who have “won” people around them by their witness. \nVisit her website to learn more about Stephanie and her work.

SUMMARY:When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment
DESCRIPTION:The transgender movement has hit breakneck speed. In the space of a year\, it’s gone from something that most Americans had never heard of to a cause claiming the mantle of civil rights. \nBut can a boy truly be “trapped” in a girl’s body? Can modern medicine really “reassign” sex? Is sex something “assigned” in the first place? What’s the loving response to a friend or child experiencing a gender-identity conflict? What should our law say on these issues? \nWhen Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment provides thoughtful answers to all of these questions. Drawing on the best insights from biology\, psychology\, and philosophy\, Ryan T. Anderson offers a balanced approach to the policy issues\, a nuanced vision of human embodiment\, and a sober and honest survey of the human costs of getting human nature wrong. \nEveryone has something at stake in today’s debates about gender identity. Analyzing education and employment policies\, Obama-era bathroom and locker-room mandates\, politically correct speech codes and religious-freedom violations\, Anderson shows how the law is being used to coerce and penalize those who believe the truth about human nature. And he shows how Americans can begin to push back with principle and prudence\, compassion and grace.
