SUMMARY:The Memoirs of St. Peter: A New Translation of the Gospel According to Mark
DESCRIPTION:The Gospel as You Have Never Heard It Before… \nAt a distance of twenty centuries\, the figure of Jesus of Nazareth can seem impossibly obscure—indeed\, some skeptics even question whether he existed. And yet we have an eyewitness account of his life\, death\, and resurrection from one of his closest companions\, the sherman Simon Bar-Jona\, better known as the Apostle Peter. \nWriters from the earliest days of the Church tell us that Peter’s disciple Mark wrote down the apostle’s account of the life of Jesus as he told it to the first Christians in Rome. The vivid\, detailed\, unadorned prose of the Gospel of Mark conveys the unmistakable immediacy of a first-hand account. \nFor most readers\, however\, this immediacy is hidden behind a veil of Greek\, the language of the New Testament writers. Four centuries of English translations have achieved nobility of cadence or\, more recently\, idiomatic accessibility\, but the voice of Peter himself has never fully emerged. Until now. \nIn this strikingly original translation\, atten- tive to Peter’s concern to show what it was like to be there\, Michael Pakaluk captures the tone and texture of the sherman’s evocative account\, leading the reader to a bracing new encounter with Jesus. \nThe accompanying verse-by-verse commentary—less theological than historical—will equip you to experience Mark’s Gospel as the narrative of an eyewitness\, drawing you into its scenes\, where you will come to know Jesus of Nazareth with new intimacy. \nA stunning work of scholarship readily accessible to the layman\, The Memoirs of St. Peter belongs on the bookshelf of every serious Christian.

SUMMARY:Death\, Judgment\, Heaven\, and Hell: Sayings of the Fathers of the Church
DESCRIPTION:Nothing has the power to inspire\, or terrify us like the unknown. Life after death is the perhaps the greatest unknown that confronts mankind. But the wisdom of the Church\, especially in the teachings of the Church Fathers\, reminds us that we know a great deal about what awaits us at the end of life. \nWhat the Church knows about the four last things―death judgment\, heaven\, and hell―is essential for helping on the way of the pilgrimage of life. The teachings of the Fathers\, far from sating our curiosity\, serve to increase the power of heaven to inspire us\, and of hell to terrify. \nIn this volume\, canon lawyer and writer Edward Condon compiles a book full of wisdom and compelling insights. More than anything\, the Fathers warn us that our life is short\, and the reckoning for how we have lived it eternal. The urgency of the Church’s message\, brought to life in the sayings of the Fathers\, comes to remind us of our true calling and inheritance in baptism\, and of the richness of the heavenly reward\, which is not so much the fruit of our efforts on Earth but the fulfillment of God’s promise of love to us. The terror of hell is not the threat of the dictator\, but a dire warning of the true scope of our freedom as children of God. \nThis book\, rich with the traditional teachings of the church\, will guide and inspire readers as they continue their life journeys\, which have a beginning but no end.

SUMMARY:Sunday Will Never Be the Same: A Rock & Roll Journalist Opens Her Ears to God
DESCRIPTION:Love and beauty. From when she was a little girl\, Dawn Eden Goldstein knew she wanted those things that in them\, somehow\, she would find God. But her life s search led her away from the temples of her childhood Judaism to the music clubs of Greenwich Village\, where she became an acolyte of a new religion: rock & roll. Over the years she earned renown as a rock critic and historian\, moving among some of popular music’s biggest names\, all the while straining to capture that transcendent love and beauty in their every note and lyric. \n\nYet her longing only deepened; the hole in her heart only grew. God s voice was calling her\, but first\, she needed ears to hear.\n\n\n\nIn Sunday Will Never Be the Same\, Goldstein (The Thrill of the Chaste) recounts her spiritual journey in beautifully wrought detail\, mixing powerful accounts of trauma\, healing\, and epiphany with funny and poignant anecdotes from inside the music scene. It is the rare conversion story that delights as it inspires\, amuses as it edifies and ultimately lays before the reader a lived testimony to the transforming grace of Christ.

SUMMARY:Alienated America
DESCRIPTION:Respected conservative journalist and commentator Timothy P. Carney continues the conversation begun with Hillbilly Elegy and the classic Bowling Alone in this hard-hitting analysis that identifies the true factor behind the decline of the American dream: it is not purely the result of economics as the left claims\, but the collapse of the institutions that made us successful\, including marriage\, church\, and civic life. \nDuring the 2016 presidential campaign\, Donald J. Trump proclaimed\, “the American dream is dead\,” and this message resonated across the country. \nWhy do so many people believe that the American dream is no longer within reach? Growing inequality\, stubborn pockets of immobility\, rising rates of deadly addiction\, the increasing and troubling fact that where you start determines where you end up\, heightening political strife—these are the disturbing realities threatening ordinary American lives today. \nThe standard accounts pointed to economic problems among the working class\, but the root was a cultural collapse: While the educated and wealthy elites still enjoy strong communities\, most blue-collar Americans lack strong communities and institutions that bind them to their neighbors. And outside of the elites\, the central American institution has been religion \nThat is\, it’s not the factory closings that have torn us apart; it’s the church closings. The dissolution of our most cherished institutions—nuclear families\, places of worship\, civic organizations—has not only divided us\, but eroded our sense of worth\, belief in opportunity\, and connection to one another. \nIn Alienated America\, Carney visits all corners of America\, from the dim country bars of Southwestern Pennsylvania.\, to the bustling Mormon wards of Salt Lake City\, and explains the most important data and research to demonstrate how the social connection is the great divide in America. He shows that Trump’s surprising victory was the most visible symptom of this deep-seated problem. In addition to his detailed exploration of how a range of societal changes have\, in tandem\, damaged us\, Carney provides a framework that will lead us back out of a lonely\, modern wilderness.

SUMMARY:From Fire by Water: My Journey to the Catholic Faith
DESCRIPTION:Sohrab Ahmari was a teenager living under the Iranian ayatollahs when he decided that there is no God. Nearly two decades later\, he would be received into the Roman Catholic Church. \nIn From Fire\, by Water\, he recounts this unlikely passage\, from the strident Marxism and atheism of a youth misspent on both sides of the Atlantic to a moral and spiritual awakening prompted by the Mass. At once a young intellectual’s finely crafted self-portrait and a life story at the intersection of the great ideas and events of our time\, the book marks the debut of a compelling new Catholic voice. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Author:\nSohrab Ahmari is the op-ed editor of the New York Post and a contributing editor of the Catholic Herald. Previously\, he served as a columnist and editor with the Wall Street Journal opinion pages in New York and London\, and as senior writer at Commentary magazine. His work has also been published in the New York Times\, the Times Literary Supplement\, the Chronicle of Higher Education\, the Weekly Standard\, First Things\, Dissent and America\, among many other publications. Ahmari is also the author of The New Philistines: How Identity Politics Disfigure the Arts. \n\nReviews:\n“Sohrab Ahmari is emerging as one of the finest minds and writers of his generation\, and the story of his conversion recounted here will stay with the reader for a very long time.”\n— Archbishop Charles J. Chaput\, from the Foreword \n“From Fire\, By Water is not so much about Sohrab Ahmari but about the work of divine grace in his soul disposed to hear God’s voice calling him with immeasurable and enduring love. It is the story of the journey of faith in which it is always God Who first calls us to believe in Him and place all our trust in Him. The same humility before God\, which disposed the author to respond to God’s call\, permits him to give a most compelling and indeed inspiring account of how He came to know God\, to love Him and to serve Him with all his heart. The author’s extraordinary gift for writing truly approaches\, as best as one can at any given time\, a true account of the incomparable beauty of the reality he recounts.”\n— Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke \n“Relentlessly honest\, deeply moving\, Sohrab Ahmari’s story of his intellectual and spiritual journey from dismissive disbelief to vibrant Catholic faith—a journey propelled by some intriguing companions\, including Nietzsche\, Camus\, and Koestler—is food for both mind and soul and an important testimony to the invigorating power of truth.”\n— George Weigel\, Author\, Witness to Hope and The End and the Beginning \n“This book is a testimony of Eucharistic triumph. God seeks us and will transform us if we let Him. Sohrab Ahmari’s beautiful memoir will help all of us trust in God alone better.”\n— Kathryn Jean Lopez\, Editor-at-Large of National Review \n“Memoirs written by people who are still in their thirties are almost never of interest to anyone. Sohrab Ahmari’s\, however\, is a grand exception. It’s a gripping account of the fascinating life of someone who was born to a liberal family in post-revolutionary Iran\, migrated to the United States where he and his mother lived among Mormons in Utah\, made a series of bad choices\, and found his way to political conservatism and a career in journalism\, and wrestled with God—unsuccessfully—to stay out of the Catholic Church.”\n— Robert P. George\, McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence\, Princeton University

SUMMARY:The Enchanted Hour
DESCRIPTION:A Wall Street Journal writer’s conversation-changing look at how reading aloud makes adults and children smarter\, happier\, healthier\, more successful and more closely attached\, even as technology pulls in the other direction. \nA miraculous alchemy occurs when one person reads to another\, transforming the simple stuff of a book\, a voice\, and a bit of time into complex and powerful fuel for the heart\, brain\, and imagination. Grounded in the latest neuroscience and behavioral research\, and drawing widely from literature\, The Enchanted Hour explains the dazzling cognitive and social-emotional benefits that await children\, whatever their class\, nationality or family background. But it’s not just about bedtime stories for little kids: Reading aloud consoles\, uplifts and invigorates at every age\, deepening the intellectual lives and emotional well-being of teenagers and adults\, too. \nMeghan Cox Gurdon argues that this ancient practice is a fast-working antidote to the fractured attention spans\, atomized families and unfulfilling ephemera of the tech era\, helping to replenish what our devices are leaching away. For everyone\, reading aloud engages the mind in complex narratives; for children\, it’s an irreplaceable gift that builds vocabulary\, fosters imagination\, and kindles a lifelong appreciation of language\, stories and pictures. \nBringing together the latest scientific research\, practical tips\, and reading recommendations\, The Enchanted Hour will both charm and galvanize\, inspiring readers to share this invaluable\, life-altering tradition with the people they love most.

SUMMARY:The God That Did Not Fail: How Religion Built and Sustains the West
DESCRIPTION:The CIC was excited to welcome Robert Royal to discuss his book\, “The God That Did Not Fail: How Religion Built and Sustains the West.” This book is the first CIC book group pick of 2019! The CIC book group is managed by Linda Formella and Milton Grenfell.  The group meets weekly at the CIC on Thursday from 12:45pm-1:30pm. Be sure to pick up your copy of “The God That Did Not Fail: How Religion Built and Sustains the West” at the CIC today. \nSecular humanists and other “progressives” have been predicting the demise of religion for the past 250 years. But they keep running into a problem: those who were supposed to be liberated by the secular gospel that God is Dead aren’t buying it. Except for some parts of western Europe and in countries culturally destroyed by Communism\, secularization in the radical sense has not occurred. \nWhile it has not obliterated the religious impulse\, however\, the drive towards “progressive irreligion” has\, Robert Royal believes\, encouraged ignorance of religion’s central role in the development of the West. In The God That Did Not Fail\, Royal offers an original reading of religion in ancient Greece and Rome\, of Christianity and Judaism\, the Middle Ages\, the Renaissance and Reformation\, the several modern Enlightenments\, culminating with a profound assessment of our current postmodern moment. He concludes that since religion is a permanent part of human nature and of the particular character of the West\, our efforts should be directed not into a quixotic effort to deny the undeniable\, especially as we face challenges from Islamic fundamentalism\, but into promoting a well thought out and dynamic interplay of faith\, reason\, and modern freedoms.

SUMMARY:Mind\, Heart\, and Soul: Intellectuals and the Path to Rome
DESCRIPTION:In a series of fascinating interviews\, a cradle Catholic (Robert P. George) and an adult convert (R. J. Snell)\, offer the stories of sixteen converts\, each a public intellectual or leading voice in their respective fields\, and each making a significant contribution to the life of the Church. \nMind\, Heart\, and Soul is a Surprised by Truth for a new generation. It will reinvigorate the faith of Catholics and answer questions or address hurdles those discerning entering the Church may have…by people have had the same questions and the same road \nWhile some of the converts are well-known\, their stories are not. Here they speak for themselves\, providing the reasons for belief that prompted these accomplished men and women to embrace the ancient faith. \nIncluded are interviews with a bishop\, a leading theologian and priest\, a member of the International Theological Commission\, a former megachurch pastor\, a prominent pro-life scholar\, professors from Harvard and other universities\, as well as journalists and writers\, novelists and scholars. Each are interviewed by another leading scholar\, many of whom are themselves converts and familiar with the hesitations\, anxieties\, discoveries\, and hopes of those who discover the Faith. \nThese conversion stories remind us that the Catholic Church retains her vitality\, able to provide answers and reasons for hope to new generations of believers\, always sustained by the Holy Spirit. It is all too-easy to become discouraged in our day and age\, but God never fails to call people to Himself\, as evidenced by these remarkable stories. \n[button type=”simple_button_link” url=”https://www.cicdc.org/th_gallery/mind-heart-and-soul-intellectuals-and-the-path-to-rome/” target=”” button_color_fon=”#d79b4b” ]Watch Video of Event[/button] \n\nAbout the speakers:\nRobert P. George holds Princeton’s celebrated McCormick Chair in Jurisprudence and is the Director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions. He has served as chairman of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom\, and before that on the President’s Council on Bioethics and as a presidential appointee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights. SUMMARY:Tales That Tell: Moral Devastation & Original Sin in Literature (Pt. 3)
DESCRIPTION:The Catastrophe of the Self: Walker Percy on Sin and Transcendence\nThroughout his writings\, Walker Percy explores modern man’s catastrophic failure to understand who he is. This talk will explain Percy’s diagnosis of this catastrophe–its nature and causes–and various false avenues of escaping it.  We will pay particular attention to how Percy’s understanding of the spiritual crisis of modernity–a crisis of self-knowledge– plays out in his science fiction novel\, Love in the Ruins.

SUMMARY:Crafts and Storytime
DESCRIPTION:Schedule:\n10:30am-Reading of “Boxes for Katjie” for ages 8-12 and arts and craft activity for ages 2-7 \n11:00am-Reading of “Sarah and Simon and No Red Paint” for ages 2-7 and arts and crafts activity for ages 8-12 \n11:30am-Lunch (Chick-fil-A) \n1:00pm-Event Ends \n“Boxes for Katje” by Candace Flemming\nIn May 1945\, a Dutch girl named Katje is thrilled to receive a letter and a package of socks\, soap\, and chocolate from Rosie\, a girl she doesn’t know who lives in Mayfield\, Indiana. The kids start to exchange letters\, and when Rosie’s family members learn of Holland’s severe post-war deprivations\, they enlist Mayfield residents to send food and clothes to Katje\, who generously shares the gifts with others in her community. The sense of suffering isn’t strong here\, in part because the Dutch townspeople are almost always depicted as smiling about the packages. But the story is still moving\, and Dressen-McQueen’s lively illustrations\, in colored pencil\, oil pastel\, and acrylic\, pack lots of color\, pattern\, and historical details onto every expansive page. Fleming based the book on her mother’s experience\, which she describes in an author’s note; in the real-life story\, however\, adults\, not children\, orchestrated the events\, a finding that may be a little disappointing to kids who took the book\, with its specific dates\, town names\, and heroic\, generous children\, as straight fact. \n  \n“Sarah and Simon and No Red Paint” by Edward Ardizzone\nFrom the distinguished author-illustrator of the maritime Tim series and winner of the Kate Greenaway medal comes this classic picture book that was recommended to our editor by a children’s bookseller in Princeton\, NJ. Please find out if Sarah and Simon and No Red Paint is still in print\, she implored\, and if it is not\, please do all you can to publish it. With some difficulty\, we procured the book\, which was indeed out of print\, read it\, and fell in love. \nHere is the story of two children\, Sarah and Simon\, whose father is a painter\, and who live with their parents and baby brother in a big room called a Studio. Their father is talented but unacknowledged\, and so the family is poor\, though very happy. When the story opens\, the father is painting his masterpiece. Sarah and Simon are good little helpers and spend their time doing chores and visiting their favorite place in town: the old second-hand bookshop with its kind owner. Soon the masterpiece is almost finished\, except for the bit of red paint needed to complete it\, and even the dealer agrees to buy it if it were finished the next day. But there is no more red paint\, and no more money left with which to buy it. So Sarah and Simon set out to help their father\, and to their surprise\, end up reconciling their family with an estranged uncle and restoring the family fortune as well all with the help and kind solicitation of the bookshop owner… \nGodine is proud to bring this classic with its detailed line drawings and delicate watercolor illustrations back into print\, and our thanks to the good bookshop buyer who came to the rescue of this wonderful book.

SUMMARY:Confronting the Crisis of Faith and Reason: Reclaiming Authentic Catholic Education
DESCRIPTION:Panelists explore the pernicious effects of secular progressive education\, and its infiltration of Catholic schools. By examining the nature and purpose of Catholic education and its roots in the classical liberal arts tradition\, the panel will recognize how neglect of our own tradition undermines both faith and reason in our children. A dynamic renewal\, however\, is transforming and inspiring a growing number of Catholic schools who are reclaiming the Church’s tradition.

SUMMARY:Building the Benedict Option
DESCRIPTION:Building the Benedict Option is a combination spiritual memoir and practical handbook for Christians who want to build communities of prayer\, socialization\, and evangelization in the places where they live and work. \nBeginning when the author was a new convert\, she desired more communal prayer and fellowship than weekly Mass could provide. She surveyed her friends–busy\, young\, urban professionals like herself–and created enriching or supportive experiences that matched their desires and schedules. The result was a less lonely and more boisterous spiritual and social life. \nNo Catholic Martha Stewart\, Libresco is frank about how she plans events that allow her to feed thirty people on a Friday night without feeling exhausted. She is honest about the obstacles to prayer and the challenge to make it inviting and unobtrusive. Above all\, she communicates the joy she has experienced since discovering ways to open her home (even when it was only a small studio apartment). \nThe reader will close this book with four or five ideas for events to try over the next few weeks\, along with the tools to make them fruitful. From film nights to picnics in the park to resume-writing evenings\, there are plenty of ideas to choose from and loads of encouragement to make more room in one’s life for others.

SUMMARY:A Catechism for Family Life: Insights from Catholic Teaching on Love\, Marriage\, Sex\, and Parenting
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of A Catechism for Family Life: Insights from Church Teaching on Love\, Marriage\, Sex\, and Parenting is to present the teachings of the Catholic Church as they relate to specific questions in marriage and family life. Many Catholics are under-catechized and have trouble both understanding and articulating Church teaching on sexuality and marriage to an increasingly challenging culture. Pope Francis\, along with the fathers of the two recent Synods on the Family\, have called for better formation for those who work in the area of marriage and family life (see Amoris Laetitia\, 202). \nTo address this need\, we gathered pertinent questions facing men\, women\, and pastoral workers in marriage and family life. We then found passages relevant to these questions by researching Church documents on marriage and family from the past one hundred years. These include papal encyclicals\, apostolic exhortations\, and addresses\, Vatican II documents\, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. \nMainstream media coverage of Church events and Church teaching leads many to misunderstand Catholic positions on marriage and family life. While the Catholic Church has developed a rich\, detailed\, and positive teaching on marriage\, family\, and sexuality\, many Catholics do not have access to this teaching\, buried as it is in lengthy Church documents which many find intimidating. Finding the relevant teaching to address specific questions is not always a simple task\, either. This book’s main contribution is to present Church teaching relevant to marriage and family in one volume clearly organized by topic and question. \nBook available for purchase at the CIC.

SUMMARY:Tales That Tell: Moral Devastation & Original Sin in Literature (Pt. 2)
DESCRIPTION:Out of This Stony Rubbish: Devastation and Rebirth in Eliot’s The Waste Land\nMore than any other work of high modernist literature\, Eliot’s The Waste Land (1922) captures the loss of meaning and purpose that has overwhelmed an entire civilization. Surrounded by fragments of past knowledge that now seem barely intelligible in the wake of World War I\, modern society appears mired in an unprecedented spiritual crisis. Yet unlike his modernist peers (e.g.\, Virginia Woolf\, Bertrand Russell\, Ezra Pound\, et al.)\, Eliot’s critique of modern life is not confined to the conceptual resources and secular axioms that have shaped modern life. Though it predates Eliot’s “conversion” to Christianity by five years\, The Waste Land‘s forceful summation of spiritual\, ecological\, psycho-sexual\, and moral devastation already contains the seeds for the spiritual awakening that will be at the center of Eliot’s “Ash Wednesday” (1927) and his Four Quartets (1936-1943). \n

SUMMARY:When Women Pray: Healing and Hope for the Church in Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Kathleen Beckman asked eleven women to write about their experiences with the power of prayer “to strengthen an army of praying women united for the many spiritual and temporal needs of the human family.” None of us have any doubt these days that the need is great — and in our beloved Church too\, as so many of us are shaken by the scandalous news of this summer. Kathryn Jean Lopez\, one of the eleven chapter authors\, discusses the urgency for women to “save the peace of the world\,” as recent popes have put it\, in loving\, fervent\, prayerful intercession. \nKathleen and Kathryn will discuss practical ways to become “contemplatives in action” for “such a time as this” (Esther 4:14). \nKathleen Beckman is co-founder of the Foundation of Prayer for Priests and author of When Women Pray and Praying for Priests (a second edition of which is being released this Fall). Kathryn Jean Lopez is senior fellow at the National Review Institute where she directs the Center for Religion\, Culture\, and Civil Society and editor-at-large of National Review.

SUMMARY:Tales That Tell: Moral Devastation & Original Sin in Literature (Pt. 1)
DESCRIPTION:Forgiveness and Solidarity in Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov\nFyodor Dostoevsky’s last and greatest novel\, The Brothers Karamazov\, explores the question of God’s existence against the backdrop of suffering and betrayal within a troubled family. The genius of Dostoevsky is to have grasped that there can be no love for human beings without a love for God — and conversely\, there can be no belief in God without a deep and profound love for mankind. Prof. Healy will present a brief overview of the structure and characters of the novel\, focusing on the themes of solidarity and forgiveness. \n

SUMMARY:The Human Advantage: The Future of American Work in an Age of Smart Machines
DESCRIPTION:Bestselling author and economist Jay W. Richards makes the definitive case for how the free market and individual responsibility can save the American Dream in an age of automation and mass disruption. \nFor two and a half centuries\, America has been held together by the belief that if you work hard and conduct yourself responsibly in this country\, you will be able to prosper and leave a better life for your children. But over the past decade\, that idea has come into crisis. A recession\, the mass outsourcing of stable jobs\, and a coming wave of automation that will replace millions of blue- and white-collar jobs alike have left many people worried that the game is rigged and that our best days are behind us. \nIn this story-driven manifesto on the future of American work\, Jay Richards argues that such thinking is counterproductive–making us more fragile\, more dependent\, and less equipped to succeed in a rapidly changing economy. If we’re going to survive\, we need a new model for how ordinary people can thrive in this age of mass disruption. Richards pulls back the curtain on what’s really happening in our economy\, dispatching myths about capitalism\, greed\, and upward mobility. And he tells the stories of how real individuals have begun to rebuild a culture of virtue\, capitalizing on the skills that are most uniquely human: creativity\, resilience\, and empathy for the needs of others. \nDestined to take its place alongside classics like Economics in One Lesson\, The Human Advantage is the essential book for understanding the future of American work\, and how each of us can make this era of staggering change work on our behalf. \nBooks available for purchase at the CIC.

SUMMARY:Why Israel Matters: A Theological Perspective
DESCRIPTION:The re-emergence of Israel as a nation-state caught the world by surprise and continues to trouble it deeply. That Israel matters geo-politically cannot be doubted\, but does it matter theologically? Is there a place for Israel\, as there is for Jews\, in Christian eschatology? \nCo-sponsored with the Thomistic Institute and The Philos Project. \n \n  \n  \n \n\nDouglas Farrow is Professor of Theology and Christian Thought\, and sometime holder of the Kennedy Smith Chair in Catholic Studies\, at McGill University in Montreal. He has lectured and published widely in North America and Europe on moral\, doctrinal\, and political subjects. Among his recent works are Ascension Theology\, Desiring a Better Country\, and the forthcoming Theological Negotiations.  Professor Farrow is a member of the Academy of Catholic Theology and a frequent contributor to First Things.
