SUMMARY:A Year With the Mystics: Visionary Wisdom for Daily Living
DESCRIPTION:There’s so much noise. Everything can seem like a distraction. Distraction\, in fact\, seems our oxygen. When was the last time you saw people talking on an elevator? We seem to plug in everywhere. We have earphones and screens and don’t evenlook up\, never mind find time for silence. Our hearts need quiet. How are we ever going to pray otherwise? How could we ever possibly know God’s love and will\, and the truth about ourselves and the world without resting in Him? \nResting in Him. What does that even mean? In A Year with the Mystics\, popular National Review journalist and commentator Kathryn Jean Lopez\, who writes and speaks frequently about faith and public life\, and prayer and the Church\, offers readers a tour of the magnificent variety of mystical writing in the heart of the Church. Featuring reflections from both household and contemporary names like Saint John Paul II\, Mother Teresa and Edith Stein\, as well as titanic historic figures such as St. Catherine of Siena and John of the Cross. The words of these holy men and women of prayer are presented in accessible doses ideal for daily prayer amidst the seemingly all-consuming busy-ness of life. \nEach page is an invitation to enter more deeply into the life of faith. What does the road to union with God look like? What is a dark night? What is true love of the Trinity? What is this Church as bridegroom business? \nMysticism is not some foreign and remote life of prayer for poets and saints in heaven; rather\, it is the call for every Christian to draw more deeply and profoundly from the heart of Christ in prayer. \nA Year with the Mystics is a tour\, a retreat\, and a love story in which God seeks you out. With the small commitment of a few minutes a day to prayer with mystic saints and other holy ones\, you will be making time for communication and peace in the heart of the Trinity. Your faith will grow and you will see that the life of a contemplative in the world can be yours; it can become for you the air you breathe and a wellspring of renewal in your life as a Catholic\, rooted in the sacraments. \nThis beautiful Premium UltraSoft gift edition features two-tone sewn binding\, ribbon marker\, gold edges\, and designed interior pages. \nBook signing and reception to follow the lecture.

SUMMARY:Resisting Throwaway Culture
DESCRIPTION:This is a book about hope in the midst of a polarized culture. Camosy begins with a hopeful starting point in the midst of a crumbling US political culture: two of every three Americans constitute an exhausted majority who reject right/left polarization and are open to alternative viewpoints. Especially at this time of realignment\, we have been given a unique moment to put aside the frothy\, angsty political debates and think harder about our deepest values. \nA Consistent Life Ethic\, especially one which embraces Pope Francis’ challenge to resist throwaway culture\, has the capacity to unite people who for the last several decades imagined themselves in a polarized culture war. \nOn issues ranging from hook-up culture\, reproductive technology\, abortion\, euthanasia\, poverty\, immigration\, treatment of animals\, and mass incarceration\, this book articulates a new moral vision in which a culture of encounter and hospitality replaces a consumer culture in which the most vulnerable get used and discarded as so much trash. At bottom\, Camosy offers readers a golden opportunity to dialogue about what kinds of values should serve as the foundation for a new political culture. \nBook signing and reception to follow the lecture.

SUMMARY:Life\, Religious Liberty\, and the Survival of Catholic Health Care
DESCRIPTION:The protection of the unborn\, religious freedom and the survival of Catholic health care will be largely determined by the outcome of the ongoing national debate on the American health care system.  Certain legislative proposals would place the government at the center of healthcare instead of the patient (and their relationship with God) thereby significantly reducing patient freedom and control in their own healthcare.  How does Church teaching inform Catholics and people of goodwill to evaluate these policies?  What can I do to defend religious freedom and protect Catholic healthcare?  The Christ Medicus Foundation and the Catholic Information Center invite you to join this amazing evening that will include a panel discussion moderated by EWTN’s Catherine Hadro and a wine reception to follow.

SUMMARY:Freedom Beyond Civility: Providing the Better Answers to Today’s Social Questions
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be truly free? Is it merely a matter of exercising our rights and resisting coercion? Or is it something more? This four-part series aims to illumine the freedom Christ promises in the life of grace\, and to discern how this be lived out in today’s world. \nThis event is free\, open to the public\, and will be followed by a reception with light refreshments.

SUMMARY:Primal Screams: How the Sexual Revolution Created Identity Politics
DESCRIPTION:Who am I? The question today haunts every society in the Western world.   \nLegions of people—especially the young—have become unmoored from a firm sense of self. To compensate\, they join the ranks of ideological tribes spawned by identity politics and react with frenzy against any perceived threat to their group. As identitarians track and expose the ideologically impure\, other citizens face the consequences of their rancor: a litany of “isms” run amok across all levels of cultural life; the free marketplace of ideas muted by agendas shouted through megaphones\, and a spirit of general goodwill warped into a state of perpetual outrage. \nHow did we get here? Why have we divided against one another so bitterly? In Primal Screams\, acclaimed cultural critic Mary Eberstadt presents the most provocative and original theory to come along in recent years. The rise of identity politics\, she argues\, is a direct result of the fallout of the sexual revolution\, especially the collapse and shrinkage of the family. \nAs Eberstadt illustrates\, humans from time immemorial have forged their identities within the structure of kinship. The extended family\, in a real sense\, is the first tribe and first teacher. But with its unprecedented decline across a variety of measures\, generations of people have been set adrift and can no longer answer the question Who am I? with reference to primordial ties. Desperate for solidarity and connection\, they claim membership in politicized groups whose displays of frantic irrationalism amount to primal screams for familial and communal loss. \nWritten in her impeccable style and with empathy rarely encountered in today’s divisive discourse\, Eberstadt’s theory holds immense explanatory power that no serious citizen can afford to ignore. The book concludes with three incisive essays by Rod Dreher\, Mark Lilla\, and Peter Thiel\, each sharing their perspective on the author’s formidable argument. \nBook signing and reception to follow the lecture.

SUMMARY:The Soul of an American President: The Untold Story of Dwight D. Eisenhower's Faith
DESCRIPTION:While there have been many biographies of Dwight D. Eisenhower that focus on his military career or the time of his presidency\, none clearly explores the important role faith played both in his personal life and in his public policy. This despite the fact that he is the only US president to be baptized as a Christian while in office. \nThe book invites you on a journey that is unique in American history and is essential to understanding one of the most consequential\, admired\, and complex Americans of the 20th Century. The story begins in abject poverty in rural Texas\, then travels through Kansas\, West Point\, two World Wars\, and down Pennsylvania Avenue. This is the untold story of a man whose growing faith sustained him through the loss of a young son\, marital difficulties\, depression\, career disappointments\, and being witness to some of the worst atrocities humankind has devised. A man whose faith was based in his own sincere personal conviction\, not out of a sense of political expediency or social obligation. \nYou’ve met Dwight Eisenhower the soldier and Dwight Eisenhower the president. Now meet Dwight Eisenhower the man of faith. \nReception and book signing to follow the event.

SUMMARY:On Faith: Lessons from an American Believer
DESCRIPTION:On Faith is an inspiring collection of the late Supreme Court justice Antonin Scalia’s reflections on his own faith\, on the challenges that religious believers face in modern America\, and on the religious freedoms protected by the Constitution. Featuring a personal introduction by Justice Scalia’s son Father Paul Scalia\, this volume will enrich every reader’s understanding of the legendary justice. \nAntonin Scalia reflected deeply on matters of religion and shared his insights with many audiences over the course of his remarkable career. As a Supreme Court justice for three decades\, he vigorously defended the American constitutional tradition of allowing religion a prominent place in the public square. As a man of faith\, he recognized the special challenges of living a distinctively religious life in modern America\, and he inspired other believers to meet those challenges. \nThis volume contains Justice Scalia’s incisive thoughts on these matters\, laced with his characteristic wit. It includes outstanding speeches featured in Scalia Speaks and also draws from his Supreme Court opinions and his articles. In addition to the introduction by Fr. Scalia\, other highlights include Fr. Scalia’s beautiful homily at his father’s funeral Mass and reminiscences from various friends and law clerks whose lives were influenced by Antonin Scalia’s faith. \nMr. Scalia and Mr. Whelan previously co-edited Scalia Speaks: Reflections on Law\, Faith\, and Life Well Lived (Crown Forum\, 2017)\, a New York Times bestselling collection of Justice Scalia’s speeches. You can watch their talk on this book at the CIC here.

SUMMARY:Sermons in Times of Crisis: Twelve Homilies to Stir Your Soul
DESCRIPTION:The Catholic Church today finds itself in the midst of a crisis. The flock is scattering\, and while some shepherds bravely set off in search of those lost and wandering sheep\, others drive them\, and many more\, further from the fold. \nBut the Church has seen and weathered numerous crises in its two millennia\, and always one or more of its priests and bishops stood up and rallied the faithful: whether to rebuke an Emperor or oppose a policy\, encourage the faithful or defend the faith\, bishops and priests ascended the pulpit and delivered sermons that met the pressing needs of their own times\, sermons which should be read and remembered by Catholics of all times. You will find comfort within these pages as you read the words of these heroic pastors of souls including: \nSt Ambrose of Milan\, St Augustine\, St John Chrysostom\, St Edmund Campion\, Pope St John Paul II \, . . . and seven others. \nEnter into the minds and thoughts of some of the bravest\, most eloquent\, homilists the Church has produced. More than one was killed for the words they uttered which you will find in these pages. But they counted not the cost. \nGuided by Rev. Paul D. Scalia’s introduction and commentaries\, you will come to see that the Church has faced crises and survived\, even thrived\, before. In fact\, it is one of the marks of her authenticity\, as it has often been said\, that no mere human institution could have survived the persecutions and scandals that the Catholic Church has withstood over 2000 years. \nIf you are a priest or bishop\, just maybe reading these words of men not unlike yourself\, will inspire you to stand and be counted and preach God’s word from the pulpit without counting the cost.

SUMMARY:The Heart of Perfection: How the Saints Taught Me to Trade My Dream of Perfect for God's
DESCRIPTION:An award-winning author\, former presidential speechwriter\, and mother of four weaves stories of her own struggles against comparison and impossible expectations with those of seven ex-perfectionist saints (and one heretic) who show us how to pursue a new kind of perfection: freedom in Christ. \nSpiritual perfectionism—an obsession with flawlessness rooted in the belief that we can earn God’s love—is the most dangerous form of perfectionism because so many of us mistake it for virtue\, or deny that it afflicts us at all. Its toxic cycle of pride\, sin\, shame\, blame\, and despair distorts our vision\, dulls our faith\, and leads us to view others through the same hypercritical lens we think God is using to view us. \nAs a lifelong overachiever who drafted her first résumé in sixth grade and spell-checked her high-school boyfriend’s love letters\, Colleen Carroll Campbell knows something about the perfectionist trap. But it was only after she became a mother that she started to see how insidiously perfectionism had infected her spiritual life\, how lethal it could be to her happiness and her family\, and how disproportionately it afflicts the people working hardest to serve God. \nIn the ruins of her own perfectionist mistakes\, Colleen dug into Scripture and the lives of the canonized saints for answers. She discovered to her surprise that many holy men and women she once saw as encouraging her perfectionism were\, in fact\, recovering perfectionists. And their grace-fueled victory over this malady—not perfectionist striving—was the key to their heroic virtue and contagious joy. \nIn The Heart of Perfection\, Colleen weaves the stories and wisdom of these saints with Scripture and beautifully crafted tales of her own trial-and-error experiments in applying that wisdom to her life. She introduces us to such saints as Jane de Chantal\, a single mother who conquered her impatience only after her ex-perfectionist friend Saint Francis de Sales convinced her to trade punishing prayer regimens for the tougher discipline of showing gentleness to rude in-laws\, rowdy kids\, and herself. Colleen describes the battle against obsessive guilt that turned timid people-pleaser Alphonsus Liguori into a fearless defender of God’s mercy; the discernment rules that helped Ignatius of Loyola overcome crippling discouragement and distraction; the concern for reputation that almost cost the world the radical witness of Francis of Assisi; and the biblical work-life balance that Benedict of Nursia pioneered after years of driving himself and others too hard—and without surrendering his holy zeal. \nGorgeously written and deeply insightful\, Colleen Carroll Campbell’s The Heart of Perfection shows that the solution to perfectionism is not to squelch our hard-wired desires for excellence but to allow God to purify and redirect them\, by swapping the chains of control and comparison for pursuit of a new kind of perfection: the freedom of the children of God.

SUMMARY:The Memoirs of St. Peter: A New Translation of the Gospel According to Mark
DESCRIPTION:The Gospel as You Have Never Heard It Before… \nAt a distance of twenty centuries\, the figure of Jesus of Nazareth can seem impossibly obscure—indeed\, some skeptics even question whether he existed. And yet we have an eyewitness account of his life\, death\, and resurrection from one of his closest companions\, the sherman Simon Bar-Jona\, better known as the Apostle Peter. \nWriters from the earliest days of the Church tell us that Peter’s disciple Mark wrote down the apostle’s account of the life of Jesus as he told it to the first Christians in Rome. The vivid\, detailed\, unadorned prose of the Gospel of Mark conveys the unmistakable immediacy of a first-hand account. \nFor most readers\, however\, this immediacy is hidden behind a veil of Greek\, the language of the New Testament writers. Four centuries of English translations have achieved nobility of cadence or\, more recently\, idiomatic accessibility\, but the voice of Peter himself has never fully emerged. Until now. \nIn this strikingly original translation\, atten- tive to Peter’s concern to show what it was like to be there\, Michael Pakaluk captures the tone and texture of the sherman’s evocative account\, leading the reader to a bracing new encounter with Jesus. \nThe accompanying verse-by-verse commentary—less theological than historical—will equip you to experience Mark’s Gospel as the narrative of an eyewitness\, drawing you into its scenes\, where you will come to know Jesus of Nazareth with new intimacy. \nA stunning work of scholarship readily accessible to the layman\, The Memoirs of St. Peter belongs on the bookshelf of every serious Christian.

SUMMARY:Death\, Judgment\, Heaven\, and Hell: Sayings of the Fathers of the Church
DESCRIPTION:Nothing has the power to inspire\, or terrify us like the unknown. Life after death is the perhaps the greatest unknown that confronts mankind. But the wisdom of the Church\, especially in the teachings of the Church Fathers\, reminds us that we know a great deal about what awaits us at the end of life. \nWhat the Church knows about the four last things―death judgment\, heaven\, and hell―is essential for helping on the way of the pilgrimage of life. The teachings of the Fathers\, far from sating our curiosity\, serve to increase the power of heaven to inspire us\, and of hell to terrify. \nIn this volume\, canon lawyer and writer Edward Condon compiles a book full of wisdom and compelling insights. More than anything\, the Fathers warn us that our life is short\, and the reckoning for how we have lived it eternal. The urgency of the Church’s message\, brought to life in the sayings of the Fathers\, comes to remind us of our true calling and inheritance in baptism\, and of the richness of the heavenly reward\, which is not so much the fruit of our efforts on Earth but the fulfillment of God’s promise of love to us. The terror of hell is not the threat of the dictator\, but a dire warning of the true scope of our freedom as children of God. \nThis book\, rich with the traditional teachings of the church\, will guide and inspire readers as they continue their life journeys\, which have a beginning but no end.

But her life s search led her away from the temples of her childhood Judaism to the music clubs of Greenwich Village\, where she became an acolyte of a new religion: rock & roll. Over the years she earned renown as a rock critic and historian\, moving among some of popular music’s biggest names\, all the while straining to capture that transcendent love and beauty in their every note and lyric. \n\nYet her longing only deepened; the hole in her heart only grew. God s voice was calling her\, but first\, she needed ears to hear.\n\n\n\nIn Sunday Will Never Be the Same\, Goldstein (The Thrill of the Chaste) recounts her spiritual journey in beautifully wrought detail\, mixing powerful accounts of trauma\, healing\, and epiphany with funny and poignant anecdotes from inside the music scene. It is the rare conversion story that delights as it inspires\, amuses as it edifies and ultimately lays before the reader a lived testimony to the transforming grace of Christ.

SUMMARY:Alienated America
DESCRIPTION:Respected conservative journalist and commentator Timothy P. Carney continues the conversation begun with Hillbilly Elegy and the classic Bowling Alone in this hard-hitting analysis that identifies the true factor behind the decline of the American dream: it is not purely the result of economics as the left claims\, but the collapse of the institutions that made us successful\, including marriage\, church\, and civic life. \nDuring the 2016 presidential campaign\, Donald J. Trump proclaimed\, “the American dream is dead\,” and this message resonated across the country. \nWhy do so many people believe that the American dream is no longer within reach? Growing inequality\, stubborn pockets of immobility\, rising rates of deadly addiction\, the increasing and troubling fact that where you start determines where you end up\, heightening political strife—these are the disturbing realities threatening ordinary American lives today. \nThe standard accounts pointed to economic problems among the working class\, but the root was a cultural collapse: While the educated and wealthy elites still enjoy strong communities\, most blue-collar Americans lack strong communities and institutions that bind them to their neighbors. And outside of the elites\, the central American institution has been religion \nThat is\, it’s not the factory closings that have torn us apart; it’s the church closings. The dissolution of our most cherished institutions—nuclear families\, places of worship\, civic organizations—has not only divided us\, but eroded our sense of worth\, belief in opportunity\, and connection to one another. \nIn Alienated America\, Carney visits all corners of America\, from the dim country bars of Southwestern Pennsylvania.\, to the bustling Mormon wards of Salt Lake City\, and explains the most important data and research to demonstrate how the social connection is the great divide in America. He shows that Trump’s surprising victory was the most visible symptom of this deep-seated problem. In addition to his detailed exploration of how a range of societal changes have\, in tandem\, damaged us\, Carney provides a framework that will lead us back out of a lonely\, modern wilderness.

SUMMARY:From Fire by Water: My Journey to the Catholic Faith
DESCRIPTION:Sohrab Ahmari was a teenager living under the Iranian ayatollahs when he decided that there is no God. Nearly two decades later\, he would be received into the Roman Catholic Church. \nIn From Fire\, by Water\, he recounts this unlikely passage\, from the strident Marxism and atheism of a youth misspent on both sides of the Atlantic to a moral and spiritual awakening prompted by the Mass. At once a young intellectual’s finely crafted self-portrait and a life story at the intersection of the great ideas and events of our time\, the book marks the debut of a compelling new Catholic voice. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Author:\nSohrab Ahmari is the op-ed editor of the New York Post and a contributing editor of the Catholic Herald. Previously\, he served as a columnist and editor with the Wall Street Journal opinion pages in New York and London\, and as senior writer at Commentary magazine. His work has also been published in the New York Times\, the Times Literary Supplement\, the Chronicle of Higher Education\, the Weekly Standard\, First Things\, Dissent and America\, among many other publications. Ahmari is also the author of The New Philistines: How Identity Politics Disfigure the Arts. \n\nReviews:\n“Sohrab Ahmari is emerging as one of the finest minds and writers of his generation\, and the story of his conversion recounted here will stay with the reader for a very long time.”\n— Archbishop Charles J. Chaput\, from the Foreword \n“From Fire\, By Water is not so much about Sohrab Ahmari but about the work of divine grace in his soul disposed to hear God’s voice calling him with immeasurable and enduring love. It is the story of the journey of faith in which it is always God Who first calls us to believe in Him and place all our trust in Him. The same humility before God\, which disposed the author to respond to God’s call\, permits him to give a most compelling and indeed inspiring account of how He came to know God\, to love Him and to serve Him with all his heart. The author’s extraordinary gift for writing truly approaches\, as best as one can at any given time\, a true account of the incomparable beauty of the reality he recounts.”\n— Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke \n“Relentlessly honest\, deeply moving\, Sohrab Ahmari’s story of his intellectual and spiritual journey from dismissive disbelief to vibrant Catholic faith—a journey propelled by some intriguing companions\, including Nietzsche\, Camus\, and Koestler—is food for both mind and soul and an important testimony to the invigorating power of truth.”\n— George Weigel\, Author\, Witness to Hope and The End and the Beginning \n“This book is a testimony of Eucharistic triumph. God seeks us and will transform us if we let Him. Sohrab Ahmari’s beautiful memoir will help all of us trust in God alone better.”\n— Kathryn Jean Lopez\, Editor-at-Large of National Review \n“Memoirs written by people who are still in their thirties are almost never of interest to anyone. Sohrab Ahmari’s\, however\, is a grand exception. It’s a gripping account of the fascinating life of someone who was born to a liberal family in post-revolutionary Iran\, migrated to the United States where he and his mother lived among Mormons in Utah\, made a series of bad choices\, and found his way to political conservatism and a career in journalism\, and wrestled with God—unsuccessfully—to stay out of the Catholic Church.”\n— Robert P. George\, McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence\, Princeton University

SUMMARY:The Enchanted Hour
DESCRIPTION:A Wall Street Journal writer’s conversation-changing look at how reading aloud makes adults and children smarter\, happier\, healthier\, more successful and more closely attached\, even as technology pulls in the other direction. \nA miraculous alchemy occurs when one person reads to another\, transforming the simple stuff of a book\, a voice\, and a bit of time into complex and powerful fuel for the heart\, brain\, and imagination. Grounded in the latest neuroscience and behavioral research\, and drawing widely from literature\, The Enchanted Hour explains the dazzling cognitive and social-emotional benefits that await children\, whatever their class\, nationality or family background. But it’s not just about bedtime stories for little kids: Reading aloud consoles\, uplifts and invigorates at every age\, deepening the intellectual lives and emotional well-being of teenagers and adults\, too. \nMeghan Cox Gurdon argues that this ancient practice is a fast-working antidote to the fractured attention spans\, atomized families and unfulfilling ephemera of the tech era\, helping to replenish what our devices are leaching away. For everyone\, reading aloud engages the mind in complex narratives; for children\, it’s an irreplaceable gift that builds vocabulary\, fosters imagination\, and kindles a lifelong appreciation of language\, stories and pictures. \nBringing together the latest scientific research\, practical tips\, and reading recommendations\, The Enchanted Hour will both charm and galvanize\, inspiring readers to share this invaluable\, life-altering tradition with the people they love most.

SUMMARY:The God That Did Not Fail: How Religion Built and Sustains the West
DESCRIPTION:The CIC was excited to welcome Robert Royal to discuss his book\, “The God That Did Not Fail: How Religion Built and Sustains the West.” This book is the first CIC book group pick of 2019! The CIC book group is managed by Linda Formella and Milton Grenfell.  The group meets weekly at the CIC on Thursday from 12:45pm-1:30pm. Be sure to pick up your copy of “The God That Did Not Fail: How Religion Built and Sustains the West” at the CIC today. \nSecular humanists and other “progressives” have been predicting the demise of religion for the past 250 years. But they keep running into a problem: those who were supposed to be liberated by the secular gospel that God is Dead aren’t buying it. Except for some parts of western Europe and in countries culturally destroyed by Communism\, secularization in the radical sense has not occurred. \nWhile it has not obliterated the religious impulse\, however\, the drive towards “progressive irreligion” has\, Robert Royal believes\, encouraged ignorance of religion’s central role in the development of the West. In The God That Did Not Fail\, Royal offers an original reading of religion in ancient Greece and Rome\, of Christianity and Judaism\, the Middle Ages\, the Renaissance and Reformation\, the several modern Enlightenments\, culminating with a profound assessment of our current postmodern moment. He concludes that since religion is a permanent part of human nature and of the particular character of the West\, our efforts should be directed not into a quixotic effort to deny the undeniable\, especially as we face challenges from Islamic fundamentalism\, but into promoting a well thought out and dynamic interplay of faith\, reason\, and modern freedoms.

SUMMARY:Mind\, Heart\, and Soul: Intellectuals and the Path to Rome
DESCRIPTION:In a series of fascinating interviews\, a cradle Catholic (Robert P. George) and an adult convert (R. J. Snell)\, offer the stories of sixteen converts\, each a public intellectual or leading voice in their respective fields\, and each making a significant contribution to the life of the Church. \nMind\, Heart\, and Soul is a Surprised by Truth for a new generation. It will reinvigorate the faith of Catholics and answer questions or address hurdles those discerning entering the Church may have…by people have had the same questions and the same road \nWhile some of the converts are well-known\, their stories are not. Here they speak for themselves\, providing the reasons for belief that prompted these accomplished men and women to embrace the ancient faith. \nIncluded are interviews with a bishop\, a leading theologian and priest\, a member of the International Theological Commission\, a former megachurch pastor\, a prominent pro-life scholar\, professors from Harvard and other universities\, as well as journalists and writers\, novelists and scholars. Each are interviewed by another leading scholar\, many of whom are themselves converts and familiar with the hesitations\, anxieties\, discoveries\, and hopes of those who discover the Faith. \nThese conversion stories remind us that the Catholic Church retains her vitality\, able to provide answers and reasons for hope to new generations of believers\, always sustained by the Holy Spirit. It is all too-easy to become discouraged in our day and age\, but God never fails to call people to Himself\, as evidenced by these remarkable stories. \n[button type=”simple_button_link” url=”https://www.cicdc.org/th_gallery/mind-heart-and-soul-intellectuals-and-the-path-to-rome/” target=”” button_color_fon=”#d79b4b” ]Watch Video of Event[/button] \n\nAbout the speakers:\nRobert P. George holds Princeton’s celebrated McCormick Chair in Jurisprudence and is the Director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions. He has served as chairman of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom\, and before that on the President’s Council on Bioethics and as a presidential appointee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights. His many books include In Defense of Natural Law; Making Men Moral; Embryo: A Defense of Human Life; What is Marriage? Man and Woman: A Defense. A graduate of Swarthmore College\, he holds J.D. and M.T.S. degrees from Harvard University and the degrees of D.Phil.\, B.C.L.\, and D.C.L. from Oxford University. \nR. J. SUMMARY:Crafts and Storytime
DESCRIPTION:Schedule:\n10:30am-Reading of “Boxes for Katjie” for ages 8-12 and arts and craft activity for ages 2-7 \n11:00am-Reading of “Sarah and Simon and No Red Paint” for ages 2-7 and arts and crafts activity for ages 8-12 \n11:30am-Lunch (Chick-fil-A) \n1:00pm-Event Ends \n“Boxes for Katje” by Candace Flemming\nIn May 1945\, a Dutch girl named Katje is thrilled to receive a letter and a package of socks\, soap\, and chocolate from Rosie\, a girl she doesn’t know who lives in Mayfield\, Indiana. The kids start to exchange letters\, and when Rosie’s family members learn of Holland’s severe post-war deprivations\, they enlist Mayfield residents to send food and clothes to Katje\, who generously shares the gifts with others in her community. The sense of suffering isn’t strong here\, in part because the Dutch townspeople are almost always depicted as smiling about the packages. But the story is still moving\, and Dressen-McQueen’s lively illustrations\, in colored pencil\, oil pastel\, and acrylic\, pack lots of color\, pattern\, and historical details onto every expansive page. Fleming based the book on her mother’s experience\, which she describes in an author’s note; in the real-life story\, however\, adults\, not children\, orchestrated the events\, a finding that may be a little disappointing to kids who took the book\, with its specific dates\, town names\, and heroic\, generous children\, as straight fact. \n  \n“Sarah and Simon and No Red Paint” by Edward Ardizzone\nFrom the distinguished author-illustrator of the maritime Tim series and winner of the Kate Greenaway medal comes this classic picture book that was recommended to our editor by a children’s bookseller in Princeton\, NJ. Please find out if Sarah and Simon and No Red Paint is still in print\, she implored\, and if it is not\, please do all you can to publish it. With some difficulty\, we procured the book\, which was indeed out of print\, read it\, and fell in love. \nHere is the story of two children\, Sarah and Simon\, whose father is a painter\, and who live with their parents and baby brother in a big room called a Studio. Their father is talented but unacknowledged\, and so the family is poor\, though very happy. When the story opens\, the father is painting his masterpiece. Sarah and Simon are good little helpers and spend their time doing chores and visiting their favorite place in town: the old second-hand bookshop with its kind owner. Soon the masterpiece is almost finished\, except for the bit of red paint needed to complete it\, and even the dealer agrees to buy it if it were finished the next day. But there is no more red paint\, and no more money left with which to buy it. So Sarah and Simon set out to help their father\, and to their surprise\, end up reconciling their family with an estranged uncle and restoring the family fortune as well all with the help and kind solicitation of the bookshop owner… \nGodine is proud to bring this classic with its detailed line drawings and delicate watercolor illustrations back into print\, and our thanks to the good bookshop buyer who came to the rescue of this wonderful book.

SUMMARY:Confronting the Crisis of Faith and Reason: Reclaiming Authentic Catholic Education
DESCRIPTION:Panelists explore the pernicious effects of secular progressive education\, and its infiltration of Catholic schools. By examining the nature and purpose of Catholic education and its roots in the classical liberal arts tradition\, the panel will recognize how neglect of our own tradition undermines both faith and reason in our children. A dynamic renewal\, however\, is transforming and inspiring a growing number of Catholic schools who are reclaiming the Church’s tradition.

SUMMARY:Building the Benedict Option
DESCRIPTION:Building the Benedict Option is a combination spiritual memoir and practical handbook for Christians who want to build communities of prayer\, socialization\, and evangelization in the places where they live and work. \nBeginning when the author was a new convert\, she desired more communal prayer and fellowship than weekly Mass could provide. She surveyed her friends–busy\, young\, urban professionals like herself–and created enriching or supportive experiences that matched their desires and schedules. The result was a less lonely and more boisterous spiritual and social life. \nNo Catholic Martha Stewart\, Libresco is frank about how she plans events that allow her to feed thirty people on a Friday night without feeling exhausted. She is honest about the obstacles to prayer and the challenge to make it inviting and unobtrusive. Above all\, she communicates the joy she has experienced since discovering ways to open her home (even when it was only a small studio apartment). \nThe reader will close this book with four or five ideas for events to try over the next few weeks\, along with the tools to make them fruitful. From film nights to picnics in the park to resume-writing evenings\, there are plenty of ideas to choose from and loads of encouragement to make more room in one’s life for others.

SUMMARY:A Catechism for Family Life: Insights from Catholic Teaching on Love\, Marriage\, Sex\, and Parenting
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of A Catechism for Family Life: Insights from Church Teaching on Love\, Marriage\, Sex\, and Parenting is to present the teachings of the Catholic Church as they relate to specific questions in marriage and family life. Many Catholics are under-catechized and have trouble both understanding and articulating Church teaching on sexuality and marriage to an increasingly challenging culture. Pope Francis\, along with the fathers of the two recent Synods on the Family\, have called for better formation for those who work in the area of marriage and family life (see Amoris Laetitia\, 202). \nTo address this need\, we gathered pertinent questions facing men\, women\, and pastoral workers in marriage and family life. We then found passages relevant to these questions by researching Church documents on marriage and family from the past one hundred years. These include papal encyclicals\, apostolic exhortations\, and addresses\, Vatican II documents\, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. \nMainstream media coverage of Church events and Church teaching leads many to misunderstand Catholic positions on marriage and family life. While the Catholic Church has developed a rich\, detailed\, and positive teaching on marriage\, family\, and sexuality\, many Catholics do not have access to this teaching\, buried as it is in lengthy Church documents which many find intimidating. Finding the relevant teaching to address specific questions is not always a simple task\, either. This book’s main contribution is to present Church teaching relevant to marriage and family in one volume clearly organized by topic and question. \nBook available for purchase at the CIC.

SUMMARY:Tales That Tell: Moral Devastation & Original Sin in Literature (Pt. 2)
DESCRIPTION:Out of This Stony Rubbish: Devastation and Rebirth in Eliot’s The Waste Land\nMore than any other work of high modernist literature\, Eliot’s The Waste Land (1922) captures the loss of meaning and purpose that has overwhelmed an entire civilization. Surrounded by fragments of past knowledge that now seem barely intelligible in the wake of World War I\, modern society appears mired in an unprecedented spiritual crisis. Yet unlike his modernist peers (e.g.\, Virginia Woolf\, Bertrand Russell\, Ezra Pound\, et al.)\, Eliot’s critique of modern life is not confined to the conceptual resources and secular axioms that have shaped modern life. Though it predates Eliot’s “conversion” to Christianity by five years\, The Waste Land‘s forceful summation of spiritual\, ecological\, psycho-sexual\, and moral devastation already contains the seeds for the spiritual awakening that will be at the center of Eliot’s “Ash Wednesday” (1927) and his Four Quartets (1936-1943). \n
