SUMMARY:Gender Ideology and The Equality Act: How to Respond with Courage\, Truth\, and Love
DESCRIPTION:The Equality Act\, which has now passed through the U.S. House of Representatives and awaits a vote in the U.S. Senate\, threatens to fundamentally transform American anti-discrimination laws while providing little by way of religious exemption. As “trans-rights” language continues to sweep through corporations\, media\, and schools\, Catholics have been left scrambling for resources on how to respond with truth and love. We are delighted to host John McCormack\, Washington correspondent and fellow at National Review Institute\, and Mary Hasson\, Kate O’Beirne Fellow in Catholic Studies at the Ethics and Public Policy Center\, for a virtual discussion on the political implications of the Equality Act and to highlight the Person & Identity Project\, a new web resource to help parents\, clergy\, and parochial school teachers and administrators present the truth of the human person with courage and compassion. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. Please submit questions in advance to Rosemary at rosemary.eldridge@cicdc.org. \n

SUMMARY:Christ Versus Satan in Our Daily Lives: The Cosmic Struggle Between Good and Evil
DESCRIPTION:Spiritual writer\, theologian\, and philosopher Jesuit Fr. Robert Spitzer tackles the topic of recognizing and overcoming spiritual evil. His focus is the human heart. His goal: our moral and spiritual transformation\, which leads to true peace and genuine happiness. \nAbout the book:\nThe book is divided into two main parts: the realities of God’s goodness and of spiritual evil\, and recognizing and overcoming diabolical tactics\, which range from temptation and deception to the Deadly Sins. \nFather Spitzer shows readers how to experience God’s peace even during times of suffering and persecution. He examines the basics of the spiritual life and Christian mysticism\, including the contemplative dimension. He explains the purgative\, illuminative\, and unitive aspects of spirituality\, as well as the Lord’s consolation and the passive Dark Night of the Spirit. \nFather Spitzer provides the biblical and theological background of Jesus’ victory over Satan. The author also explores the reality of the Devil\, including extraordinary manifestations of diabolic activity such as possession. He recalls the true story of the famous possession case on which the novel and film The Exorcist were based. \nIn the final sections of the book the author explains: \nhow diabolical spiritual forces operatehow temptation works\, and what to do to defeat itthe”deadly sins” and how to overcome them

SUMMARY:America on Trial: A Defense of the Founding
DESCRIPTION:Robert Reilly\, Director of the Westminster Institute\, discusses his new book “America on Trial: A Defense of the Founding.” During his lecture Reilly will focuses on the tradition of “right reason\,” that is\, the metaphysical\, epistemological\, anthropological\, and theological roots of constitutional government. He will reintroduces listeners to ideas about the primacy of reason over will\, universal truth\, natural law\, and monotheism. \nAbout the book:\nThe Founding of the American Republic is on trial. Critics say it was a poison pill with a time-release formula; we are its victims. Its principles are responsible for the country’s moral and social disintegration because they were based on the Enlightenment falsehood of radical individual autonomy. \nIn this well-researched book\, Robert Reilly declares: not guilty. To prove his case\, he traces the lineage of the ideas that made the United States\, and its ordered liberty\, possible. These concepts were extraordinary when they first burst upon the ancient world: the Judaic oneness of God\, who creates ex nihilo and imprints his image on man; the Greek rational order of the world based upon the Reason behind it; and the Christian arrival of that Reason (Logos) incarnate in Christ. These may seem a long way from the American Founding\, but Reilly argues that they are\, in fact\, its bedrock. Combined\, they mandated the exercise of both freedom and reason. \nThese concepts were further developed by thinkers in the Middle Ages\, who formulated the basic principles of constitutional rule. Why were they later rejected by those claiming the right to absolute rule\, then reclaimed by the American Founders\, only to be rejected again today? Reilly reveals the underlying drama: the conflict of might makes right versus right makes might. America’s decline\, he claims\, is not to be discovered in the Founding principles\, but in their disavowal.

SUMMARY:Columbus and the Crisis of the West
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Robert Royal\, Catholic author and the President of the Faith & Reason Institute\, carefully examines the mind and motives of Christopher Columbus and his legacy. \nAbout the book:\nAfter decades of politically charged controversy\, the reputation and standing of Christopher Columbus lies battered beneath mountains of misjudgments and distortions. The surge of historical revisionism now ravaging the legendary explorer insists that his daring adventures brought only tragic consequences: disease\, death\, subjugation of native peoples\, incitement of the African slave trade\, destruction of the environment\, and other horrors. \nBut is this a legitimate assessment of Europe’s inevitable western expansion? \nIn Columbus and the Crisis of the West\, Dr. Robert Royal carefully examines the mind and motives of Christopher Columbus\, distinguishing him as the greatest explorer of his age\, whose courage and vision extended Christian Europe and inspired the American spirit. \nYet you won’t find here a full-throated defense of Christopher Columbus. Rather\, Dr. Royal examines what actually happened in the decades following 1492\, when two widely divergent cultures met and mingled. Refusing to ignore or underplay the tragedies of America’s origins\, Royal masterfully places these events in historical context\, protecting them from the contemporary biases that are moving forward at ramming speed to crush fragile truths. \nIn these pages you’ll explore Columbus’s spirituality and the apocalyptic vision that guided him\, as well as the disparate ways in which Puritans and Catholics viewed and approached the indigenous peoples. You’ll also discover what life was really like for them\, the truth about Indian environmentalism\, the essence of the noble savage\, and the soundness of the claim that the native peoples were innocents living in harmony with nature. \nHere is the book that cuts through the fashionable pieties of our time by boldly refuting the most popular indictments of Columbus and early America. Finally\, a serious classical scholar who confronts with power the crusading revisionist historians who are leveraging the Native American conquest in an effort to defile\, dishonor\, and ultimately upend Western civilization.

SUMMARY:Reframing End-of-life Care During COVID
DESCRIPTION:We Need a Revolution of Love in End-of-Life Care \nOver the last 10 months\, we have seen so much death. And we’ve seen the heightened dangers elderly Americans face during the Coronavirus pandemic. Their vulnerabilities are made worse by ideologies that would cast them aside as inconvenient – even while we have made sacrifices to protect life\, at the same time we have seen what Pope Francis calls our throwaway society on display. Government orders even suggest someone might have thought seniors in nursing homes were necessary casualties of the pandemic. We must do better. And while we hail frontlines workers who have made tremendous sacrifices\, we have a responsibility to do our best to reverence their lives until the natural end – as with all lives. \nSr. Constance Veit\, LSP\, is a Little Sister of the Poor. The Little Sisters welcome the elderly poor into their homes with loving care\, seeing each one as Christ Himself. \nCharles Camosy has been a foremost watchdog in advocating for the elderly. Associate professor of theological and social ethics at Fordham University\, Camosy is author of Resisting Throwaway Culture: How a Consistent Life Ethic Can Unite a Fractured People. \nThis event is moderated by Kathryn Jean Lopez.

SUMMARY:Division\, Decadence\, and Renewal
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, January 22nd in partnership with The Trinity Forum\, The Institute for Human Ecology\, and the Harvard Christian Alumni Society\, we are delighted to welcome author and New York Times columnist Ross Douthat. \nIn Douthat’s book\, The Decadent Society\, he provides an enlightening diagnosis of our modern condition which\, he says\, has been characterized by decadence. Douthat argues that many of today’s discontents and derangements reflect a sense of futility and disappointment—a feeling that the future is not what was promised. \nAlmost a year after its original publication\, we are keen to hear from Ross on what the events of the past year have revealed about our condition and how we might serve as agents of renewal in a divisive and decadent time. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. Once you register\, you will receive a confirmation email containing a Zoom invite link\, which will be unique to you.

SUMMARY:The Future of Christian Marriage
DESCRIPTION:Marriage has come a long way since biblical times. Women are no longer property\, and practices like polygamy have long been rejected. The world is wealthier\, healthier\, and more able to find and form relationships than ever. So why are Christian congregations doing more burying than marrying today? Explanations for the recession in marriage range from the mathematical–more women in church than men–to the economic\, and from the availability of sex to progressive politics. But perhaps marriage hasn’t really changed at all. Instead\, there is simply less interest in marriage in an era marked by technology\, gender equality\, and secularization. \nMark Regnerus discusses his new book and explores how today’s Christians find a mate within a faith that esteems marriage but in a world that increasingly yawns at it. His book draws on in-depth interviews with nearly two hundred young-adult Christians from the United States\, Mexico\, Spain\, Poland\, Russia\, Lebanon\, and Nigeria\, in order to understand the state of matrimony in global Christian circles today. \nRegnerus finds that marriage has become less of a foundation for a couple to build upon and more of a capstone. Meeting increasingly high expectations of marriage is difficult\, though\, in a free market whose logic reaches deep into the home today. The result is endemic uncertainty\, slowing relationship maturation\, and stalling marriage. But plenty of Christians innovate\, resist\, and wed\, and this book argues that the future of marriage will be a religious one.

SUMMARY:The Liturgical Year at Home: A Guide for the Intentional Consumer
DESCRIPTION:We apologize for the last minute change in plans\, but due to unforeseen circumstances we have to postpone our December 3rd event “The Liturgical Year at Home: A Guide for the Intentional Consumer.”  We will share the panelist’s Christmas gift guide here shortly\, so keep an eye out.\nOn any given day it is difficult to not get caught up in our consumerist culture. It can be even harder to avoid during Christmas when arguably the glorification of buying and selling is at its peak. As Catholics we understand that Christmas is so much more than gifts. It is a time of penance\, joyous anticipation\, and preparation for the great Christmas feast. This does not mean that Christians should not participate in the marketplace. It should\, however\, encourage us to reflect on how we participate and our overall attitude towards material goods and how we use them. \nIn this spirit\, we have put together a panel that will explore what it means to live liturgically\, how we can be more intentional consumers\, and why a theology of the home matters. Our panelist will also provide a gift guide full of their favorite products that are not only beautiful and intentional but Christ centered. \n

SUMMARY:Resolved: UBI Meets the Catholic Demand for a Just Wage
DESCRIPTION:One of the great advantages of Catholic social teaching is that it is normally stated in general terms of values\, principles and goals\, not specific programs. It is the reason that Catholic social teaching doesn’t fit into either political party’s platform and why Catholics of good standing in the Church can exercise prudential judgement and come to different conclusions.  \nAs Catholics we are called to honor the human dignity of each person we encounter and encouraged to approach conversations with civility\, clarity\, and compassion. In this spirit\, we invite you to join us as Dr. Ward and Dr. Pakaluk debate whether a universal basic income (UBI) aligns with Catholic social teaching’s call for a just wage. \nDr. Ward will defend the resolution and Dr. Pakaluk will oppose the resolution. IHE Executive Director Joseph Capizzi will moderate this Oxford-style debate. \nSources for Affirmative:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://uscatholic.org/articles/202004/does-catholic-social-teaching-support-a-universal-basic-income/\n\nhttps://berkleycenter.georgetown.edu/responses/for-catholic-social-thought-basic-income-gets-work-wealth-and-family-right\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSources for Negative:\n\n\n\n\nWyscinski\, Stepan Cardinal. 1995. All You Who Labor: Work and the Sanctification of Daily Life. SUMMARY:What It Means to Be Human: The Case for the Body in Public Bioethics
DESCRIPTION:A leading expert on public bioethics advocates for a new conception of human identity in American law and policy. \nThe natural limits of the human body make us vulnerable and therefore dependent\, throughout our lives\, on others. Yet American law and policy disregard these stubborn facts\, with statutes and judicial decisions that presume people to be autonomous\, defined by their capacity to choose. As legal scholar O. Carter Snead points out\, this individualistic ideology captures important truths about human freedom\, but it also means that we have no obligations to each other unless we actively\, voluntarily embrace them. Under such circumstances\, the neediest must rely on charitable care. When it is not forthcoming\, law and policy cannot adequately respond. \nWhat It Means to Be Human makes the case for a new paradigm\, one that better represents the gifts and challenges of being human. Inspired by the insights of Alasdair MacIntyre and Charles Taylor\, Snead proposes a vision of human identity and flourishing that supports those who are profoundly vulnerable and dependent—children\, the disabled\, and the elderly. To show how such a vision would affect law and policy\, he addresses three complex issues in bioethics: abortion\, assisted reproductive technology\, and end-of-life decisions. Avoiding typical dichotomies of conservative-versus-liberal and secular-versus-religious\, Snead recasts debates over these issues and situates them within his framework of embodiment and dependence. He concludes that\, if the law is built on premises that reflect the fully lived reality of life\, it will provide support for the vulnerable\, including the unborn\, mothers\, families\, and those nearing the end of their lives. In this way\, he argues\, policy can ensure that people have the care they need in order to thrive. \nIn this provocative and consequential book\, Snead rethinks how the law represents human experiences so that it might govern more wisely\, justly\, and humanely.

SUMMARY:Foster Care: An Essential Call
DESCRIPTION:Foster care is at the heart of Christian life\, and yet it can often be at the peripheries of our public conversations and even parish life. At a time when the need for foster parents is on the increase\, as so many anxieties and addictions rise to the service in this pandemic\, how can we get more involved? How can we support those who need support? How can we make sure children are in safe and stable homes? And why is a Supreme Court case in the fall critical to this all? \nOur speakers will be Melissa Buck\, a foster and adoptive mother whose court case was argued by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty\, Andrea Picciotti-Bayer\, legal advisor & senior fellow at the Catholic Association (who has written an amicus brief on the Philadelphia adoption case before the Supreme Court)\, and Sarah Zagorski\, former foster child and activist. \nOur conversation is moderated by Kathryn Jean Lopez\, senior fellow at the National Review Institute and editor-at-large at National Review.

SUMMARY:The Ethics of CRISPR and Genetically Modified Humans
DESCRIPTION:After the Human Genome Project\, the field of genetics had laid dormant until recently.  The surprising advance of CRISPR technology allows scientists and amateurs to edit the DNA of plants\, animals and humans.  There is a heated debate about whether we should use this technology not only to correct genetic illnesses\, but also to enhance humanity. With the news of the birth of babies in China through CRISPR gene editing of embryos\, we have crossed the boundary of genetically modified humans. Would this technology create superior offspring who would be healthier\, smarter\, and live longer? Could such technology change human nature in a radical and possibly disastrous way? \nThis lunch hour talk will look at the state of the technology and offer some ethical reflections on its use.

SUMMARY:Beauty Incarnated: How Sacred Art Uplifts the Soul
DESCRIPTION:Together a panel of artists explore and explain how sacred art has a desire to re-present beauty in the sacred\, and ultimately uplift the soul with prayer.  \nGiorgio Fozzati and Fernando Cidoncha discuss the mission of the artists of Sacred Art School Firenze. They will highlight how at the heart of their profession is the contemplation of the Mystery. \nAndrew de Sa explores sacred art and the Incarnation. He will specifically focus on the claim made by Pope Benedict XVI in Spirit of the Liturgy:   \n“The complete absence of images is incompatible with faith in the Incarnation of God. God has acted in history and entered into our ´sensible´ world\, so that it may become transparent to him. Images of beauty\, in which the mystery of the invisible God becomes visible\, are an ´essential´ part of Christian worship”.

SUMMARY:Eat\, Fast\, Feast: Heal Your Body While Feeding Your Soul—A Christian Guide to Fasting
DESCRIPTION:“Today’s student will largely have to educate himself in the highest things. He will do this by reading and conversing—even by prayer and fasting. The college student needs the virtue that enables him to see the origins\, the first principles. These will be invisible to the person who cultivates evil habits—since his mind will busy itself\, even exhaust itself\, trying to rationalize the person’s bad decisions. He won’t even have the energy to try to search for truth.” – Fr. James Schall\, “How to Keep Your Virtue in College\,” August 2017 \nIn this installment of the CIC’s Fr. James V. Schall Lecture Series\, Jay W. Richards\, PhD\, delves into the topic of his latest book\, Eat\, Fast\, Feast: Heal Your Body While Feeding Your Soul—A Christian Guide to Fasting. \nDr. Richards blends old Christian eating habits with current research on the benefits of fasting in this spirited outing. Richards stumbled into fasting when he eliminated certain foods from his diet in conjunction with medical tests. Instead of feeling the fatigue he expected\, Richards noticed moments of lucidity and strength and decided to explore the practice. Christians used to fast as part of their normal routine\, he writes\, but it has been forgotten over the years except for special occasions\, such as Lent. Richards presents a plan that incorporates keto diet principles\, which help the body burn fat\, and explores the simple “16 hour fast” as well as the relationship between fasting and cultivating discipline\, sacrifice\, and ultimately holiness. Facts about how the body breaks down carbs and regulates insulin help readers make informed choices about adopting a healthy diet. He also provides ideas for feasts and “mini-feasts” that\, following times of fasting\, allow for healthy\, communal eating experiences. Christians interested in fasting diet trends will find this instructional and convincing. \nThe Fr. James V. Schall Lecture Series is a monthly feature of the Catholic Information’s Center’s program with speakers addressing recurring themes in Fr. Schall’s writings\, such as liberal learning\, the relationship between faith and reason\, and great writers in the Catholic tradition.

SUMMARY:American Priest: The Ambitious Life and Conflicted Legacy of Notre Dame's Father Ted Hesburgh
DESCRIPTION:A provocative new biography probes deeply into the storied life of Father Ted Hesburgh\, the well-loved but often controversial president of Notre Dame University. \nConsidered for many decades to be the most influential priest in America\, Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh\, played what many consider pivotal roles in higher education\, the Catholic Church\, and national and international affairs. American Priest examines his life and his many and varied engagements—from the university he led for thirty-five years to his associations with the Vatican and the White House—and evaluates the extent and importance of his legacy. \nAuthor and Notre Dame priest-professor Wilson D. Miscamble tracks how Hesburgh transformed Catholic higher education in the postwar era and explores how he became a much-celebrated voice in America at large. Yet\, beyond the hagiography that often surrounds Hesburgh’s legacy lies another more complex and challenging story. What exactly were his contributions to higher learning; what was his involvement in the civil rights movement; and what was the nature of his role as advisor to popes and presidents? \nUnderstanding Hesburgh’s life and work illuminates the journey that the Catholic Church traversed over the second half of the twentieth century. Exploring and evaluating Hesburgh’s importance\, then\, contributes not only to the colorful history of Notre Dame but also to comprehending the American Catholic experience.
