SUMMARY:All the Kingdoms of The World
DESCRIPTION:A fresh assessment of Catholic integralism and other new and radical religious alternatives to liberal democracy. \nAccording to a common narrative\, the twentieth century spelled the end of faith-infused political movements. Their ideologies\, like Catholic integralism\, would soon be forgotten. Humans were finally learning to keep religion out of politics. \nOr were we? In the twenty-first century\, nations as diverse as Russia\, India\, Poland\, and Turkey have seen a revival of religious politics\, and many religious movements in other countries have proved similarly resilient. A new generation of political theologians passionately reformulate ancient religious doctrines to revolutionize modern political life. They insist that states recognize the true religion\, and they reject modern liberal ideals of universal religious freedom and church-state separation. \nIn this book\, philosopher Kevin Vallier explores these new doctrines\, not as lurid oddities but as though they might be true. The anti-liberal doctrine known as Catholic integralism serves as Vallier’s test case. Yet his approach naturally extends to similar ideologies within Chinese Confucianism and Sunni Islam. \nVallier treats anti-liberal thinkers with the respect that liberals seldom afford them and offers more moderate skeptics of liberalism a clear account of the alternatives. Many liberals\, by contrast\, will find these doctrines frightening and strange but of enduring interest. Vallier invites all his readers on a unique intellectual adventure\, encouraging them to explore unfamiliar ideals through the lenses of theology\, philosophy\, politics\, economics\, and history.

SUMMARY:The Shroud of Jesus: And the Sign John Ingeniously Concealed
DESCRIPTION:Gilbert R. Lavoie\, M.D.\, invites you on a fascinating adventure to examine the Shroud of Turin\, juxtaposing his scientific findings with John’s Gospel account of the death and resurrection of Jesus. This story of the life of Jesus comes alive through relatable\, real-world scientific witnesses who explore whether the image on the shroud is the work of human hands\, a natural phenomenon\, or a supernatural event. \nThere are abundant photos that allow you to decide for yourself what the image and blood marks of this cloth reveal. As you explore the mystery of this shroud through the eyes of forensics and the lens of scripture\, you will begin to discover the following\, and much more: \n\nThe reason why the shroud image isn’t mentioned in the Gospels \nSignificant studies that demonstrate why the shroud cannot be a painting \nDetails that confirm that the man of the shroud was crucified \nHow the shroud corroborates the Gospel accounts of the death\, resurrection\, and ascension of Jesus \n\nDr. Lavoie conducts his own studies to determine how blood transferred from a crucified body to cloth. He applies his experience in treating trauma patients and observing the appearance of corpses in autopsy rooms to unveil intriguing insights about the image and blood on the shroud. And he details other experts’ hands-on observations of the shroud at microscopic\, biological\, and chemical levels and shows how they attest to its authenticity. \nThis book is a visual journey that opens the door to new insights into the Gospel of John. It is only through John’s witness of the life of Jesus that we can come to a more complete appreciation of the Shroud of Jesus.

SUMMARY:The Shroud of Turin: Mystery and History
DESCRIPTION:Dr. White will discuss the Shroud’s unexplained properties that baffle modern science. The linen cloth shows a mysterious image of a crucified man who bears all the related wounds that mirror the Gospel narratives of the Passion of Jesus Christ. Its unique image characteristics and compelling scientific data make it the most studied artifact in the world from many academic disciplines. A life-sized Shroud of Turin replica is on display during her talk\, sponsored by the National Shroud of Turin Exhibit\, which plans to produce a permanent Shroud of Turin Exhibit in Washington\, D.C. \n \nGroup Photo \nFrom left to right: Lisa Rowan\, David Adams\, Myra Kahn Adams\, Dr. Cheryl White\, Cardinal–Designate Papal Nuncio Christophe Pierre and Fr. SUMMARY:The Future of Catholicism and Education in Modern Secular Ireland
DESCRIPTION:The Catholic Church and secular society at large are experiencing unprecedented social and moral transformation in Ireland and throughout the Western World.   This is creating new challenges that require innovative models for Catholic education. In the past\, Ireland’s unparalleled influence on Catholic education worldwide was supported by free government-backed Catholic schools in Ireland which succeeded the British educational system. Today declining religious adherence in Ireland\, the disappearance of Faith formation from the remaining nominally Catholic schools\, as well as declining academic standards have placed transformed Irish society and Catholic education in particular. \nIn response to these realities \, Professor Pádraig Cantillon-Murphy is leading efforts to forge new models of Catholic education in Ireland and beyond.  Recognizing the need for Catholic education independent of the secular state\, Professor Cantillon-Murphy and his wife Grace established Mater Dei Academy\, a completely original academic model for Ireland: independent and lay-run explicitly Catholic\, Cambridge International certified\, and classically inspired in pedagogy and curriculum. \nIn this presentation Professor Pádraig Cantillon-Murphy will provide an overview of classical education in the Irish context\, the historical role of Ireland in the global education ecosystem\, and address the challenges facing Catholic education and faith formation in contemporary society\, explicating the need for a reestablishment of a new academic model suitable for the third millennium.

SUMMARY:József Cardinal Mindszenty: Memoirs
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us and our co-sponsor\, the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation\, on Friday\, June 16th (3:00-5:00pm) for a presentation\, interview\, and book signing of József Cardinal Mindszenty’s Memoirs with author Daniel J. Mahoney at the Victims of Communism Museum. \nPLEASE NOTE: This event WILL NOT take place at the CIC\, but rather at the VICTIMS OF COMMUNISM MUSEUM located at 900 15TH STREET NW\, WASHINGTON\, DC. \nThe event will include a presentation by Dr. Mahoney on Cardinal Mindszenty (1892-1975)\, who was one of the anti-totalitarian titans of the twentieth century. The Hungarian Cardinal\, now named Venerable by the Catholic Church\, tenaciously defended human dignity and religious freedom against the totalitarian movements and regimes that subjugated east-central Europe during the worst years of the twentieth century. As the late Cardinal George Pell has testified\, “The memoirs of Cardinal Mindszenty are enthralling\, evidence of a terrible time\, to be set with Solzhenitsyn’s tales of the Gulag.” But like Solzhenitsyn’s work\, Mindszenty’s Memoirs also provide a witness to fidelity and hope. \nThe book includes a foreword by Joseph Pearce and an introduction by Dr. Mahoney. These moving Memoirs reveal the full story of the legendary hero-priest who has come to be regarded as a symbol of Christian and national resistance to communism. \nDr. Mahoney’s presentation will be followed by an interview\, including a Q&A period. The event will conclude with a book signing. \nPlease register to attend through the Victims of Communism registration page!

SUMMARY:Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire in Everyday Life
DESCRIPTION:Gravity affects every aspect of our physical being\, but there’s a psychological force just as powerful―yet almost nobody has heard of it. It’s responsible for bringing groups of people together and pulling them apart\, making certain goals attractive to some and not to others\, and fueling cycles of anxiety and conflict. In Wanting\, Luke Burgis draws on the work of French polymath René Girard to bring this hidden force to light and reveals how it shapes our lives and societies. \nAccording to Girard\, humans don’t desire anything independently. Human desire is mimetic―we imitate what other people want. This affects the way we choose partners\, friends\, careers\, clothes\, and vacation destinations. Mimetic desire is responsible for the formation of our very identities. It explains the enduring relevancy of Shakespeare’s plays\, why Peter Thiel decided to be the first investor in Facebook\, and why our world is growing more divided as it becomes more connected. \nWanting also shows that conflict does not arise because of our differences―it comes from our sameness. Because we learn to want what other people want\, we often end up competing for the same things. Ignoring our large similarities\, we cling to our perceived differences. \nDrawing on his experience as an entrepreneur\, teacher\, and student of classical philosophy and theology\, Burgis shares tactics that help turn blind wanting into intentional wanting–not by trying to rid ourselves of desire\, but by desiring differently. It’s possible to be more in control of the things we want\, to achieve more independence from trends and bubbles\, and to find more meaning in our work and lives. \nThe future will be shaped by our desires. Wanting shows us how to desire a better one.

SUMMARY:Pilgrimage to the Museum: Man's Search for God Through Art and Time
DESCRIPTION:Co- Sponsored with Divine Mercy University \nClick Here to Learn More about Divine Mercy University \nHave you ever visited a museum and found the narrations in the self-guided-tour headsets a bit tedious? Slightly too clinical\, perhaps? And have you ever noticed that God is rarely mentioned in art museums these days\, unless in a cold\, archaeological\, “scientific” way? All of that is about to change. \nIn Pilgrimage to the Museum\, author-curator Stephen Auth takes you on a provocative and colorful journey through the history of Western art\, interpreted through a lens of profound Christian faith ― appropriately so since\, in Auth’s view\, much of Western art expresses humanity’s search for God\, the Divine Artist-Creator. \nIn this beautifully illustrated voyage\, drawn largely from works on display at New York’s popular Metropolitan Museum of Art\, you will experience the ups and downs of humanity’s determined quest. Leaving all the art-history jargon at the front door\, Auth will transport you in his spiritual time machine from Egypt’s Old Kingdom\, through Greece and Rome\, to medieval Europe; from the age of the Renaissance\, through the Ages of Exploration and Enlightenment; and from the rise of atheism in the late 1800s to the seeds of a spiritual rebirth in the modern era. Along the way\, you will experience anew the masterpieces of many artists\, from Polykleitos to Raphael\, Duccio to Rembrandt\, Monet to Picasso. \nThrough the works of these great artists\, you will encounter the profound truths that lead many to God and cause many others to wonder. You will discover how various themes and motifs of man’s struggle to find God occur\, morph\, fade\, and then reoccur centuries later. As you laugh\, cry\, and pray your way through this illuminating voyage\, you will emerge refreshed and renewed in your own journey to God― and you will never look at a work of art the same way again. \n  \n \nThe event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. \nEvent Schedule:  \n6:00-7:00pm- Lecture. \n7:00-8:00pm- Book Signing and Light Reception. \n8:00pm- Event Ends. \n

SUMMARY:Feminism Against Progress!
DESCRIPTION:Registration is full at this time. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nModern feminism increasingly benefits only a small class of professional women. There is no reason to sacrifice everyone else’s happiness for their sake.\nMary Harrington shows that women’s liberation was less the result of moral progress than an effect of the material consequences of the Industrial Revolution. We’ve now left the industrial era for the digital age\, in which technology is liberating us from natural limits and embodied sex differences. This shift may benefit the elites\, but it also makes it easier to commodify women’s bodies\, human intimacy\, and female reproductive abilities.”Feminism” has been captured by well-off white-collar women\, who use it to advance their own economic and political interests under the pretense that these are the interests of all women—all the while wielding the term like a club against anyone\, male or female\, who dissents.Feminism against Progress is a stark warning against a dystopian future in which poor women become little more than convenient sources of body parts to be harvested and wombs to be rented by the rich. “Progress” no longer benefits the majority of women\, and only a feminism that is skeptical of it can truly defend their interests in the twenty-first century.\n  \nAbout Our Panel:  \nMary Harrington is a writer. Her work has been published in First Things\, American Affairs\, Palladium\, the New York Post\, The Spectator\, the New Statesman\, the London Times and the Mail on Sunday among others. She is a contributing editor at UnHerd\, where she writes a weekly column\, and her book Feminism Against Progress published in 2023 with Forum Press. She tweets as @moveincircles. \nLeah Libresco Sargeant is the author of Arriving at Amen and Building the Benedict Option. She is a convert from atheism to Catholicism who has worked as a policy analyst\, a data journalist\, and a curriculum developer at an organization teaching “defensive driving for your brain.” Her writing has appeared in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, Plough\, Comment\, First Things\, America\, and other outlets. She runs Other Feminisms\, a substack community focused on the dignity of dependence. \nChristine Emba is an opinion columnist and editor at The Washington Post and the author of Rethinking Sex: A Provocation (Penguin Random House\, 2022)\, as well as a contributing editor for Comment magazine. Before joining The Washington Post in 2015\, Christine was the Hilton Kramer Fellow in Criticism at the New Criterion and a deputy editor at the Economist Intelligence Unit\, focusing on technology and innovation. She grew up in Virginia and holds an A.B. in public and international affairs from Princeton University. \nAlexandra DeSanctis is a fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center and a columnist at National Review\, where she spent six years as a full-time journalist covering politics\, elections\, culture\, and the pro-life movement. Her writing has been published in the New York Times\, the Wall Street Journal\, the Washington Post\, The Atlantic\, and many other publications. She is co-author with Ryan T. Anderson of the book Tearing Us Apart: How Abortion Harms Everything and Solves Nothing\, released last June.

SUMMARY:Mount Wonder Book Event
DESCRIPTION:Memories of college have intruded on Bernard Kennisbaum’s mind with increasing regularity. It is his junior year\, and Bernard declares himself free of his father’s financial claws\, free to follow his Muse. A beguiling beauty\, Apryl\, has caught his eye\, and her scent leads him into a lecture hall that will change his life. His unwitting arrival in a Great Books class—The Humanities Integration Program—devolves into a wild west showdown with a trigger-happy prof\, ambitious administrators\, jealous colleagues\, vengeful state officials\, hoodlums\, and hangover hippies. Lured in by poetry\, Plato\, and female pheromones\, Bernard discovers an unlikely collegiate underworld dedicated to rescuing Western civilization from soulless purveyors of the bottom line. The trouble is\, Bernard doesn’t know which side he is on\, and he soon learns he may not know everything about his family or himself. In Mount Wonder\, two cultures collide and roll into one rip-roaring adventure of love and learning. It is based on John Senior and the Integrated Humanities Program at the University of Kansas that spawned a great educational and cultural movement. Yet Mount Wonder could just as easily be based on today’s pitched battles over the purpose of a university education\, the wisdom of the West and its canon of writers\, and whether a Good life can be lived in a decadent culture.

SUMMARY:Adam and Eve after the Pill: REVISITED
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Mary Eberstadt\, Author and Fran Maier\, Napa Institute Board Member \n  \n5:00PM- Mass \n6:00-7:00PM- Talk \n7:00-8:00PM- Light Reception \n  \nCelebrated author Mary Eberstadt continues her ground-breaking examination of the legacy of the sexual revolution. The book’s predecessor\, Adam and Eve after the Pill (2012)\, dissected the revolution’s microcosmic fallout via its empirical effects on the lives of men\, women\, and children. This follow-on book investigates the revolution’s macrocosmic transformations in three spheres: society\, politics\, and Christianity. It also includes an analysis of the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade. \nWith unflinching logic\, Eberstadt summarizes the toll on Western society of today’s fractured homes\, feral children\, and social isolates. Empathetic yet precise\, she connects the dots between shrinking\, broken families and rising sexual confusion\, seen most recently in transgenderism and related phenomena. The book also traces the dissolution of the home to signature developments in Western politics\, especially the increase in acrimony\, polarization\, street violence\, and identity politics. The result is an indictment of the turn taken by much of the world following the post-1960s embrace of contraception and the stigmatization of traditional morality. \nThe book’s section on the revolution’s infiltration of the churches is must-reading for anyone concerned about the fate of Western Christianity. In a moment when millions wonder whether the Catholic Church will retreat from age-old moral teachings\, this book demands to be put at the center of discussion. \n  \nCo Sponsored with Napa Institute

SUMMARY:What Cardinal Pell Meant: A Personal Reflection
DESCRIPTION:With the unexpected death of Cardinal George Pell on January 10\, 2023\, the Church lost a champion of orthodoxy and one of this century’s great examples of Christian witness. SUMMARY:Let Me See Your Face. Thomas Aquinas on Divine and Human Beauty
DESCRIPTION:A lecture by Fr. Innocent Smith\, O.P. of St. Mary’s Seminary & University.  \nCO- Sponsored with the Thomistic Institute in DC\, \n“God is the source of all beauty. Through the Incarnation\, the Incarnate Lord has has become visible in order to restore the beauty of humanity and lift us up to the love of the invisible God. This talk will explore the insights of Thomas Aquinas on beauty and its ability to help us to embrace the goodness and truth of God himself.” \n  \nAbout the Speaker: \nInnocent Smith\, op is Assistant Professor of Homiletics at St. Mary’s Seminary & University. His research interests are at the intersection of liturgy and theology\, including sacramental theology\, homiletics\, liturgical manuscripts\, ecclesiology\, and sacred music. He is a Roman Catholic priest and a member of Province of St. Joseph of the Order of Preachers. He is presently assigned to the Dominican community of Sts. Philip and James in Baltimore\, MD. \nSmith’s forthcoming monograph\, “Bible Missals and the Dominican Liturgy\,” focuses on medieval bibles which contain liturgical texts for the celebration of the Mass. The liturgical selections contained in bible missals give precious insight into both the development of the celebration of the liturgy as well as the processes of customization and design of medieval bibles. Bible missals present a fascinating example of the interpenetration of memory and enactment\, enabling the celebration of the mysteries articulated in the biblical text.

SUMMARY:To Love and Be Loved: A Personal Portrait of Mother Teresa
DESCRIPTION:From a trusted advisor and devoted friend of Mother Teresa comes an extraordinary firsthand account of the miraculous woman behind the saint. \nMother Teresa was one of the most admired women of the 20th century\, and her memory continues to inspire charitable work around the world. She believed the greatest need of a human being is to love and be loved. In 1948\, she founded the Missionaries of Charity to work directly with the very poorest of Calcutta. From the efforts of one woman entering the slums of Entally\, the Missionaries of Charity grew into an organization operating soup kitchens\, health clinics\, hospices\, and shelters in 139 countries\, at no cost to any government or to those served. In 2016\, she became Saint Teresa of Calcutta. \nAuthor Jim Towey had been a high-flying Congressional staffer and lawyer in the 1980s until a brief meeting with Mother Teresa illuminated the emptiness of his life. He began volunteering at one of her soup kitchens and using his legal skills and political connections to help the Missionaries of Charity. When Mother Teresa suggested he take shifts at her AIDS hospice\, Towey realized he was all in. Soon\, he gave up his job and possessions and became a full-time volunteer for Mother Teresa. He traveled with her frequently\, arranged her meetings with politicians\, and handled many of her legal affairs. \nTo Love and Be Loved is a firsthand account of Mother Teresa’s last years\, and the first book ever to detail her dealings with worldly matters. We see her gracefully navigate the opportunities and challenges of leadership\, the perils of celebrity\, and the humiliations and triumphs of aging. We also catch her indulging in chocolate ice cream\, making jokes about mini-skirts\, and telling the President of the United States he’s wrong. Above all\, we see her extraordinary devotion to God and to the very poorest of His children. Mother Teresa taught Towey to be more prayerful\, less selfish\, more humble\, less worldly\, more in love with God\, and less in love with himself. Her lessons are here for all to share. \n  \n\nThis event will take place in our newly renovated space on the ground floor! The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. A book signing and light reception will follow the lecture.

SUMMARY:Two Patients: My Conversion from Abortion to Life-Affirming Medicine
DESCRIPTION:After a terrible misjudgment in the delivery room\, Dr. John Bruchalski realized that with every pregnant woman he attends\, there are two patients—the mother and her unborn child. In addition to this discovery\, two remarkable spiritual experiences deepened his understanding of the kind of man he had become and the one he was called to be. \nTwo Patients is the story of how a physician who practiced abortion came to question the medical status quo and to pioneer an approach to reproductive medicine that respects female fertility\, honors the dignity of unborn children\, and takes care to patients regardless of their financial situation. Such health care\, writes Dr. John Bruchalski\, is merciful medicine\, and his memoir gives a glimpse of just how merciful the relationship between a doctor and his two patients—mother and child— can be. \n  \n\nThis event will take place in our newly renovated space on the ground floor! The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. A book signing and light reception will follow the lecture.

SUMMARY:To Sanctify the World: The Vital Legacy of Vatican II
DESCRIPTION:A leading Catholic intellectual explains why the teachings of the Second Vatican Council are essential to the Church’s future—and the world’s \nThe Second Vatican Council (1962–1965) was the most important Catholic event in the past five hundred years. Yet sixty years after its opening on October 11\, 1962\, its meaning remains sharply contested and its promise unfulfilled. \nIn To Sanctify the World\, George Weigel explains the necessity of Vatican II and explores the continuing relevance of its teaching in a world seeking a deeper experience of freedom than personal willfulness. The Council’s texts are also a critical resource for the Catholic Church as it lives out its original\, Christ-centered evangelical purpose. \nWritten with insight and verve\, To Sanctify the World recovers the true meaning of Vatican II as the template for a Catholicism that can propose a path toward genuine human dignity and social solidarity. \n  \n\nThis event will take place in our newly renovated space on the ground floor! SUMMARY:Last Summer Boys
DESCRIPTION:In this rapturous coming-of-age debut\, a naive-yet-determined Appalachian boy will go to any length to save his family over the course of one life-changing summer. \n“If you’re famous\, you don’t have to go to war.” \nSummer 1968. When thirteen-year-old Jack Elliot overhears the barbershop men grousing\, he devises a secret plan to keep his oldest brother\, Pete\, from the draft. If famous boys don’t go to war\, he’ll make his brother their small town’s biggest celebrity. Jack gets unexpected help when his book-smart cousin Frankie arrives in their rural Pennsylvania town for the summer. Together\, they convince Jack’s brothers to lead an expedition to find a fighter jet that crashed many winters ago―the perfect adventure to make Pete a hero. \nBut with a greedy developer determined to flood their valley\, a beautiful girl occupying his middle brother’s attentions\, a wild motorcycle gang causing trouble in town\, and a disturbed neighbor setting fires\, Jack realizes it isn’t just Pete who needs saving. \nSet during a single\, tumultuous summer\, this beautifully told tale is a heartwarming tribute to innocence\, first love\, and the unbreakable bond of brotherhood. \n  \n\nThis event will take place in our newly renovated space on the ground floor! The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. A book signing and light reception will follow the lecture.

SUMMARY:Tearing Us Apart: How Abortion Harms Everything and Solves Nothing
DESCRIPTION:The political philosopher Ryan T. Anderson\, bestselling author of When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment\, teams up with the pro-life journalist Alexandra DeSanctis to expose the catastrophic failure—social\, political\, legal\, and personal—of legalized abortion. \nSchedule:\n5:00pm-Happy Hour\n6:00pm- Lecture\n7:00pm-Event Ends\nRegistration for this event closes at 12pm on June 29th.\nTo access the roof\, please enter through the main lobby at 1501 K Street. A CIC staff member will check you in and guide you to the elevators. \nRAIN LOCATION: Catholic Information Center\, Suite 220 \n  \nWith the Supreme Court returning abortion law to the democratic process\, a powerful new book reframes the coming debate: Our fifty-year experiment with unlimited abortion has harmed everyone—even its most passionate proponents. \nWomen\, men\, families\, the law\, politics\, medicine\, the media—and\, of course\, children (born and unborn)—have all been brutalized by the culture of death fostered by Roe v. Wade. \nAbortion hollows out marriage and the family. It undermines the rule of law and corrupts our political system. It turns healers into executioners and “women’s health” into a euphemism for extermination. \nRyan T. Anderson\, a compelling and reasoned voice in our most contentious cultural debates\, and the pro-life journalist Alexandra DeSanctis expose the false promises of the abortion movement and explain why it has made everything worse. Five decades after Roe\, everyone has an opinion about abortion. But after reading Tearing Us Apart\, no one will think about it in the same way.
