SUMMARY:CIC Family Day Book Party: The Richest Leprechaun in Ireland
DESCRIPTION:The CIC invites DC-area kids and parents to a family-friendly book launch/early Saint Patrick’s Day party on Saturday\, March 2nd\, from 10:00 am-noon. \nLocal author Elise Daniel will debut her first children’s book\, The Richest Leprechaun in Ireland\, a redemptive and heartwarming tale about a greedy leprechaun and one of Ireland’s greatest missionaries that bridges the secular-sacred divide for St. Patrick’s Day. \nThe event starts with the author’s reading of The Richest Leprechaun\, followed by our Family Day St. Patrick’s Party with kid crafts\, food\, and fun. There might even be a quick Irish step dancing lesson. During the party\, parents will also have the special opportunity to buy the book and chat with the author. \nThe CIC is located at 1501 K Street\, NW. Please note that the CIC building’s garage is closed on Saturday mornings\, but street parking is available or use an app like Spothero to locate open garages. \nAbout the Book:\n\nThe Richest Leprechaun in Ireland is a playful and heartwarming tale of redemption. A greedy leprechaun named Finnius desires only one thing in life: to be the richest leprechaun in Ireland. He spends his days pick-pocketing at the village market to fill his pot of gold\, until one day\, his crooked ways catch up with him. After a surprising encounter with a praying traveler\, Finnius discovers riches of a different kind. \n \n\nThis book intends to…\n\n\nTeach children about St. Patrick’s life from his experience in captivity as a young man to his missionary work in Ireland.\nInspire the moral imagination through a fun and whimsical fairy tale that both children and parents enjoy reading together.\nAllow children to experience God’s love through St. Patrick’s witness and Finn’s character transformation.\nInspire courage through St. Patrick’s example as a great evangelist.\nNormalize Christian tradition and truth in fairy tales.\n\n\nThe CIC March 2nd event is a special opportunity to purchase this new book in-person. If you are unable to make it\, you can pre-order a copy of The Richest Leprechaun and/or support the mission of the book through Elise Daniel’s Kickstarter page. \nAbout the Speaker/Author:\nElise Daniel is an author\, entrepreneur\, and the head of publishing at Bellwether Communications where she helps thought leaders publish op-eds and books. Her and her clients’ articles have been published in Newsweek\, Forbes\, Fox News\, and National Review\, among others. She is the collaborative writer for Dr. John Bruchalski’s memoir Two Patients: My Conversion from Abortion to Life-Affirming Medicines (Ignatius Press\, 2022). \nElise is passionate about reclaiming the true meaning of her favorite holidays. \nShe lives with her husband and children in Purcellville\, Virginia.

SUMMARY:True Confessions: Voices of Faith from a Life in the Church
DESCRIPTION:Join author Francis X. Maier for the launch of his new book\, True Confessions: Voices of Faith from a Life in the Church\, with a response from George Weigel. This event will be offered both in-person and virtually through YouTube. Please register today. \nThank you to our event co-sponsors\, the Napa Institute and the Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC). \nThe program’s schedule: \n\n5:15 pm EST: Mass\n6:00 pm EST: Talk (this portion will be offered virtually via the livestream)\n7:00 pm EST: Book signing and reception\n8:00 pm EST: Conclusion\n\nFor those attending in-person\, True Confessions will be available for purchase in the CIC’s bookstore. \nAbout the Book:\nFrancis Maier’s new book examines the past decade where Rome has been marked with sharp\, and often unwarranted\, criticism of the Church in the United States and American Catholic life. But very few of the critics have taken the time to talk\, systematically\, with a wide range of U.S. Catholics to understand their concerns. True Confessions is unique for its frank and in-depth interviews with 103 bishops\, clergy\, religious\, and lay men and women from various backgrounds over a 17-month period\, December 2020 through May 2022. \nThe wide-ranging subject matter includes the unseen challenges of life as a bishop; the pressures and satisfactions of the priesthood\, the diaconate\, and the consecrated life; the structural and leadership ingredients of diocesan success and failure; fallout from the Church’s sex-abuse scandals; problems in Catholic universities; attitudes toward the Vatican; the role of Catholics in the academy and the secular culture; the witness of parents who have children with special needs; and the testimony of immigrant Americans as they assess their new homeland. \nFinally\, the book presents the reasons why so many U.S. Catholics\, despite today’s challenges\, continue to love the Church and cherish their faith with joy and energy.

SUMMARY:Life-Giving Wounds: A Catholic Guide to Healing for Adult Children of Divorce or Separation
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join authors Dr. Daniel and Bethany Meola for a discussion of their book and ministry of the same name\, Life-Giving Wounds. This event will be offered both in-person and virtually through YouTube. Please register today. \nEvent Schedule: \n\n10:00 am EST: Talk\n11:00 am EST: Book signing and coffee hour\n12:00 pm EST: Conclusion\n\nFor those attending in-person\, Life-Giving Wounds will be available for purchase at the CIC’s bookstore. \nPlease note that the CIC building’s garage is closed on Saturday mornings. Street parking is available or use an app like Spothero to find open garages. \nAbout the Book:\nOver half of the U.S. population will experience the splitting up of their parents\, statistics say. Yet no matter how “normal” divorce becomes\, it always inflicts a profound wound on families—not only the parents\, but the children\, whether young or grown. The children of divorce are fractured on the level of their very being: heart\, mind\, and soul. If left untended\, this break could pain them for the rest of their lives\, tingeing their relationships\, their faith\, and their capacity for joy. \nLife-Giving Wounds offers a path to recovery for adult children of divorce and separation\, and a thorough reference for those who love and care for them. Daniel and Bethany Meola draw from their personal experience\, theological formation\, and academic research—as well as from their work of accompanying hundreds of men and women from broken homes—to provide a compassionate\, spiritually rich\, and psychologically sound guidebook following the footsteps of the only true healer: Jesus Christ. \nReaders of Life-Giving Wounds learn to recognize the many ruptures caused by divorce and\, more crucially\, to find new life by grieving\, praying\, hoping\, loving\, forgiving\, trusting\, and committing to one’s vocation. In the Resurrection\, God turns suffering into something infinitely beautiful: redemption. This is where we find healing that lasts. Our wounds may remain with us—as Christ’s did with him—but they can\, like his\, begin to give life. \nAbout the Speakers:\nDr. Daniel and Bethany Meola\, Co-Founders of Life-Giving Wounds (Dan is President and Board Chairman; Bethany is Vice President and Board Secretary) \nDaniel Meola is an adult child of divorce who earned his Ph.D. in Theology of Marriage and Family from the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family in Washington\, D.C. He has been leading retreats and support groups for adult children of divorce or separation since 2015 in the Archdiocese of Washington\, and in 2018 he founded Life-Giving Wounds to spread the retreat\, support groups\, and other ministry to adult children of divorce or separation around the country. \nDan has over fifteen years of experience running retreats and giving presentations to various groups\, including for youth\, young adults\, engaged couples\, and families. \nBethany Meola has a Master of Theological Studies degree from the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family in Washington\, D.C. She and Dan met there and married in 2011. Bethany served the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops for seven years in the Secretariat of Laity\, Marriage\, Family Life and Youth. Among other tasks\, she managed the website For Your Marriage\, and researched and wrote on various topics related to marriage and family. In 2017\, Dan and Bethany welcomed their daughter Zelie-Louise through the gift of adoption\, and Bethany became a stay-at-home mom. And in 2019\, Grace joined their family\, also through adoption. \nDan and Bethany live in Bowie\, MD with their two daughters and a cat.

SUMMARY:Business Matters 2024 Watch Party
DESCRIPTION:The CIC is pleased to invite you to an Open House Watch Party of Business Matters 2024: Hope for Work and Enterprise\, the Acton Institute’s premier virtual conference on business\, ethics\, and faith on Thursday\, February 22\, 2024 (1:00-4:00 pm) — after the CIC’s daily Mass. \nWalk-ins are welcome—but please do register if you plan to attend. We will email you the link to view the conference talk\, “First Principles for Virtuous Business\,” by James Otteson of the University Of Notre Dame. Refreshments provided. \nABOUT BUSINESS MATTERS 2024: \nAmid a volatile and unstable world\, there are timeless principles that always stand true. Join top business leaders and entrepreneurs February 22 as they provide you with practical advice and moral principles to help you navigate an ever-changing business world. Discussion topics include the challenges of AI\, the future of work\, and disruptive technology. These experts will also explore how businesses can help local communities thrive. You don’t want to miss this virtual conference—you’ll leave encouraged by a message of hope for the future of enterprise and innovation. \nDon’t miss what past attendees have described as “an eye-opening event\,” “interesting\, inspiring … and formative\,” and an “excellent use of technology.” \nSCHEDULE: \nAfter the CIC’s Noon Mass (approx. 12:45PM): Open house begins in the CIC bookstore. Please check in. \n1:00 PM Panel: “AI\, Disruptive Technology\, and the Future of Work”\nBrent Orrell – American Enterprise Institute\, Mark Johnson – Michigan Software Labs\, Dan Churchwell – Acton Institute\, Mate Csak – PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC)\nThere is no question today that new technology is changing the way we think about and experience work. Speculation abounds about how the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence and other disruptive technologies will affect the workplace. Worries about machines replacing human jobs are common. Others\, however\, are optimistic about the way AI is changing how we work\, for they see AI as an important tool to promote better efficiency and productivity in the workplace. How will AI change the way work is done? How will it affect the workforce? How will it affect the economy? Join panelists for a lively discussion on the implications of AI\, Chat GPT\, and other disruptive technologies for the future of work.\n \n2:00 PM Book Talk with David Bahnsen: “Full Time: Work and the Meaning of Life”\nDavid L. Bahnsen – The Bahnsen Group\, Eric Kohn – Acton Institute\nIn this session\, David Bahnsen will be interviewed by Acton’s Director of Marketing & Communications\, Eric Kohn\, about his new book Full Time: Work and the Meaning of Life. In his book\, Bahnsen makes the case that our understanding of work and its role in our lives is deeply flawed – we are unmoored from what he calls “created purpose.” He argues that the time has come to stop tiptoeing around the issues that matter\, that separating one’s identity from what they do is demonstrably false\, and that this era of alienation is for many a direct result of a low view of work.  It is in work — effort\, service\, striving — of every kind that we discover our meaning and purpose; a significant and successful life is one rooted in full-time productivity and cultivation of God’s created world. \n2:30 PM Talk: “Case Studies of Entrepreneurship and Innovation”\nJose Quintana – Advent GX Corporation\nIn this talk\, Jose Quintana\, the founder of Advent GX\, shares important lessons on building a successful business. Jose will discuss his company’s business and technology incubator\, Innovation Underground\, while sharing practical knowledge about start-ups\, including the importance of developing a business’s core values. Finally\, Jose will explore four case studies from the Innovation Underground that highlight successful start-ups his organization has cultivated. Join us for a talk full of practical wisdom that no entrepreneur or businessperson will want to miss. \n3:00 PM Panel: Beyond Efficiency: How Business Can Help Communities and Families Flourish\nStephanie Slade – Reason Magazine\, Anne Bradley – The Fund For American Studies\, Stephen Dr Barrows – Acton Institute\, Douglas Gebhardt – F.A. Wilhelm Construction Company\nDoes business help or harm local communities? Answering this question is pivotal to addressing the current crisis of communities concentrated in certain regions of the country. Many have critiqued free markets for disruption in community life when factories close or jobs shift overseas. This panel will grapple honestly with some of the negative impacts of global trade and markets on certain groups and communities while also showing the positive role business can play in aiding families and communities hurting the most. As just one example: on a micro-level\, businesses can creatively solve problems that communities face and provide employment that sustains families. Join panelists Anne Bradley\, Doug Gebhardt\, and Stephanie Slade for an engaging and enlightening conversation about the role business plays in community flourishing. \n4:00 PM: Conclusion

SUMMARY:The Administrative Virtues
DESCRIPTION:View the session’s video archive here:\n \nThe CIC is pleased to invite you to our co-sponsored program with the Project on Constitutional Originalism and the Catholic Intellectual Tradition (CIT) of the Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law. \nThe focus of this panel discussion will be on “The Administrative Virtues\,” which is also the title of CUA Law Professor Chad Squitieri’s forthcoming law review article\, which proposes that administrative law can develop to incorporate insights from virtue ethics\, similar to how administrative law has already developed to incorporate insights from the deontological and consequentialist perspectives. A shift to virtue ethics would call for a more central focus on the actors that exercise administrative power\, rather than just the duties that might constrain those actors’ discretion (deontology) or the balancing of consequences that might flow from the actors’ proposed regulatory actions (consequentialism). \nJudge Gregory G. Katsas will serve as this session’s moderator with former Secretary of Labor Eugene Scalia and Notre Dame Law Professor Emily Bremer joining Professor Squitieri on the panel.

SUMMARY:Priest and Beggar: The Heroic Life of Venerable Aloysius Schwartz
DESCRIPTION:In 1957\, at twenty-seven years old\, Father Aloysius Schwartz of Washington\, D.C.\, asked to be sent to one of the saddest places in the world: South Korea in the wake of the Korean War. Just a few months into his priesthood\, he stepped off the train in Seoul into a dystopian film. Squatters with blank stares picked through hills of garbage. Paper-fleshed orphans lay on the streets like leftover war shrapnel. The scenes pierced him. \nWithin just fifteen years\, Father Schwartz had changed the course of Korean history\, founding and reforming orphanages\, hospitals\, hospices\, clinics\, schools\, and the Sisters of Mary\, a Korean religious order dedicated to the sickest of the sick and the poorest of the poor. All the while\, he himself—like the Sisters—lived the same hard poverty as the people he served and loved. \nBiographer Kevin Wells tells the story of a different kind of American hero\, an ordinary priest who stared down corruption\, slander\, persecution\, and death for the sake of God’s poor. “What Father Al managed to do is beyond the pale”\, said his longtime collaborator Monsignor James Golasinski. “He was the boldest man I ever knew. He feared nothing.” \nKnown for his joy and his humor\, even in the teeth of Lou Gehrig’s disease\, Schwartz was declared a Servant of God by Pope Francis in 2015. By the time of his death in 1992\, his work with the Sisters of Mary had spread to the Philippines and Mexico; and since then\, the Sisters have founded Boystowns and Girlstowns across Central and South America\, as well as in Tanzania. Father Schwartz died calling out to his beloved Mary\, the Virgin of the Poor\, saying\, “All praise\, honor\, and glory for anything good accomplished in my life goes to her and to her alone.”

SUMMARY:Persecuted From Within
DESCRIPTION:Co-sponsored with the Institute for Human Ecology. \nMany Catholics have either left the Church or been scandalized by the errors or immorality rampant in her clergy. We’ve watched aghast as faithful Catholics have been restricted or punished without just cause\, while those who confuse\, contradict\, or undermine the Faith are elevated. In this bold and urgent book\, the authors notice an apparent absurdity: those most disciplined by the Church at this time are often least deserving of correction. This protracted state of confusion and injustice\, plain for all to see\, has shaken the faith of millions. \nFar from being just another diatribe\, these absorbing pages provide a deeply illuminating historical perspective\, revealing how this chaotic period in the Church is hardly unprecedented — or unpredicted. Instead\, it represents a recurring feature of life in the Church throughout her history and is even a part of the divine plan. With this context\, you will be able to make sense of and discover solutions to our present suffering. \nYou will learn: \n\nWhen to obey — and when to disobey — a priest or bishop; how several saints were purified and sanctified by unholy superiors \nWhat not to do when responding to the crisis of persecution in the Church \nHow Christ both predicted and prefigured the sufferings of His Church at the hands of wicked prelates \nPractical ways you can respond and share the truth \nAchievable means to embolden your faith and remain obedient while correcting error \nHow to talk to non-Catholics about the pandemic of filth and error in the Church \n\nYou will see how eleven of the greatest Catholics in history — canonized saints all — suffered from undeserved persecution by their superiors and even betrayal by clergy and how this suffering was part of their sanctification\, serving as a heroic model for us today. You will contemplate the valor and wisdom of priests from the earliest days of the Church; of laypeople from St. Joan of Arc to St. Thomas More; of religious\, such as Sts. Teresa of Ávila\, John of the Cross\, and Alphonsus Liguori; and of modern-day giants\, including St. Padre Pio and Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. As you travel with these remarkable characters across twenty centuries and four continents\, you will see the wisdom of the divine plan and be encouraged to defend the Church through this present hour of darkness. \nAdditionally\, you will find thorough and orthodox explanations of doctrine concerning Church authority\, fraternal correction\, and the virtue of obedience\, as well as a practical plan to redeem our current shameful chapter in Church history. This book stands as a valuable and heartening resource for pastors\, catechists\, and those who seek to “counsel the doubtful” and “comfort the afflicted.”

SUMMARY:The Current of Desire: A Philosophy of Love in Motion
DESCRIPTION:This event is in person! \nThe popular prophets of the twenty-first century encourage a wholesale embrace of human desire. If you want it\, you ought to have it. But\, to what extent can our desires be trusted? And\, in what sense do they reveal our destiny? This lecture will consider desire according to the mind of St. Thomas Aquinas as a love in motion\, specifically a love that stands in need of healing and growth. For only with order and by discipline does one attain to the horizon of his homing. \nCo-Sponsored with The Congressional Catholic Staff Association.

SUMMARY:Glorifying Christ
DESCRIPTION:Cardinal Francis E. George\, O.M.I.\, was a model pastor and a heroic disciple of Christ. A native Chicagoan\, he was told as a young man that he would never be a priest in Chicago because of a physical disability resulting from polio. He went on to be ordained a priest with the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in 1963. He was appointed as Archbishop of Chicago in 1997\, created a cardinal in 1998\, and served in Chicago until 2014\, just months before his death at the age of 78. \nCardinal George’s many gifts — including his superior intellect — made him a pivotal player in Church affairs nationally and internationally. He governed during difficult and challenging times\, yet he always attempted to lead with the heart of Christ\, living out his episcopal motto\, “To Christ be glory in the Church.” \nA man of pastoral availability\, Cardinal George poured out his life in service to Christ and the Church\, always attentive to the poor and those on the margins. Universally admired for his pursuit and proclamation of the truth\, and his personal witness to the Gospel\, Cardinal George remains a model for discipleship and leadership. By the time of his death in 2015\, Cardinal George was regarded as one of the most respected bishops in American Catholic history. His fascinating and inspiring story reminds us that God’s ways are always better than our own.

SUMMARY:All the Kingdoms of The World
DESCRIPTION:A fresh assessment of Catholic integralism and other new and radical religious alternatives to liberal democracy. \nAccording to a common narrative\, the twentieth century spelled the end of faith-infused political movements. Their ideologies\, like Catholic integralism\, would soon be forgotten. Humans were finally learning to keep religion out of politics. \nOr were we? In the twenty-first century\, nations as diverse as Russia\, India\, Poland\, and Turkey have seen a revival of religious politics\, and many religious movements in other countries have proved similarly resilient. A new generation of political theologians passionately reformulate ancient religious doctrines to revolutionize modern political life. They insist that states recognize the true religion\, and they reject modern liberal ideals of universal religious freedom and church-state separation. \nIn this book\, philosopher Kevin Vallier explores these new doctrines\, not as lurid oddities but as though they might be true. The anti-liberal doctrine known as Catholic integralism serves as Vallier’s test case. Yet his approach naturally extends to similar ideologies within Chinese Confucianism and Sunni Islam. \nVallier treats anti-liberal thinkers with the respect that liberals seldom afford them and offers more moderate skeptics of liberalism a clear account of the alternatives. Many liberals\, by contrast\, will find these doctrines frightening and strange but of enduring interest. Vallier invites all his readers on a unique intellectual adventure\, encouraging them to explore unfamiliar ideals through the lenses of theology\, philosophy\, politics\, economics\, and history.

SUMMARY:The Shroud of Jesus: And the Sign John Ingeniously Concealed
DESCRIPTION:Gilbert R. Lavoie\, M.D.\, invites you on a fascinating adventure to examine the Shroud of Turin\, juxtaposing his scientific findings with John’s Gospel account of the death and resurrection of Jesus. This story of the life of Jesus comes alive through relatable\, real-world scientific witnesses who explore whether the image on the shroud is the work of human hands\, a natural phenomenon\, or a supernatural event. \nThere are abundant photos that allow you to decide for yourself what the image and blood marks of this cloth reveal. As you explore the mystery of this shroud through the eyes of forensics and the lens of scripture\, you will begin to discover the following\, and much more: \n\nThe reason why the shroud image isn’t mentioned in the Gospels \nSignificant studies that demonstrate why the shroud cannot be a painting \nDetails that confirm that the man of the shroud was crucified \nHow the shroud corroborates the Gospel accounts of the death\, resurrection\, and ascension of Jesus \n\nDr. Lavoie conducts his own studies to determine how blood transferred from a crucified body to cloth. He applies his experience in treating trauma patients and observing the appearance of corpses in autopsy rooms to unveil intriguing insights about the image and blood on the shroud. And he details other experts’ hands-on observations of the shroud at microscopic\, biological\, and chemical levels and shows how they attest to its authenticity. \nThis book is a visual journey that opens the door to new insights into the Gospel of John. It is only through John’s witness of the life of Jesus that we can come to a more complete appreciation of the Shroud of Jesus.

SUMMARY:The Future of Catholicism and Education in Modern Secular Ireland
DESCRIPTION:The Catholic Church and secular society at large are experiencing unprecedented social and moral transformation in Ireland and throughout the Western World.   This is creating new challenges that require innovative models for Catholic education. In the past\, Ireland’s unparalleled influence on Catholic education worldwide was supported by free government-backed Catholic schools in Ireland which succeeded the British educational system. Today declining religious adherence in Ireland\, the disappearance of Faith formation from the remaining nominally Catholic schools\, as well as declining academic standards have placed transformed Irish society and Catholic education in particular. \nIn response to these realities \, Professor Pádraig Cantillon-Murphy is leading efforts to forge new models of Catholic education in Ireland and beyond.  Recognizing the need for Catholic education independent of the secular state\, Professor Cantillon-Murphy and his wife Grace established Mater Dei Academy\, a completely original academic model for Ireland: independent and lay-run explicitly Catholic\, Cambridge International certified\, and classically inspired in pedagogy and curriculum. \nIn this presentation Professor Pádraig Cantillon-Murphy will provide an overview of classical education in the Irish context\, the historical role of Ireland in the global education ecosystem\, and address the challenges facing Catholic education and faith formation in contemporary society\, explicating the need for a reestablishment of a new academic model suitable for the third millennium.

SUMMARY:József Cardinal Mindszenty: Memoirs
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us and our co-sponsor\, the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation\, on Friday\, June 16th (3:00-5:00pm) for a presentation\, interview\, and book signing of József Cardinal Mindszenty’s Memoirs with author Daniel J. Mahoney at the Victims of Communism Museum. \nPLEASE NOTE: This event WILL NOT take place at the CIC\, but rather at the VICTIMS OF COMMUNISM MUSEUM located at 900 15TH STREET NW\, WASHINGTON\, DC. \nThe event will include a presentation by Dr. Mahoney on Cardinal Mindszenty (1892-1975)\, who was one of the anti-totalitarian titans of the twentieth century. The Hungarian Cardinal\, now named Venerable by the Catholic Church\, tenaciously defended human dignity and religious freedom against the totalitarian movements and regimes that subjugated east-central Europe during the worst years of the twentieth century. As the late Cardinal George Pell has testified\, “The memoirs of Cardinal Mindszenty are enthralling\, evidence of a terrible time\, to be set with Solzhenitsyn’s tales of the Gulag.” But like Solzhenitsyn’s work\, Mindszenty’s Memoirs also provide a witness to fidelity and hope. \nThe book includes a foreword by Joseph Pearce and an introduction by Dr. Mahoney. These moving Memoirs reveal the full story of the legendary hero-priest who has come to be regarded as a symbol of Christian and national resistance to communism. \nDr. Mahoney’s presentation will be followed by an interview\, including a Q&A period. The event will conclude with a book signing. \nPlease register to attend through the Victims of Communism registration page!

SUMMARY:Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire in Everyday Life
DESCRIPTION:Gravity affects every aspect of our physical being\, but there’s a psychological force just as powerful―yet almost nobody has heard of it. It’s responsible for bringing groups of people together and pulling them apart\, making certain goals attractive to some and not to others\, and fueling cycles of anxiety and conflict. In Wanting\, Luke Burgis draws on the work of French polymath René Girard to bring this hidden force to light and reveals how it shapes our lives and societies. \nAccording to Girard\, humans don’t desire anything independently. Human desire is mimetic―we imitate what other people want. This affects the way we choose partners\, friends\, careers\, clothes\, and vacation destinations. Mimetic desire is responsible for the formation of our very identities. It explains the enduring relevancy of Shakespeare’s plays\, why Peter Thiel decided to be the first investor in Facebook\, and why our world is growing more divided as it becomes more connected. \nWanting also shows that conflict does not arise because of our differences―it comes from our sameness. Because we learn to want what other people want\, we often end up competing for the same things. Ignoring our large similarities\, we cling to our perceived differences. \nDrawing on his experience as an entrepreneur\, teacher\, and student of classical philosophy and theology\, Burgis shares tactics that help turn blind wanting into intentional wanting–not by trying to rid ourselves of desire\, but by desiring differently. It’s possible to be more in control of the things we want\, to achieve more independence from trends and bubbles\, and to find more meaning in our work and lives. \nThe future will be shaped by our desires. Wanting shows us how to desire a better one.

DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to participate in the CIC’s first Eucharistic Procession in our nation’s capital. We’ll begin with Mass at the CIC\, where we hold the closest tabernacle to the White House. We will then bring Christ’s Real Presence onto the streets of our downtown DC neighborhood and will pass by Farragut Square\, Lafayette Square\, and McPherson Square before returning to the CIC. \n Join us as we pray especially for our country.  \nWhat is a Eucharistic Procession? \nThe Eucharist is the source and summit of the whole Christian life. A Eucharistic Procession\, therefore\, is a public witness of the veneration toward the most holy Eucharist\, conducted through public streets. It takes place in this way: A consecrated host – that is\, the real and substantial presence of Jesus Christ: body\, blood\, soul and divinity – is placed within a monstrance\, which is then lifted and carried by a priest who leads the faithful in procession \nSchedule: \n\n9:00 am: Doors open at the CIC\n9:30 am: Mass celebrated by Fr. Charles Trullols\n10:15 am: Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament; Procession begins\nAround noon: Procession concludes at the CIC\n\nFYIs: \n\n\nThe CIC building’s parking garage will be open for procession attendees for a $10 flat rate from 8:00 am-1:00pm. Access to the Atlantic Parking Garage of 1501 K Street is from the alley that connects K & L Streets\, between 15th & 16th Streets. \n\n\nThe closest DC Metro stops to the CIC are McPherson Square (Orange/Blue/Silver Lines) and Farragut North (Red Line). \n\n\nThe procession will go on rain or shine. So check the weather forecast\, and bring your umbrella or sunscreen. \n\n\nDress code: Professional Casual to Sunday Best. \n\n\nThere will be altar stations along the procession’s route. If you kneel on the ground in prayer\, you may want to bring something to cushion your knees. \n\n\nWater and snacks will not be provided. \n\n\nWe will carry your prayer intentions with us during the Procession. Submit your requests through this private online form. \n\n\nFor questions or assistance RSVP-ing\, please email us contact@cicdc.org or call 202-783-2062\, ext. 4. \n  \nIn The News:  \n\n\nOur Sunday Visitor by Kurt Jensen:“New Eucharistic procession aims to bring Christ into the U.S. capital’s public square”\nArlington Catholic Herald: “Eucharistic procession in downtown DC”\nTCA’s Conversations with Consequences podcast with Grazie Christie:  “Ep. 211 – Father Trullols and DC’s Eucharistic Procession & the Dobbs Leak One Year Later”\nCatholic Connection radio show with Teresa Tomeo (minute 34:45): “Catholic Information Center Hosting First Eucharistic Procession in Downtown Washington\, D.C.”

SUMMARY:Pilgrimage to the Museum: Man's Search for God Through Art and Time
DESCRIPTION:Co- Sponsored with Divine Mercy University \nClick Here to Learn More about Divine Mercy University \nHave you ever visited a museum and found the narrations in the self-guided-tour headsets a bit tedious? Slightly too clinical\, perhaps? And have you ever noticed that God is rarely mentioned in art museums these days\, unless in a cold\, archaeological\, “scientific” way? All of that is about to change. \nIn Pilgrimage to the Museum\, author-curator Stephen Auth takes you on a provocative and colorful journey through the history of Western art\, interpreted through a lens of profound Christian faith ― appropriately so since\, in Auth’s view\, much of Western art expresses humanity’s search for God\, the Divine Artist-Creator. \nIn this beautifully illustrated voyage\, drawn largely from works on display at New York’s popular Metropolitan Museum of Art\, you will experience the ups and downs of humanity’s determined quest. Leaving all the art-history jargon at the front door\, Auth will transport you in his spiritual time machine from Egypt’s Old Kingdom\, through Greece and Rome\, to medieval Europe; from the age of the Renaissance\, through the Ages of Exploration and Enlightenment; and from the rise of atheism in the late 1800s to the seeds of a spiritual rebirth in the modern era. Along the way\, you will experience anew the masterpieces of many artists\, from Polykleitos to Raphael\, Duccio to Rembrandt\, Monet to Picasso. \nThrough the works of these great artists\, you will encounter the profound truths that lead many to God and cause many others to wonder. You will discover how various themes and motifs of man’s struggle to find God occur\, morph\, fade\, and then reoccur centuries later. As you laugh\, cry\, and pray your way through this illuminating voyage\, you will emerge refreshed and renewed in your own journey to God― and you will never look at a work of art the same way again. \n  \n \nThe event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. \nEvent Schedule:  \n6:00-7:00pm- Lecture. \n7:00-8:00pm- Book Signing and Light Reception. \n8:00pm- Event Ends. \n
