SUMMARY:Got Religion? A Young Professionals Happy Hour with Naomi Schaefer Riley
DESCRIPTION:Got Religion?\nWhy are young people dropping out of religious institutions? Can anything be done to reverse the trend? In Got Religion?\, Naomi Schaefer Riley examines the reasons for the defection\, why we should care\, and how some communities are successfully addressing the problem. \nThe traditional markers of growing up are getting married and becoming financially independent. But young adults are delaying these milestones\, sometimes for a full decade longer than their parents and grandparents. This new phase of “emerging adulthood” is diminishing the involvement of young people in religious institutions\, sapping the strength and vitality of faith communities\, and creating a more barren religious landscape for the young adults who do eventually decide to return to it. Yet\, clearly there are some churches\, synagogues\, and mosques that are making strides in bringing young people back to religion. \nGot Religion? offers in-depth\, on-the-ground reporting about the most successful of these institutions and shows how many of the structural solutions for one religious group can be adapted to work for another. \nThe faith communities young people attach themselves to are not necessarily the biggest or the most flashy. They are not the wealthiest or the ones employing the latest technology. Rather\, they are the ones that create stability for young people\, that give them real responsibility in a community and that help them form the habits of believers that will last a lifetime. \nNaomi Schaefer Riley\nNaomi Schaefer Riley is a weekly columnist for the New York Post and a former Wall Street Journal editor. She is the author of Til Faith Do Us Part: How Interfaith Marriage Is Transforming America\, God on the Quad\, and The Faculty Lounges. She lives with her husband\, Jason\, and their three children in suburban New York City. \nYoung Professionals Happy Hours are open to those between the ages of 21-35. $15 admission covers food and beverages.

SUMMARY:Collin Raye "A Voice Undefeated"
DESCRIPTION:When Collin Raye’s powerful\, golden voice dazzled the country music scene in 1991 with his Number One hit single “Love\, Me”\, country music listeners fell in love with one of the great voices of our time. A new star was rising\, and Collin’s success continued throughout the nineties with over eight million records sold. \nRaye’s autobiography\, A Voice Undefeated\, gives readers a down-to-earth account of the author’s personal and professional life. From his childhood in Arkansas and Texas through his days with the Wray Brothers Band in Oregon and Reno to his rise to international stardom\, this book is both a journey to the top of the music world and an intimate diary of a soul that has suffered great professional and personal losses. \nMany who love Collin Raye\, the successful country music artist\, don’t know much about Collin Raye\, the man\, and the many trials he has endured with faith and courage. Most recently his beloved nine-year-old granddaughter\, Haley\, died in 2010 from an undiagnosed neurological disease. Since Haley’s death\, Collin has become an advocate for the sick and disabled and has established the Haley Bell Blesséd Chair Foundation to provide wheelchairs to families with special needs children. \nThis is a remarkable\, inspirational story told by the man who lived it. It is a story of faith\, of struggle\, of suffering\, of profound love\, and ultimately of triumph in the midst of tragedy. \n \nCollin Raye\nCollin Raye is one of America’s best-loved country singers. He produced twenty-four Top Ten singles\, of which sixteen were Number One hits\, and a total of five straight platinum and two gold albums\, which is a record for the Epic label to this day. He is an advocate for sick and disabled persons and continues to perform live throughout the country. \n*$15 Admission at the door includes food and drinks. As a CIC Young Professional Program Happy Hour\, this event is open to those between the ages of 21-35.

SUMMARY:Business Secrets of the Trappist Monks
DESCRIPTION:One CEO’s Quest for Meaning and Authenticity\nA CIC Young Professionals Happy Hour Event with author\, August Turak*\n “This book is both quietly provocative and groundbreaking. With great simplicity\, August Turak unlocks these monastic ‘secrets’ that go to the core of succeeding in an economic era in which authenticity and passion have become key. Who knew the monks had so many things right?”   —Tom Freston\, former CEO of Viacom and MTV Networks \n\nAugust Turak is a successful entrepreneur\, corporate executive\, and award-winning author who attributes much of his success to living and working alongside the Trappist monks of Mepkin Abbey for seventeen years. As a frequent monastic guest\, he learned firsthand from the monks as they grew an incredibly successful portfolio of businesses. \nService and selflessness are at the heart of the 1\,500-year-old monastic tradition’s remarkable business success. It is an ancient though immensely relevant economic model that preserves what is positive and productive about capitalism while transcending its ethical limitations and internal contradictions. Combining vivid case studies from his thirty-year business career with intimate portraits of the monks at work\, Turak shows how Trappist principles can be successfully applied to a variety of secular business settings and to our personal lives as well. He demonstrates that monks and people like Warren Buffett are wildly successful not despite their high principles but because of them. Turak also introduces other “transformational organizations” that share the crucial monastic business strategies so critical for success. \nAfter a corporate career with companies like MTV\, August Turak founded two highly successful software businesses\, Raleigh Group International (RGI) and Elsinore Technologies. He received a B.A. in history from the University of Pittsburgh and is pursuing a Masters in theology at St. John’s University\, Minnesota. Turak’s essay “Brother John” received the grand prize in the John Templeton Foundation’s Power of Purpose essay contest. He has been featured in the Wall Street Journal\, Fast Company\, Selling Magazine\, the New York Times\, and Business Week\, and is a popular leadership contributor at Forbes.com. His website is www.augustturak.com. \n\nReviews: \n\n“Business Secrets of the Trappist Monks is an eye-opening read. August Turak delivers a timely\, insightful message about the power of purpose and the surprising ways that service can fuel success. The engaging narrative—which is grounded in Turak’s rich\, diverse experiences as an entrepreneur\, corporate executive\, and monastic guest—paints a picture of a path to profits that is both pioneering and provocative.” —Adam Grant\, author of Give and Take: A Revolutionary Approach to Success \n“I truly believe this book will improve not only your business but your life. Read it. Apply what you learn and then\, in keeping with the very spirit of the book\, pass it on to someone else.” —Michael Keaton\, actor \n  \n*$15 Admission includes food and drinks.
