DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event has been rescheduled from November 18th to November 29th.\nAs we navigate year two of the COVID-19 pandemic\, governments continue to implement new mandates and lockdown measures. Throughout the pandemic\, defenders of these measures have often argued that they’re necessary to protect the common good of our communities. In response\, many opponents charge that the common good is used as a cover to attack individual liberty\, casting doubt on whether a notion of the common good should guide our politics at all. In light of this debate\, how do we ensure a proper understanding of the common good? And what does that look like in the era of COVID-19? \nJoin The American Conservative and the Catholic Information Center as we discuss the nature of the common good\, its place in our politics\, and how it relates to our COVID-19 response. \nThis event is hosted in-person and online. SUMMARY:The Rights of Women: Reclaiming a Lost Vision
DESCRIPTION:Have the gains achieved by modern feminists in the political and economic spheres relied on a too-narrow idea of liberty and equality at the expense of a richer understanding of the natural duties that we owe to one another? If so\, what are the costs of this\, and can the proper foundation of equal rights be reclaimed? \nErika Bachiochi will offer remarks reflecting on the themes of her new book\, The Rights of Women: Reclaiming a Lost Vision\, which offers an original look at the development of feminism in the United States and proposes a philosophical and legal framework for rights grounded in our responsibilities. \nThe event will be moderated by EPPC President Ryan T. Anderson and will include responses from Mary Eberstadt and Ashley McGuire. \nThis book is being published in the de Nicola Center’s book series with University of Notre Dame Press. \nAbout the Book\nIn The Rights of Women\, Erika Bachiochi explores the development of feminist thought in the United States. Inspired by the writings of Mary Wollstonecraft\, Bachiochi presents the intellectual history of a lost vision of women’s rights\, seamlessly weaving philosophical insight\, biographical portraits\, and constitutional law to showcase the once predominant view that our rights properly rest upon our concrete responsibilities to God\, self\, family\, and community. \nBachiochi proposes a philosophical and legal framework for rights that builds on the communitarian tradition of feminist thought as seen in the work of Elizabeth Fox-Genovese and Jean Bethke Elshtain. Drawing on the insight of prominent figures such as Sarah Grimké\, Frances Willard\, Florence Kelley\, Betty Friedan\, Pauli Murray\, Ruth Bader Ginsburg\, and Mary Ann Glendon\, this book is unique in its treatment of the moral roots of women’s rights in America and its critique of the movement’s current trajectory. The Rights of Women provides a synthesis of ancient wisdom and modern political insight that locates the family’s vital work at the very center of personal and political self-government. Bachiochi demonstrates that when rights are properly understood as a civil and political apparatus born of the natural duties we owe to one another\, they make more visible our personal responsibilities and more viable our common life together. \nThis smart and sophisticated application of Wollstonecraft’s thought will serve as a guide for how we might better value the culturally essential work of the home and thereby promote authentic personal and political freedom. The Rights of Women will interest students and scholars of political theory\, gender and women’s studies\, constitutional law\, and all readers interested in women’s rights.

DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be truly free? Is it merely a matter of exercising our rights and resisting coercion? Or is it something more? This four-part series aims to illumine the freedom Christ promises in the life of grace\, and to discern how this be lived out in today’s world. \nPart Two-Freedom and Principles of Catholic Social Thought\nThis talk first sketches a “Catholic constitution of liberty” drawing on the paradoxical assertion in Centesimus Annus §41 that liberty is predicated on a dependent\, obedient posture that is proper to rational creatures. I argue that the principles of a free society\, antecedently cherished by classical liberals\, with some variation\, can be derived from this liberty of dependence. This lecture secondly develops a thesis about the possibility of a natural alliance between Catholic thought and classical liberalism\, especially in regard to contemporary threats to the common good rooted in both collectivist and individualist attacks on the family and constituting a new formulation of the social question. \nThis event is free\, open to the public\, and will be followed by a reception with light refreshments.

DESCRIPTION:Kathleen Beckman asked eleven women to write about their experiences with the power of prayer “to strengthen an army of praying women united for the many spiritual and temporal needs of the human family.” None of us have any doubt these days that the need is great — and in our beloved Church too\, as so many of us are shaken by the scandalous news of this summer. Kathryn Jean Lopez\, one of the eleven chapter authors\, discusses the urgency for women to “save the peace of the world\,” as recent popes have put it\, in loving\, fervent\, prayerful intercession. \nKathleen and Kathryn will discuss practical ways to become “contemplatives in action” for “such a time as this” (Esther 4:14). \nKathleen Beckman is co-founder of the Foundation of Prayer for Priests and author of When Women Pray and Praying for Priests (a second edition of which is being released this Fall). Kathryn Jean Lopez is senior fellow at the National Review Institute where she directs the Center for Religion\, Culture\, and Civil Society and editor-at-large of National Review.

DESCRIPTION:Description:\nJoin us as we gather to edit articles on parishes in the Archdiocese of Washington in honor of the Feast of St. Jerome\, patron saint of translators\, librarians\, and encyclopedists. There is a rich institutional history of the Catholic Church here in the Archdiocese dating all the way back to John Carroll\, the first Bishop and Archbishop in the United States. Our goal is to make that history known on the world’s largest online encyclopedia. \nAttendees will learn to edit Wikipedia and use online and print sources to update related Wikipedia articles. Experienced Wikipedians will be on hand to provide training and guidance. There will also be some librarians available to help with research. \nLaptops are required; please bring your own. Wikimedia has two laptops to loan. Reserve one by emailing info@wikimediadc.org. New editors are strongly encouraged to create a Wikipedia account before the day of the event. Do so by clicking here. DESCRIPTION:Has liberalism failed because it has succeeded? \nOf the three dominant ideologies of the twentieth century—fascism\, communism\, and liberalism—only the last remains. This has created a peculiar situation in which liberalism’s proponents tend to forget that it is an ideology and not the natural end-state of human political evolution. As Patrick Deneen argues in this provocative book\, liberalism is built on a foundation of contradictions: it trumpets equal rights while fostering incomparable material inequality; its legitimacy rests on consent\, yet it discourages civic commitments in favor of privatism; and in its pursuit of individual autonomy\, it has given rise to the most far-reaching\, comprehensive state system in human history. DESCRIPTION:The Drama of Grace\nSigrid Undset and the Narrative of Conversion\nwith Fr. Raymund Snyder\, OP\nSigrid Undset is best known for her novel Kristin Lavransdatter\, which earned her the Nobel Prize in 1928. Although she is acclaimed for the historical and psychological realism of this portrait of a 14th Norwegian woman\, her novels also contain a deeper layer of richness that can only properly be appreciated through a theological lens. In this lecture\, Fr. Snyder will present some of Undset’s stories of conversion in light of St. Thomas Aquinas’s doctrine of grace. Undset’s writings illustrate to modern readers the beauty of a heart transformed by the God who is ever ancient and ever new.
