SUMMARY:Tyrannizing the Common Good: Uses and Abuses in an Age of Disintegration
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event has been rescheduled from November 18th to November 29th.\nAs we navigate year two of the COVID-19 pandemic\, governments continue to implement new mandates and lockdown measures. Throughout the pandemic\, defenders of these measures have often argued that they’re necessary to protect the common good of our communities. In response\, many opponents charge that the common good is used as a cover to attack individual liberty\, casting doubt on whether a notion of the common good should guide our politics at all. In light of this debate\, how do we ensure a proper understanding of the common good? And what does that look like in the era of COVID-19? \nJoin The American Conservative and the Catholic Information Center as we discuss the nature of the common good\, its place in our politics\, and how it relates to our COVID-19 response. \nThis event is hosted in-person and online. A light reception will follow the discussion. Registration is required.

SUMMARY:"The Exorcist" at 50: The True Story
DESCRIPTION:This year marks the 50th anniversary of the New York Times best-selling novel The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty. The novel and subsequent movie sparked a cultural sensation that is still relevant five decades later. Join our panel as they explore the true story that inspired it\, discuss the legacy of the novel and film\, and provide a unique glimpse into the world of angels and demons. \nThis event is hosted in-person and online for free and open to the public. A light reception will follow the event. Registration is required. \n\nAbout The Exorcist:\nThe Exorcist is a 1971 horror novel by American writer William Peter Blatty. The book details the demonic possession of eleven-year-old Regan MacNeil\, the daughter of a famous actress\, and the two priests who attempt to exorcise the demon. Published by Harper & Row\, the novel was the basis of a highly successful film adaptation released two years later\, whose screenplay was also written and produced by Blatty\, and part of The Exorcist franchise. \nThe novel was inspired by a 1949 case of demonic possession and exorcism that Blatty heard about while he was a student in the class of 1950 at Georgetown University.[1] As a result\, the novel takes place in Washington\, D.C.\, near the campus of Georgetown University. In September 2011\, the novel was reprinted by Harper Collins to celebrate its fortieth anniversary\, with slight revisions made by Blatty as well as interior title artwork by Jeremy Caniglia.

SUMMARY:The Rights of Women: Reclaiming a Lost Vision
DESCRIPTION:Have the gains achieved by modern feminists in the political and economic spheres relied on a too-narrow idea of liberty and equality at the expense of a richer understanding of the natural duties that we owe to one another? If so\, what are the costs of this\, and can the proper foundation of equal rights be reclaimed? \nErika Bachiochi will offer remarks reflecting on the themes of her new book\, The Rights of Women: Reclaiming a Lost Vision\, which offers an original look at the development of feminism in the United States and proposes a philosophical and legal framework for rights grounded in our responsibilities. \nThe event will be moderated by EPPC President Ryan T. Anderson and will include responses from Mary Eberstadt and Ashley McGuire. \nThis book is being published in the de Nicola Center’s book series with University of Notre Dame Press. \nAbout the Book\nIn The Rights of Women\, Erika Bachiochi explores the development of feminist thought in the United States. Inspired by the writings of Mary Wollstonecraft\, Bachiochi presents the intellectual history of a lost vision of women’s rights\, seamlessly weaving philosophical insight\, biographical portraits\, and constitutional law to showcase the once predominant view that our rights properly rest upon our concrete responsibilities to God\, self\, family\, and community. \nBachiochi proposes a philosophical and legal framework for rights that builds on the communitarian tradition of feminist thought as seen in the work of Elizabeth Fox-Genovese and Jean Bethke Elshtain. Drawing on the insight of prominent figures such as Sarah Grimké\, Frances Willard\, Florence Kelley\, Betty Friedan\, Pauli Murray\, Ruth Bader Ginsburg\, and Mary Ann Glendon\, this book is unique in its treatment of the moral roots of women’s rights in America and its critique of the movement’s current trajectory. The Rights of Women provides a synthesis of ancient wisdom and modern political insight that locates the family’s vital work at the very center of personal and political self-government. Bachiochi demonstrates that when rights are properly understood as a civil and political apparatus born of the natural duties we owe to one another\, they make more visible our personal responsibilities and more viable our common life together. \nThis smart and sophisticated application of Wollstonecraft’s thought will serve as a guide for how we might better value the culturally essential work of the home and thereby promote authentic personal and political freedom. The Rights of Women will interest students and scholars of political theory\, gender and women’s studies\, constitutional law\, and all readers interested in women’s rights.

SUMMARY:Gender Ideology and The Equality Act: How to Respond with Courage\, Truth\, and Love
DESCRIPTION:The Equality Act\, which has now passed through the U.S. House of Representatives and awaits a vote in the U.S. Senate\, threatens to fundamentally transform American anti-discrimination laws while providing little by way of religious exemption. As “trans-rights” language continues to sweep through corporations\, media\, and schools\, Catholics have been left scrambling for resources on how to respond with truth and love. We are delighted to host John McCormack\, Washington correspondent and fellow at National Review Institute\, and Mary Hasson\, Kate O’Beirne Fellow in Catholic Studies at the Ethics and Public Policy Center\, for a virtual discussion on the political implications of the Equality Act and to highlight the Person & Identity Project\, a new web resource to help parents\, clergy\, and parochial school teachers and administrators present the truth of the human person with courage and compassion. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. Please submit questions in advance to Rosemary at rosemary.eldridge@cicdc.org. \n

SUMMARY:Reframing End-of-life Care During COVID
DESCRIPTION:We Need a Revolution of Love in End-of-Life Care \nOver the last 10 months\, we have seen so much death. And we’ve seen the heightened dangers elderly Americans face during the Coronavirus pandemic. Their vulnerabilities are made worse by ideologies that would cast them aside as inconvenient – even while we have made sacrifices to protect life\, at the same time we have seen what Pope Francis calls our throwaway society on display. Government orders even suggest someone might have thought seniors in nursing homes were necessary casualties of the pandemic. We must do better. And while we hail frontlines workers who have made tremendous sacrifices\, we have a responsibility to do our best to reverence their lives until the natural end – as with all lives. \nSr. Constance Veit\, LSP\, is a Little Sister of the Poor. The Little Sisters welcome the elderly poor into their homes with loving care\, seeing each one as Christ Himself. \nCharles Camosy has been a foremost watchdog in advocating for the elderly. Associate professor of theological and social ethics at Fordham University\, Camosy is author of Resisting Throwaway Culture: How a Consistent Life Ethic Can Unite a Fractured People. \nThis event is moderated by Kathryn Jean Lopez.

SUMMARY:Resolved: UBI Meets the Catholic Demand for a Just Wage
DESCRIPTION:One of the great advantages of Catholic social teaching is that it is normally stated in general terms of values\, principles and goals\, not specific programs. It is the reason that Catholic social teaching doesn’t fit into either political party’s platform and why Catholics of good standing in the Church can exercise prudential judgement and come to different conclusions.  \nAs Catholics we are called to honor the human dignity of each person we encounter and encouraged to approach conversations with civility\, clarity\, and compassion. In this spirit\, we invite you to join us as Dr. Ward and Dr. Pakaluk debate whether a universal basic income (UBI) aligns with Catholic social teaching’s call for a just wage. \nDr. Ward will defend the resolution and Dr. Pakaluk will oppose the resolution. IHE Executive Director Joseph Capizzi will moderate this Oxford-style debate. \nSources for Affirmative:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://uscatholic.org/articles/202004/does-catholic-social-teaching-support-a-universal-basic-income/\n\nhttps://berkleycenter.georgetown.edu/responses/for-catholic-social-thought-basic-income-gets-work-wealth-and-family-right\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSources for Negative:\n\n\n\n\nWyscinski\, Stepan Cardinal. 1995. All You Who Labor: Work and the Sanctification of Daily Life. SUMMARY:Foster Care: An Essential Call
DESCRIPTION:Foster care is at the heart of Christian life\, and yet it can often be at the peripheries of our public conversations and even parish life. At a time when the need for foster parents is on the increase\, as so many anxieties and addictions rise to the service in this pandemic\, how can we get more involved? How can we support those who need support? How can we make sure children are in safe and stable homes? And why is a Supreme Court case in the fall critical to this all? \nOur speakers will be Melissa Buck\, a foster and adoptive mother whose court case was argued by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty\, Andrea Picciotti-Bayer\, legal advisor & senior fellow at the Catholic Association (who has written an amicus brief on the Philadelphia adoption case before the Supreme Court)\, and Sarah Zagorski\, former foster child and activist. \nOur conversation is moderated by Kathryn Jean Lopez\, senior fellow at the National Review Institute and editor-at-large at National Review.

SUMMARY:Beauty Incarnated: How Sacred Art Uplifts the Soul
DESCRIPTION:Together a panel of artists explore and explain how sacred art has a desire to re-present beauty in the sacred\, and ultimately uplift the soul with prayer.  \nGiorgio Fozzati and Fernando Cidoncha discuss the mission of the artists of Sacred Art School Firenze. They will highlight how at the heart of their profession is the contemplation of the Mystery. \nAndrew de Sa explores sacred art and the Incarnation. He will specifically focus on the claim made by Pope Benedict XVI in Spirit of the Liturgy:   \n“The complete absence of images is incompatible with faith in the Incarnation of God. God has acted in history and entered into our ´sensible´ world\, so that it may become transparent to him. Images of beauty\, in which the mystery of the invisible God becomes visible\, are an ´essential´ part of Christian worship”.

SUMMARY:What is Christian in Christianity?
DESCRIPTION:How can faith be relevant in today’s culture to anyone; young or old\, Christian or otherwise? By examining this question across a wide spectrum of the aspects of life: the arts\, education\, parish life\, and politics\, Monsignor Lorenzo Albacete served as a witness for how Christians can engage with the world fully without losing sight of what is Christian in Christianity. \nOn the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the Monsignor’s passing\, the Albacete Forum and the Catholic Information Center invites the public for a discussion with Kathryn Lopez\, Fr. Lee Fangmeyer\, and Helen Whitney on what his writings and perspectives offer to our engagement with the current cultural\, social\, and religious dialogues we face daily.

SUMMARY:Life\, Religious Liberty\, and the Survival of Catholic Health Care
DESCRIPTION:The protection of the unborn\, religious freedom and the survival of Catholic health care will be largely determined by the outcome of the ongoing national debate on the American health care system.  Certain legislative proposals would place the government at the center of healthcare instead of the patient (and their relationship with God) thereby significantly reducing patient freedom and control in their own healthcare.  How does Church teaching inform Catholics and people of goodwill to evaluate these policies?  What can I do to defend religious freedom and protect Catholic healthcare?  The Christ Medicus Foundation and the Catholic Information Center invite you to join this amazing evening that will include a panel discussion moderated by EWTN’s Catherine Hadro and a wine reception to follow.

SUMMARY:Strangers in a Strange Land: Living the Catholic Faith in a Post-Christian World
DESCRIPTION:Archbishop Charles J. Chaput gives a bold critique of today’s America in his new book\, “Strangers in a Strange Land: Living the Catholic Faith in a Post-Christian World. Alongside a panel\, the Archbishop will provide a provocative look at the post-Christian public square and the gradual erosion of the religious faith and freedom that have marked it for so long. \nAt the same time\, Archbishop Charles J. Chaput will offer prophetic\, empowering guidance on how Christians—and especially Catholics—can successfully overcome these challenges and not merely survive but reclaim the joy\, the beauty\, and the grandeur of life in the world. \n\nReviews\n“At a time when many American Christians feel like ‘Strangers in a Strange Land\,’ one of the country’s most courageous and respected prelates has given us much needed words of wisdom for the challenges ahead. This forward-looking guidebook should be on every Catholic’s bookshelf.”—MARY ANN GLENDON\, Former U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See and Learned Hand Professor of Law at Harvard University \n“Archbishop Charles Chaput is the intellectual successor to Francis Cardinal George within the college of American bishops\, and his latest book — smart\, incisive\, crisply-written\, witty\, and inspiring — shows why. I would warmly recommend this text to anyone interested in the play between faith and culture.”—MOST REVEREND ROBERT BARRON\, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith \n“Pivotal and insightful\, unsettling but hopeful\, this book captures many of the challenges of following Jesus Christ at a time when his way\, truth and life are obscured or deemed unattractive by modern forces. Like a physician who understands not only the pandemic but its cure\, Chaput offers concrete ways Christians can heal and be healed by loving Christ and being a witness of his love in a troubled world.”—CARL A. ANDERSON\, Supreme Knight\, Knights of Columbus and author of A Civilization of Love \n“Archbishop Chaput’s compelling book makes clear that the struggle for Church freedom is not just about our legal rights\, but is ‘a much greater effort to defend the truth of the human being\, and to speak the truth about what our present sexual and social revolution portends.’ He offers both a clear diagnosis of our country’s challenges and a powerful inspiration for Catholics to follow the path to the City of God.”—WILLIAM MUMMA\, President of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty \n
