This four-part series aims to illumine the freedom Christ promises in the life of grace\, and to discern how this be lived out in today’s world. \nPart Two-Freedom and Principles of Catholic Social Thought\nThis talk first sketches a “Catholic constitution of liberty” drawing on the paradoxical assertion in Centesimus Annus §41 that liberty is predicated on a dependent\, obedient posture that is proper to rational creatures. I argue that the principles of a free society\, antecedently cherished by classical liberals\, with some variation\, can be derived from this liberty of dependence. This lecture secondly develops a thesis about the possibility of a natural alliance between Catholic thought and classical liberalism\, especially in regard to contemporary threats to the common good rooted in both collectivist and individualist attacks on the family and constituting a new formulation of the social question. \nThis event is free\, open to the public\, and will be followed by a reception with light refreshments.

SUMMARY:Science and Religion: The Myth of Conflict
DESCRIPTION:Stephen Barr\, President of The Society of Catholic Scientists\, discusses the unique relationship between faith and science and highlights how his organization combats this myth. \n\nThe Society of Catholic Scientists is an international lay organization founded in June of 2016 to foster fellowship among Catholic scientists and to witness to the harmony of faith and  reason. \nThe Society hopes to answer the call of Pope St. John Paul II that ‘members of the Church who are active scientists’ be of service to those who are attempting to ‘integrate the worlds of science and religion in their own intellectual and spiritual lives.’ The Society will do this through annual conferences\, symposia and seminars\, discussion groups\, lectures\, and other activities. \nIn its first year\, the SCS grew to 500 members. Nearly a hundred scientists attended its inaugural conference in April\, 2017\, along with theologians\, philosophers\, and historians. \nThe Society also provides opportunities for Catholic undergraduates\, graduate students\, and postdoctoral researchers in the natural sciences to get to know and interact with more senior colleagues. In this way the Society hopes to provide role models and mentors for young Catholics who are on the way to possible careers in science. \nTheir core mission is: \n\nTo foster fellowship among Catholic scientists.\nTo witness to the harmony between the vocation of scientist and the life of faith.\nTo be a forum for reflection upon and discussion of questions concerning the relation of science and the Catholic faith.\nTo act as a resource for Catholic educators\, pastors\, and lay people\, and for journalists and members of the general public who have questions about the significance of scientific theories and discoveries and about the relation of science and faith.

SUMMARY:Finding God in the Modern World (Part 3)
DESCRIPTION:The Drama of Grace\nSigrid Undset and the Narrative of Conversion\nwith Fr. Raymund Snyder\, OP\nSigrid Undset is best known for her novel Kristin Lavransdatter\, which earned her the Nobel Prize in 1928. Although she is acclaimed for the historical and psychological realism of this portrait of a 14th Norwegian woman\, her novels also contain a deeper layer of richness that can only properly be appreciated through a theological lens. In this lecture\, Fr. Snyder will present some of Undset’s stories of conversion in light of St. Thomas Aquinas’s doctrine of grace. Undset’s writings illustrate to modern readers the beauty of a heart transformed by the God who is ever ancient and ever new.
