SUMMARY:Death\, Judgment\, Heaven\, and Hell: Sayings of the Fathers of the Church
DESCRIPTION:Nothing has the power to inspire\, or terrify us like the unknown. Life after death is the perhaps the greatest unknown that confronts mankind. But the wisdom of the Church\, especially in the teachings of the Church Fathers\, reminds us that we know a great deal about what awaits us at the end of life. \nWhat the Church knows about the four last things―death judgment\, heaven\, and hell―is essential for helping on the way of the pilgrimage of life. The teachings of the Fathers\, far from sating our curiosity\, serve to increase the power of heaven to inspire us\, and of hell to terrify. \nIn this volume\, canon lawyer and writer Edward Condon compiles a book full of wisdom and compelling insights. More than anything\, the Fathers warn us that our life is short\, and the reckoning for how we have lived it eternal. The urgency of the Church’s message\, brought to life in the sayings of the Fathers\, comes to remind us of our true calling and inheritance in baptism\, and of the richness of the heavenly reward\, which is not so much the fruit of our efforts on Earth but the fulfillment of God’s promise of love to us. The terror of hell is not the threat of the dictator\, but a dire warning of the true scope of our freedom as children of God. \nThis book\, rich with the traditional teachings of the church\, will guide and inspire readers as they continue their life journeys\, which have a beginning but no end.

SUMMARY:Sunday Will Never Be the Same: A Rock & Roll Journalist Opens Her Ears to God
DESCRIPTION:Love and beauty. From when she was a little girl\, Dawn Eden Goldstein knew she wanted those things that in them\, somehow\, she would find God. But her life s search led her away from the temples of her childhood Judaism to the music clubs of Greenwich Village\, where she became an acolyte of a new religion: rock & roll. Over the years she earned renown as a rock critic and historian\, moving among some of popular music’s biggest names\, all the while straining to capture that transcendent love and beauty in their every note and lyric. \n\nYet her longing only deepened; the hole in her heart only grew. God s voice was calling her\, but first\, she needed ears to hear.\n\n\n\nIn Sunday Will Never Be the Same\, Goldstein (The Thrill of the Chaste) recounts her spiritual journey in beautifully wrought detail\, mixing powerful accounts of trauma\, healing\, and epiphany with funny and poignant anecdotes from inside the music scene. It is the rare conversion story that delights as it inspires\, amuses as it edifies and ultimately lays before the reader a lived testimony to the transforming grace of Christ.

SUMMARY:Alienated America
DESCRIPTION:Respected conservative journalist and commentator Timothy P. Carney continues the conversation begun with Hillbilly Elegy and the classic Bowling Alone in this hard-hitting analysis that identifies the true factor behind the decline of the American dream: it is not purely the result of economics as the left claims\, but the collapse of the institutions that made us successful\, including marriage\, church\, and civic life. \nDuring the 2016 presidential campaign\, Donald J. Trump proclaimed\, “the American dream is dead\,” and this message resonated across the country. \nWhy do so many people believe that the American dream is no longer within reach? Growing inequality\, stubborn pockets of immobility\, rising rates of deadly addiction\, the increasing and troubling fact that where you start determines where you end up\, heightening political strife—these are the disturbing realities threatening ordinary American lives today. \nThe standard accounts pointed to economic problems among the working class\, but the root was a cultural collapse: While the educated and wealthy elites still enjoy strong communities\, most blue-collar Americans lack strong communities and institutions that bind them to their neighbors. And outside of the elites\, the central American institution has been religion \nThat is\, it’s not the factory closings that have torn us apart; it’s the church closings. The dissolution of our most cherished institutions—nuclear families\, places of worship\, civic organizations—has not only divided us\, but eroded our sense of worth\, belief in opportunity\, and connection to one another. \nIn Alienated America\, Carney visits all corners of America\, from the dim country bars of Southwestern Pennsylvania.\, to the bustling Mormon wards of Salt Lake City\, and explains the most important data and research to demonstrate how the social connection is the great divide in America. He shows that Trump’s surprising victory was the most visible symptom of this deep-seated problem. In addition to his detailed exploration of how a range of societal changes have\, in tandem\, damaged us\, Carney provides a framework that will lead us back out of a lonely\, modern wilderness.

SUMMARY:Building the Benedict Option
DESCRIPTION:Building the Benedict Option is a combination spiritual memoir and practical handbook for Christians who want to build communities of prayer\, socialization\, and evangelization in the places where they live and work. \nBeginning when the author was a new convert\, she desired more communal prayer and fellowship than weekly Mass could provide. She surveyed her friends–busy\, young\, urban professionals like herself–and created enriching or supportive experiences that matched their desires and schedules. The result was a less lonely and more boisterous spiritual and social life. \nNo Catholic Martha Stewart\, Libresco is frank about how she plans events that allow her to feed thirty people on a Friday night without feeling exhausted. She is honest about the obstacles to prayer and the challenge to make it inviting and unobtrusive. Above all\, she communicates the joy she has experienced since discovering ways to open her home (even when it was only a small studio apartment). \nThe reader will close this book with four or five ideas for events to try over the next few weeks\, along with the tools to make them fruitful. From film nights to picnics in the park to resume-writing evenings\, there are plenty of ideas to choose from and loads of encouragement to make more room in one’s life for others.

SUMMARY:A Catechism for Family Life: Insights from Catholic Teaching on Love\, Marriage\, Sex\, and Parenting
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of A Catechism for Family Life: Insights from Church Teaching on Love\, Marriage\, Sex\, and Parenting is to present the teachings of the Catholic Church as they relate to specific questions in marriage and family life. Many Catholics are under-catechized and have trouble both understanding and articulating Church teaching on sexuality and marriage to an increasingly challenging culture. Pope Francis\, along with the fathers of the two recent Synods on the Family\, have called for better formation for those who work in the area of marriage and family life (see Amoris Laetitia\, 202). \nTo address this need\, we gathered pertinent questions facing men\, women\, and pastoral workers in marriage and family life. We then found passages relevant to these questions by researching Church documents on marriage and family from the past one hundred years. These include papal encyclicals\, apostolic exhortations\, and addresses\, Vatican II documents\, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. \nMainstream media coverage of Church events and Church teaching leads many to misunderstand Catholic positions on marriage and family life. While the Catholic Church has developed a rich\, detailed\, and positive teaching on marriage\, family\, and sexuality\, many Catholics do not have access to this teaching\, buried as it is in lengthy Church documents which many find intimidating. Finding the relevant teaching to address specific questions is not always a simple task\, either. This book’s main contribution is to present Church teaching relevant to marriage and family in one volume clearly organized by topic and question. \nBook available for purchase at the CIC.

SUMMARY:Why Liberalism Failed
DESCRIPTION:Has liberalism failed because it has succeeded? \nOf the three dominant ideologies of the twentieth century—fascism\, communism\, and liberalism—only the last remains. This has created a peculiar situation in which liberalism’s proponents tend to forget that it is an ideology and not the natural end-state of human political evolution. As Patrick Deneen argues in this provocative book\, liberalism is built on a foundation of contradictions: it trumpets equal rights while fostering incomparable material inequality; its legitimacy rests on consent\, yet it discourages civic commitments in favor of privatism; and in its pursuit of individual autonomy\, it has given rise to the most far-reaching\, comprehensive state system in human history. Here\, Deneen offers an astringent warning that the centripetal forces now at work on our political culture are not superficial flaws but inherent features of a system whose success is generating its own failure.

SUMMARY:Just Right: A Life in Pursuit of Liberty
DESCRIPTION:Lee Edwards is the preeminent historian of the conservative movement. But as this riveting memoir makes clear\, he has not simply observed conservatism as a detached scholar; he has been active on the national stage longer than any other conservative in America. \nSince committing his life to pro-freedom and anticommunist efforts as a young man in 1956\, he has been present at nearly every major event of the modern conservative movement. In his tireless pursuit of liberty\, Dr. Edwards has combined politics\, policy\, and philosophy. \nHis memoir is full of colorful stories from a man who has done it all in a remarkable\, multifaceted career and appears at a critical time in the history of American conservatism. In an inspiring final chapter aimed at the rising generation\, Dr. Edwards shows how conservatives can remain a major political and philosophical force in America.
